DIRECTORS NOTE

The context in which Euripides The Trojan Women was first performed in 415 BC was strikingly different from the one we view it in today For one thing this play about women was originally delivered to an all male audience it was performed outdoors as part of a religious festival in an amphitheater that sat close to 10000 people Moreover the social structures culture globa l and political outlook of the Athenians tor whom it was written were radically different from our own As tlle source of much ofWestern intellectual and cultural heritage it is easy to assume the Greeks were like usbut one must not forget as one scholar put it the utter Greekness of the Greeks And yet there is something strikingly contemporary about this play something that has kept scholars and dramatists of every age reading and performing it for centuries One imagines while watching or reading it that Euripides was Titing for this very moment in time and one wonders just how far the human race has really come

The text for this production was assembled over the summer in a musty Brooklyn basement from about six or eight different translations Working in Butler Library this summer gave me plenty of opportunity to read different translators versions of the play none of which I found fit my own personal vision so I created my own I am indebted to the various translators whose Nords I have borrowed mangled rearranged and otherwise mishandled and to my talented cast and production team who have allowed me to bring this project to fruition
