Chinna Balan and Periya Balanwere known widely to be the bestbirdcatchers. They came from theKollimalai Hills and were speciallyinvited to the region of ramanathapuram in order to solvethis problem of the birds. it is because of the invitation from King Baskara Sethupathi thatKurivikaarars began to settle as acommunity around the differentcanals of ramanthapuram. Theycaught the birds, sold them andmade their living doing this. The birds which they caught werehappily eaten by King BaskaraSethupathi and his entourage. Thus the Kurivikaarars earnedmoney and were able to buy all necessities. The lives of the Kuruvikaarars changed after KingBaskara Sethupathi suddenly died.

Since there was no place for us tolive, we congregated on the banksand in the dried-up bed of theVaigai river near Paramakudi.From there we did not have far totravel into the city where we wouldsearch through the refuse for foodand anything else that would helpus.

'One of our biggest problems occured during the rainy season. it rained night and day and thedried-up river became a torrent,and carried away all our possessions. We were not able to do more than sleep on the streets in the city. At that time, a youngwoman called Amala, who lived in Paramakudi, recognized our terrible situation: no lodgings, no food and no work.

Da es für uns keinen Platz gab, siedel-ten wir uns in einem ausgetrocknetenFlussbett desVaigaiflusses oder entlang des Flussufers an. Von dorthatten wir nicht weit in die Stadt, woes viel Abfall gab, in dem wir Essenund andere brauchbare Dinge findenkonnten.

Unser größtes Problem war die Regenzeit. Es goß dann Tag undNacht und das ausgetrocknete Flussbett des Vaigaiflusses füllte sichmit Regenwasser, wurde zum reißenden Strom und schwemmteunsere gesamte Habe mit sich fort. Es blieb uns nichts anderes übrig, alsin der Stadt auf der Straße zu schlafen.Zu dieser Zeit begegneten wir Amala,einer jungen Frau aus Paramakudi, die unsere aussichtslose Situationerkannte: keine Unterkunft, keinEssen, keine Arbeit.

Their vision was that the childrenshould be able to go to kinder-garden and enroll in schools andlearn how to keep healthy throughgood food and hygiene. Theyshould also learn something aboutvalues and social skills. The womenwould be helped in such a way thatempowers them, through settingup self-help groups. These groupswould take care of the health oftheir families and organize communal small scale savings inmicrobanks. Nach der Regenzeit kehrten wir deshalb in das ausgetrocknete Flussbett und ans Flussufer zurück.Amala besuchte uns jeden Tag undsprach mit uns. Sie und Pater AMA,ein Jesuit und der Leiter des Bodhizendos in Perumalmalai naheKodaikanal, wollten uns helfen, vorallem unsern Kindern und Frauen.

Over the years, Amala was able toconvince us parents that it was better for our children to go to pre-school and then to primary school.We would be able to work withoutworrying about our children andthey would receive healthy foodand school clothing. in fact everything would be provided forlessons and to learn how to readand write. Amala started with oneboy, Packiam, and after severalyears more and more of our children went to PEArL Trust Center. PEArL, People’s Educationfor Action among rural Landless,is the organisation that Amala andher friends established under the patronage of Father AMA Samy.Besides the tuition programmes alot of other activities which youwill come to know about later, arenow happening here.

Im Laufe der Jahre konnte Amala dieEltern davon überzeugen, dass es für unsere Kinder besser wäre, denKindergarten, die Vorschule und dieSchule zu besuchen. Eltern würdenohne Sorgen um sie arbeiten können.Sie hätten dort gesundes Essen,Schulkleidung und die für den Unterricht nötigen Dinge und würdenlesen und schreiben lernen. Amalabegann mit einem Jungen, Packiam,und im Laufe der Jahre kamen immermehr Kinder zu PEARL. PEARL People’s Education for Action amongRural Landless ist die Organisation,die Amala, Pater AMA und ihre Freunde gegründet haben. in Pre-school there are now fourgroups of children according totheir age: one group is 2½ to threeyears old; two groups of 3 and 4years old and the last one of 4 to 5 years old. The focus of the education is to develop socio-emotional, physical and cognitiveskills in a balanced way. They alsolearn good behavior and cleanlinessas well as dancing, singing andreciting rhymes. The children arevery happy being there and we parents are able to work knowingthat our children are well lookedafter.

