The Bishop’s Visitation & Confirmation Sunday, April 30 – TWO SERVICES 8:30 am & 11:00 am

ishop George Young will be making his annual visitation on Sunday April 30, 2017! We

will have TWO SERVICES that day, which is a departure from what we normally do. However, since this will be Bishop Young’s last time to visit Good Sam in an official capacity, we decided to do things a bit different. NOTE: Confirmation will be held at the 11:00 am service. Bishop George will also be with us during the Adult Sunday School Class at 9:45 am and will meet with the Confirmands prior to the 11:00 am service. There will be a simple cake reception after the 11:00 am service in honor of our Confirmands. You’ll also have an opportunity at that time to bid Bishop Young farewell. Please make plans to join us on this bittersweet day. –J. Dunn

NEW Adult Sunday School Beginning Sunday, May 7 9:45 am – Henslee Hall

n Adult Christian Education/Formation on Sunday mornings in May we will continue to build upon our understanding of what it means to be an Episcopalian.

Father Howard's sermon on getting a good grip on the football of our faith & passing it on has inspired us to be mindful of what it means to be an Episcopalian. It is in a good grasp of our faith that we can both lean on it for our families and ourselves when we need it. In addition, we can articulate it in order to pass it on to others as well.

Please plan to join us May 7, 14, and 21 as we discuss: Episcopal Polity (May 7), Episcopal History (May 14), and an Instructed Eucharist (May 21). – Caroline+

Book Group May 9 – 6:00 pm at Newk’s

he Good Samaritan Book Group will meet on TUESDAY, May 9, 2017 at Newk’s Café at 6:00 PM. The book selection for the month of May is The

House We Grew Up In by Lisa Jewell. Meet the Bird family. They live in a honey-colored house in a picture-perfect Cotswold’s village, with rambling, unkempt gardens stretching beyond. Pragmatic Meg, dreamy Beth, and tow-headed twins Rory and Rhys all attend the village school and eat home-cooked meals together every night. Their father is a sweet gangly man named Colin, who still looks like a teenager with floppy hair and owlish, round-framed glasses. Their mother is a beautiful hippy named Lorelei, who exists entirely in the moment. And she makes every moment sparkle in her children's lives. Then one Easter weekend, tragedy comes to call. The event is so devastating that, almost imperceptibly, it begins to tear the family apart. Years pass as the children become adults, find new relationships, and develop their own separate lives. Soon it seems as though they've never been a family at all. But then something happens that calls them back to the house they grew up in -- and to what really happened that Easter weekend so many years ago. Told in gorgeous, insightful prose that delves deeply into the hearts and minds of its characters, The House We Grew Up In is the captivating story of one family's desire to restore long-forgotten peace and to unearth the many secrets hidden within the nooks and crannies of home. We hope you will join us for great discussion. Future Selections: June – The Canterbury Sisters by Kim Wright, July: Upstairs at the White House by J.B. West and Mary Lynn Kotz, August: The Aviator’s Wife by Melanie Benjamin, September: The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. – Mary Embler Interested in Making Good Sam Your Spiritual Home? MAY 7 - JUSTICE KNOX Justice Knox is a new faith-based organization that works to actively uncover injustice and mobilize the community to create just, fair & effective solutions. Through Justice Knox (Knoxville Area Justice Ministry), congregations of diverse faith backgrounds act together in response to the biblical mandate to “do justice”. Justice Knox is inspired by the work of 20 broad-based Justice Ministry organizations in other cities. By organizing people in congregations, we build Justice Knox to possess power to successfully hold our community’s political, economic and social systems accountable to justice and fairness.

