The long hot summer is now upon us. It’s a time of rest and reflection as the SCA tends to take its break from a lot of

outdoor activities. We here in Bordermarch are planning an Arts and Science Gathering at our Baronet Keep June 16th. Lots of classes and fun will be had by all. This has become a regular biannual gathering for us to share ideas and introduce friends to the world of reenactment. We hope you will take the time to join us.

Another idea HE Santiago and I are looking at doing is a movie night. We can all meet at our home or someone else can volunteer their abode to host a movie and light snack gathering perhaps every-other month, again keeping us connected and giving the opportunity for members to introduce friends to the SCA. We can be a little intimidating in garb you know. We will speak more of this at Populace Thursday night May 31.

**Thursdays - 7 pm Fighter Practice, Bardic and general gathering in Beaumont. **Last Thursday of the Month - 7 pm, Populace & Officers Meeting.**Sundays - Until furthur notice, Sunday’s fighter practice will be held at 3pm. This will stay constant thoughout the year, as to avoid the bi-annual confusion. It also extends the time we have to play and visit.

Ink and Parchment Making Workshop

I had the distinct pleasure of putting on an ink-making and

parchment-making workshop at our “Guild Together” at the Art Studio, Inc., May 18th. Many folks were on hand to enjoy the process of learning how to make period scribal materials.

A large amount of prep work went into the processes that were covered. We were also blessed with the appearance of several mundanes, who have an interest in scribal arts. After speaking to the new arrivals we quickly came up with the information that one of the participants, M’Lord Zephyr (SCA name), has played long ago (‘96-’98) and was quite pleased to note that Bordermarch is quite alive and very well. He was joined by the very lovely M’Lady Jazmine and M’Lady Jessica along with Jazmine’s son Noah.

M’Lady Jessica found out about the classes at the last Studio art opening the night after Lady Karen and I came back from Stargate/Loch Baronials. She saw Karen and I callig’ing and illuminating a wall piece and wanted to know how.

We were also joined by Lord Thomas, Lady Jillian and Lord Jakob. Also in attendence was my beautiful

assistant/wife, who is ever so insightful. She is like Abbott to my Costello.

We started off the class by smashing oak galls and then boiling them. I had so much oak gall that I had to continue the next day for several more hours. We ended up with .5 gallons of ink when finally strained and I still have half a gallon of oak gall leftover. Between gall “stewing” and calligraphy instruction Thomas, Jakob and I enjoyed the squishy, smelly

process of parchment stretching and the “man profanities” associated with said process.

Lots of cool things were learned and accomplished, as well as lots of photos taken. My thanks to all those who were in attendance and we had a lot of fun.

Pictures on the following page include: Little M’Lord Noah and his rubber warhammer of gall-bane proceeding to show the oak apples whose boss, while his lovely mother, Jazmine, looks on in sheer joy as the young lad finally gets to hit something and not get in trouble. Lord Biau stirring a vat of goat bellies in lime water, Biau scraping the hides after the ewes “stew-ed” for two weeks, stringing the hides for the stretcher, and Lord Thomas and I stretching the hides for scraping.

I will hopefully line up another workshop for the near future. I’m thinking period pigments or white-lining.

Another Barony A&S Gathering is has been planned for Saturday,

June 16th at our home in Silsbee. Plans will be discussed at populace, May 31st.

Most gatherings are an all day affair with classes, demo’s and fighting planned under the trees. Bards usually serenade us and light finger foods are on hand through out the day. This is a way to introduce new and old friends to the SCA as well as get to know each other better. Volunteers are always needed for classes. There are no fees just fun!

Hope you can join us. We always have a great time!

There will also be plenty of room for rapier and chivalric fighter practices (we’re in the woods) and as always bardic song, stories and dance, by Lord Thomas and family.

The day will get started about 9-10 a.m. Schedule to follow.....so be watching. Finger foods to munch on always welcome. Garb optional, but always fun! No children’s activities planned unless someone wants to volunteer.

So far this is what we tentatively have for classes:

Greetings dear Populace, it is with much pride and

jubilation that I announce that we have had some of our newer fighting members kitted out to enjoy some martial training practices.

I, just a week ago, purchased a former fighter’s full kit. M’Lord Chris and his M’Lady Rebecca will be using this armor until they can build or procure their own. M’Lord Austin was able to use Lord Jakob’s and Lord Olaf’s armor on both las t thursday and sunday practices respectively.

New tough guy fighter M’Lord Justin, hailing from the Ham-Shire of Fannett, only wants to do one thing and that is hit people with rattan lumber. He also did as M’Lord Austin, fighting and borrowing the same armors. He comes with two friends, one male and one female, whose names’ escape me right now. Yet, they want to fight too.

My thanks go out to Lords’ Jakob, Olaf, Rogan, Zane, and Bran Erickr for all the help and assistance they provided to the new fighters in helping give them the taste of glorious battle.

Battle...Oh, Battle... This now segweys me into our apparent Order of

Battle. It would appear that we have a full-fledged unit on our hands. On the Shield Wall we have: Lord Biau, M’Lord Austin, Lord Jakob, M’Lord Justin of the Ham-Shire, M’Lord Chris Reynolds, M’Lord William, Lord Ulferth, and Lord Grant. Sir Simonn will either be on the shield wall or in the unit commanders spot behind the line.

On the ends we have M’Lady Rebecca on Glaive and Lord Atli on Poleaxe. Behind the wall we have Ham-Shire Justin’s friend on pole weapon and M’Lord Justin the Scribe on pole weapon. Following this up are Lady Nora and M’Lady Mary Newsome using church banned crossbow weapons. M’Lady Rebecca may alternate in ths position as well.

These are of course only predictions of Order of Battle based on observed strengths and personal interests of

all involved. Anyway you shake

your rattan sword at it though it is a right nice sight to behold or imagine. Fifteen people ready to cut a swath in the enemies

formations. It should make for a grand youtube spectacle.

Take twelve quarts of Milk warm from the Cow, turn it with a good spoonful of Runnet. Break

it well, and put it into a large strainer, in which rowl it up and down, that all the Whey may run out into a little tub; when all that will is run out, wring out more. Then break the curds well; then wring it again, and more whey will come. Thus break and wring till no more come. Then work the Curds exceedingly with your hand in a tray, till they become a short uniform Paste. Then put to it the yolks of eight new laid Eggs, and two whites, and a pound of butter. Work all this long together.

In the long working (at the several times) consisteth the making them good. Then season them to your taste with Sugar finely beaten; and put in some Cloves and Mace in subtile powder.

Then lay them thick in Coffins of fine Paste, and bake them.