it is sad to say, for our kids it wasdifferent. Since we did not havecommunity/birth certificates and apermanent abode, we did not havethe privilege of enjoying the rights and welfare schemes of thegovernment. This meant that ourchildren were not able to enroll inschools. it was important for us tobe recognized by the Governmentand Amala managed to help us dothis. She mobilised our people, convened a meeting and educatedthem to stand up for their rights.With her motivation, systematicguidance and ideas, we, as onecommunity, stood together andstruggled for years and repeatedour claim for housing. Amalastood behind us and played a continuous supportive role.

Aber traurigerweise kam es für unsere Kinder anders. Da wir keineGeburtsurkunde und keinen festenWohnsitz hatten, standen uns die mit den bürgerlichen Rechten verbundenen staatlichen Subventionen nicht offen. Das bedeutete, dass sich unsere Kinder an keiner öffentlichen Schule einschreiben konnten. Es war für unswichtig, von der Regierung anerkanntzu werden,was wir durch Amalasunermüdlichen Einsatz erreichten. Sie mobilisierte unsere Leute, brachtemehrere Treffen zustande undbestärkte sie darin, für ihre Rechteeinzutreten. Inspiriert durch ihreSachkenntnis, Motivierung, systematische Führung und ihreIdeen taten wir uns als Gruppezusammen und kämpften jahrelanghartnäckig um unser Recht auf festen Wohnsitz. Der Einsatz und dieSachkenntnis von Amala, die immerhinter uns stand, spielten dabei eineentscheidende Rolle.

Finally the government approvedthe application and built a smallhouse for each family. in this way,95 families got a permanent home,and started enjoying citizens’rights and privileges. We now livepeacefully together in one placeand there is a considerable amountof improvement in personal and social milieu. The name of our village is Leelavathi nagar. it is15miles from PEArL Trust centerin Paramakudi away and becauseof that new problems arose.Presently the 3-5 years old childrenare commuted from our area to the PEArL PrE-SCHOOL atPEArL TrUST, by rented Van. And also it is not safe for theyoung lady teachers of PEArl, to go home at night after eveningclasses in Leelavathi nagar.

He stayed with PEArLfor 4 years until he dropped out andjoined his parents and went birdcatching. He visits PEArL oftenand expresses his regret for nothaving used the opportunity he was given. He is now a married manwith two children – a girl and a boy.Packiam wanted to give his childrenwhat he had lost. He is sendingthem to the pre-school regularly. He is very happy that his childrencan continue what he had left unfinished.

However, we still have dreams. One essential element is a community building in Leelavathinagar. it would give us shelter fromrain and sun and we would be ableto continue our activities even during the rainy season. We canconduct community meetings andvarious programmes such as a Evening Tuition Centre and Preschool.

Packiam war der Erste, der dasAbendförderungsprogramm vonPEARL besuchte. Er war damals 5Jahre alt. Er blieb 4 Jahre bei PEARL,bis er die Schule verließ und mitseinen Eltern auf Vogelfang ging.Nun besucht er PEARL oft und bedauert immer wieder, seineChance nicht genutzt zu haben. Er ist jetzt verheiratet und hat 2Kinder, ein Mädchen und einen Jungen. Packiam möchte, daß seineKinder die Chance ergreifen, die ernicht genutzt hat und freut sich sehr,daß seine Kinder nun weiterführen,was er nicht vollendet hat.

Doch wir haben immer nochTräume. Besonders wichtig ist unsder Bau eines Gemeindezentrums inLeelavathi Nagar. Es würde uns vordem Regen und brennender Sonneschützen und es wäre möglic,hselbst in der Regenzeit unsere Aktivitäten weiterzuführen. Wir könnten dann bei jeder WitterungGemeindetreffen veranstalten undviele Vorhaben, wie zum Beispieleine Vorschule für unsere Kinderverwirklichen.