MAY 14 - GRACE POINT SPECIAL CAMPS (JIM MUIR KAMP 4 KIDS & CAMP BILLY JOHNSON) Camp Billy Johnson is a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of East Tennessee held at Grace Point Retreat Center and provided by donations. Well into a fourth decade, they provide a free summer camp experience to children in rising 3rd - 8th grades who cannot normally afford to go to summer camp. The campers come from predominantly urban areas of Knoxville and Chattanooga. Camp Billy Johnson focuses on one-on-one attention for every camper providing an environment of love, compassion and encouragement. See also the description for Jim Muir Kamp 4 Kids, listed below. MAY 21 - MISSION OF HOPE The mission statement of Mission of Hope is to provide Christian ministries during appropriate seasons of the year, including Christmas and Easter, through a system of delivering clothes, food, toys, and school supplies to impoverished families; to assist in repair of existing homes or relocating to other homes when appropriate; to provide scholarships for qualifying children of the area; to assist in developing skills or other expertise for the creation of new or expanded jobs in the area; and to assist in locating jobs for persons who are willing to relocate outside the area. Last year because of the generosity of so many people, the Mission of Hope was able to help over 17,000 children and their families with food, clothes, toys and hygiene items. Our donation will help to support this program. MAY 28 - GRACE POINT SPECIAL CAMPS (CAMP BILLY JOHNSON & JIM MUIR KAMP 4 KIDS) Jim Muir Kamp 4 Kids is for children of incarcerated parents. broadens their horizons and helps break the cycle. In a loving, grace-filled environment, they experience and learn the benefits of group support, cooperation and self-discovery. Many have never received anything without something expected in return. They learn that God loves them unconditionally. Held at Grace Point Retreat Center this is a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of East Tennessee, run entirely on donations. See also the description for Camp Billy Johnson, listed above for May 14.

Your Help Is Needed! Camp Billy Johnson & Jim Muir Kamp 4 Kids

ood Sam has been a big supporter of Camp Billy Johnson and Jim Muir Kamp 4 Kids in years past. As summer approaches, the folks at Grace Point, where

the camps are held, are beginning to gather items necessary to provide these great kids and teens with an unforgettable experience. Good Samaritans are needed to help them in their mission!

Grace Point outreach camps Camp Billy Johnson and Jim Muir Kamp 4 Kids provide the entire diocese with a great opportunity to minister to kids throughout East Tennessee. However, it is common that these campers come to camp with limited or no supplies. Help us in our ministry by donating the following supplies necessary for camp:

-Bathing suits for girls and boys ages 9-18 -New/gently used clothing for girls & boys ages 9-18 -Toiletries -Towels -Reusable plastic water bottles -Water shoes or shoes that can be worn in the lake

There will be a donation bin set up in Henslee Hall to put

donated items. A camp experience can change a child's life. We invite you to join Grace Point in their ministry.

CAMP BILLY JOHNSON is a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of East Tennessee. Well into our fourth decade, we provide a free summer camp experience to children in rising 3rd - 8th grades who cannot normally afford to go to summer camp.

Their campers come from predominantly urban areas of Knoxville and Chattanooga. Camp Billy Johnson focuses on one-on-one attention for every camper. The camp is staffed by high-school youth (rising sophomores through rising college freshmen) from around the diocese, as well as clergy and lay adults.

JIM MUIR KAMP 4 KIDS is for children of incarcerated parents. The camp is named for a St. James Episcopal Church member who led prison ministries for many years. Check out the photos from camp last year. Undie Sunday Daughters of the King Event Sunday, August 6 – Mark Your Calendar!

We are advertising this early so that you will be able to take advantage of “Back to School” sales and other shopping opportunities during the summer. Thank you in advance. - The DOK members

ow! It hardly seems possible that the Search and Nominating Committee has been at work for ten months. As I write this, our work is nearly

finished. On Friday, April 28, 2017, we will meet with the Standing Committee to recommend to them those whom we believe should stand for election as the 5th Bishop of the Diocese of East Tennessee. Following that meeting, the Standing Committee will publicly announce the slate of candidates for the election. Once the candidates have been introduced to the Diocese, the Transition Committee will take over and lead us through the walkabouts, the election and the ordination of our next Bishop. Stay tuned and check our website at www.bishopsearch.dioet.org on the evening of April 28 for names, pictures, and biographies of the slate of nominees.

Every one of us who have served on the SNC feels blessed in having been part of this process and are truly thankful to everyone who has assisted us. Thank you to everyone who completed our survey. Thank you, to those who joined us for the seven focus group meetings. Thank you to all who submitted names for our consideration. Thank you to those who filled out lengthy application packets, endured 90-minute video interviews by committee members, visited us in Knoxville for a three-day retreat and prayerfully discerned with us as we worked to identify those individuals who are the best fit for our Diocese at this time. Thank you to everyone who dropped us an email, stopped to chat or found other ways to offer us encouragement. Most of all though, we want to thank each and every one of you for your prayers. We could not have done this work without your constant support. We have felt it and are truly grateful. Thank you! - Joe Vrba, Chair, Search and Nominating Committee
