The Trumpet Newsletter of Mountainside United Methodist Church Making God’s Power Real for the East Mountains.” Issue 109 May 2013 As Revelation Becomes Real As we have been looking at the book of Revelation on Sunday mornings the past several months, there are times that it appears to me how current events are increasingly becoming a prelude of events to come that are described in this incredible book. The tragedy in Boston reminded me of Revelation 6:3-4, “When the Lamb opened the second seal…another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make men slay each other.” Our eyes have been exposed repeatedly to the two brothers who committed this horrific bombing. The result of the bombings and the efforts to catch the perpetrators resulted in the eventual shutdown of an entire city. A million people were told to stay home from work, from school and to seek shelter. Boston's subways, buses, cabs, even Amtrak service, were halted. This was a city that lost its “peace” even though it was temporary for some but lasting for others. It would be nice to think that this terrorism that is experienced in our land and around the world would fade out of existence, but we know that is not likely. Jesus and the words of Revelation warn us that things will become more difficult as we draw nearer to his return. There are at least three things I find comforting even though we live in time where the life in the modern world seems to be unraveling. The first is that Jesus has always been and will forever be King of Kings and Lord of Lords. That is unchanging regardless of how anyone in this world chooses to live. The second is that Jesus not only called us to be his disciple, but that invitation is for our life today in the world that we live in as fallen as it may appear. I have said before, we were born for this. We were born specifically for this time and season to live as a witness for Christ today. Finally, by the grace of God, Jesus has come to set up his temple in our hearts. It is Christ living in us that is our hope of glory and sharing in his glory for all eternity. God has given us "Good News" in a bad news world. For this reason we are to stand out for His glory! Issue 109 May 2013

As Revelation Becomes Real As we have been looking at the book of Revelation on Sunday mornings the past several months, there are times that it appears to me how current events are increasingly becoming a prelude of events to come that are described in this incredible book.

The second is that Jesus not only called us to be his disciple, but that invitation is for our life today in

the world that we live in as fallen as it may appear. I have said before, we were born for this. We were born

specifically for this time and season to live as a witness for Christ today. Finally, by the grace of God, Jesus has come to set up his temple in our hearts. It is Christ living in us that is our hope of glory and sharing in his glory for all eternity. God has given us "Good News" in a bad news world. For this

reason we are to stand out for His glory!

It’s graduation time! Three of our amazing youth are graduating this May and we want to take the time to congratulate all of them on a job well done. From this stepping stone the possibilities in the world are endless. We wish the best for our graduates, pray for their safety, and hope for all good opportunities to head their way. Let's continue to encourage them to do their best!

Alex Scheer is graduating from Moriarty High School with honors. She will be attending Cornell College in the fall with a major in Biology or Bio Chemistry. Alex wants to pursue a career in Neuroscience after college.

Matthew Miszkiel is graduating from Manzano High

School. He plans to go to CNM at first and intends to major in computer engineering. He loves to play his guitar. Matt is very interested in seeing what's out in the world and might change his goals along the way.

Rebecca Brink is graduating from East Mountain High school. She wants to go to New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology and major in either Biochemical or Mechanical Engineering. She's very active in volleyball and loves to read. Rebecca is excited to start this new chapter in her life.

Ryan Krout led a great work day setting up the playground. He plans on having another work day, Saturday, May 4th. Come have fun and lend a hand!

Easter Egg Hunt

The Easter Egg Hunt was wonderful this year! We had over 25 kids receive spiritual education in children's church, have a wonderful Easter lesson with the youth, and then go on to expend their

remaining energy to gather as many eggs as possible. I loved seeing all the children happy and learning!

Teens at the Nuclear Science Museum The teens went to the Nuclear Science Museum on April 20th. They got to see a new display on loan from the Smithsonian about satellites and how they help us see the different changes or trends on the earth. The teens got to see old artifacts surrounding the dawn of the atomic age from antique guns to ice skates from that time period. We learned about the history leading up to the first atomic bomb and even more importantly, the aftermath of the atomic bomb and the war itself. They got to see huge fighter planes up close and even got to try some science experiments themselves! Afterwards we had a fantastic lunch hosted by Jason Anders. Thank you everyone that participated and made it such a wonderful day!

Youth Day at the Aquarium/Bio Park Saturday, May 25, at 9 AM. We'll meet in the Church parking lot for carpooling at 8:30 AM. Bring your walking shoes, sunscreen, and a lot of excitement because it's going to be fun! Learn all about the aquatic creatures at the aquarium, watch a short film, and touch sting rays. Then we'll get to explore the Bio Park and grab a good lunch! This will be an awesome event! Please tell every teen you know and I encourage all the parents to let their kids participate in this event. Please call Callie Black at 281-5117 if you have any questions.

McCurdy Mission Trip It will be at McCurdy Charter School, from July 7- 12, Sunday thru Friday to help with their United Methodist affiliated, McCurdy Ministries. The school is located in Espanola, N.M, 90 min. north of Albuquerque. We will stay in dorm-like accommodations and our jobs may include painting, construction, cleaning of classrooms and teacher houses, yard work, and preparing meals! We will have 2 afternoons to explore the area. Youth must have finished 6th grade and accepts ages all the way to 12th grade. Adults and youth from 3 other United Methodist church groups will also share the work that week. You can sign up on the missions bulletin board. We need male and female chaperones! For more info, contact Anne Merkley at (505)401-5345.

Calling out the volunteers! VBS will be held this summer July 22-26th. If you would like to help with VBS please get in touch with Callie Black as soon as possible. VBS takes an incredible amount of time to plan and I need volunteers as soon as I can get them. There will be a teem meeting held May 24th at 5:00pm at the Church. If you have any questions or wish to volunteer please call Callie Black at 281-5117 or 659-2891.

Yard Sale The youth will be having their annual Yard Sale on Saturday, June 1. As summer approaches, look for useable things that you no longer need and think about donating them to the youth for their sale. This is a major fundraiser for them and anything you contribute will be appreciated. However, please, make sure electronics are still working and that they have all the cords and parts needed to use them. The POD for collecting your treasures is scheduled to be here the third week of May. Thank you in advance for your support. Contact Callie Black at the church, (505)281-5117 with any question
