POPE FRANCIS APPEALS TO THE WHOLE CHURCH

TO RAISE UP ONE VOICE OF CEASELESS PRAYER,

IMPLORING THE HOLY SPIRIT TO SEND THE GIFT OF PEACE TO IRAQ

ARCHBISHOP CHAPUT INVITES THE CLERGY AND FAITHFUL

OF THE ARCHDIOCESE TO HEED THIS APPEAL OF THE HOLY FATHER

AND JOIN TOGETHER IN PRAYER FOR IRAQ

The Holy Father has repeated with great urgency the pressing need for all members of the Church throughout

the world to unite in prayer for an immediate end to the violence and destruction, especially directed at

defenseless Christians, in Iraq. Pope Francis with the same urgency calls the international community to protect

those who have suffered from such horrific violence and to guarantee assistance for survival.

Archbishop Chaput asks that the following intention be part of the Universal Prayer, especially this Sunday,

August 17, 2014:

For an immediate end to the violence and destruction of life in Iraq,

especially as it is directed to the native Christians,

that these evils will be defeated by efforts for peace and justice.

Let us pray to the Lord/Lord, hear our prayer.

Prayerful remembrance of the devastating plight of Christians in Iraq should be encouraged at this time

whenever Catholics gather for the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy and for devotional prayer, especially in

adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament and while praying the Holy Rosary.

This Sunday, August 17, 2014, a Holy Hour will take place at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul,

18th Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia, beginning at 5:30 PM, to pray especially for the

intention of peace in Iraq.

Mary, Queen of Peace, pray for us!

Letter from

Archbishop Chaput 2nd Collection for the Catholic University

August 23 & 24

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I appeal to you today to give generously to the National Collection for The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

Catholic University is the national university of the Catholic Church – the only institution of higher education founded by the U.S. bishops and chartered by the Vatican. The Catholic University of America educates clergy, religious, and young lay men and women from every geographical region of the United States. Here are just two ways it serves Catholic faithful throughout the United States:

• Nearly 500 Catholic parishes participate in the University’s Parish Scholarship Program, through which 1,521 undergraduates are nominated by their pastors to receive annual scholarships valued at $4.5 million; your gift helps to make our students experience at Catholic University of America.

• Through its national seminary, the University provides graduate degrees for seminarians sponsored by nearly 195 U.S. Catholic dioceses. Of our bishops and cardinals, 95 have been educated at the Catholic University of America.

Our national university is educating an important generation of lay and ordained leaders within the United States. The Collection for The Catholic University will be held in parishes of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia on the weekend of August 23 and August 24, 2014. Thank you and God bless you for support America’s Catholic university and the countless number of students who will experience an education grounded in Catholic tradition.

In today’s first reading, the Lord speaks

through the prophet Isaiah during a time of

political dissolution and moral decline. The

prophet had warned of God’s judgment against

people for the feelings of self-importance they

found in their possessions, and condemned

them for various forms of economic injustice

such as exploiting the poor and immigrants.

Good stewards know that Isaiah’s message is as

compelling today as it was in the time of the

kingdom of Judah: Do the right thing. Offer

justice and compassion toward others. Be

honest in all your dealings. And remember to

observe the day of the Lord.

The Loaves and Fishes

Project With the Loaves and Fishes Project,

giving is as easy as 1-2-3:

• Grab a can of soup, a box of pasta, or any non-perishable item from your cupboard as you dash out the door to Mass.

• Drop off your donation in the “Loaves and Fishes” closet on your right as you come into church.

• Enter the church with the warm feeling of a nourished soul!

The Loaves and Fishes team will deliver the items to the Lord’s Pantry in Downingtown.

Feel free to contribute to this “ongoing food drive” once a week, once a month, or once a year. As a church family, we can make a much appreciated contribution and a significant impact to a charity that helps over 700 families every week.

Please contact Nancy Farrington at [email protected] or 610-620-3619 for more information.
