INTRODUCTION

These translations and transcriptions, of which the Koryu yōshin shintō ryū document is a part of, were produced inthe interests of the American Federation of Jujutsu. Any party or person is free to avail themselves of a copy of thistext or any other found therein. It would be appreciated if you would acknowledge the AFJ in doing so.

THE DENSHO SET OF SCROLLS CONSISTS OF THE FOLLOWING FIVE (5) SCROLLS:

The document, as originally posted by the Japanese (at the following web address : “http://bujutsu.jp/a19.html”) isdated between 1850-1910. One knows that the scroll had been copied and recopied, from master to master, for somelength of time by those dates. Ergo, we are dealing with a document that has sections originally penned on or aroundthe earlier 19th Century, and some of which possibly had come from Yoshin scrolls (Akiyama-Miura) as early as thevery late 18th Century. Any and all textual additions added later in time, as the Yōshin shintō ryū had grown, so it'sMokuroku also got larger. Hence the language in the text is a tiny bit of a conglomerate of late 18 th through late 19th

Century Japanese, having a rather specific genre of idioms and terms that are subject-specific (namely, Japanese Budoand its philosophies.)

This document contains a certain number of terminologies as well as person and place names, that are rather difficultto render with absolute certainty into the Romaji script used to represent pronunciation of Japanese language. In somecases, internal evidence within the passages of the text itself provides likable clues, by way of Kana clauses in theentries, to what Romaji should be used. Concrete usage of these clues was considered appropriate to the occasion oftranslation and transcription. All personal names and most place names may have been rendered with a possiblemargin of error. Minor exceptions apply, such person or technique names that were easily recognized, for example.Place names and personal or surnames in the 18th and 19th century did not follow modern Japanese dialecticpronunciations. Without a more precise guide to help render technique, person and place names, it is very difficult tobe certain how they should be rendered and pronounced. Technical Information: Judging by the content of technique listings and lineage listings that were providedthroughout the mokuroku itself, this Yōshin shintō ryū scroll apparently represents the Akiyama-Miura line of the

Yōshin ryū itself, and of the 18th and 19th Centuries at that. Sometimes the Yōshin shintō ryū line is said to be just analternate branch of the original form of the Shintō yōshin ryū (or, the other way around, depending upon the opinionstated.) Other lines of these Ryūha had existed, some are said to have become extinct by this late date.

Originally the final section of the Densho (Yoshin Ryu Hiketsu No Jo) was not available, this changed in April of 2017 and the addition was made to the translation,

making it necessary to reissue the PDF at that time.

Here in the last word of the introduction, I hope to make it perfectly clear that only linguistics and legitimateacademics was applied in the course of rendering translation and the making of these transcriptions, hoping to remaintrue to the original content and feel of the Yōshin shintō ryū mokuroku itself. This was thought best, so as to provide amore authentic experience that is devoid of 'stained glass' colorations which offers to obscure the scroll's content. Imean, namely, that one ought not to approach such important works of translation, having a biased view caused byinsistence upon interpreting things according to one's own beliefs or martial arts experiences.

LIST OF SECTIONS

The document is divided into the following sections, which may correspond to the degreesof adeptness which one has acquired in the Yōshin shintō ryū school. Apparently, thecustom was to record these sections (in whole or in part) straight off the Mokuroku andgive them as proof of certification at that level of proficiency. It seems that these 'sub-documents' so produced have the title of the section itself. Other schools follow the samekind of custom.

Although unsustainable, it is said of Jujutsu practitioners that [Jujutsu] isn't exactly the basis of being amoral person and yet the occasion of a civilized country [Japan] nevertheless is that its residents [must]make usage of the sword art.1 The matter of advantage over death and that one's person would berepeatedly trampled upon, and that alas, a useless defense is in obvious error! This has occurred oftensince olden times. The matter of the base advantage of one's whole person when in the expression ofsurprise at the unknown, is this not the larger reason that Yoshin Shinto Ryu Jujutsu exists??

About Hand-washingThe water of cotton washcloths is better to have hand-washing water from, the same as water taken in by plants, rather than by tears of grief from times of hidden sorrows being carried away therein upon broken promises. I prefer to make off with an entire pond of fresh water!!3 The coming of the Sword of the Sun Dispelling Storm-clouds. Accept heaven, accept earth (or, 'the land'), accept empty skies growing brighter along secret avenues in this life despite scolding shadows and growling bad luck. One draws water from the usual social standing in one's country as if with the three virtues of the demon repelling bright sword. One [place] of this route is 'Suikoku' [or 'Mizutake'] the “Grain waters” vital point, as forthat the trachea (“wind pipe”) one foot ('shaku' a Japanese 'foot') two inches ('sůn' a Japanese 'inch') thenbecomes as nine pipes [e.g.; the esophagus and trachea] being used in the pulmonic storehouse systems[e.g. some part of the cardio-pulminary system ]. Regarding the protected back of the hand of humanbeings the Insei “Elegant sound” vital point comes out from there. As for [the sense of] taste the activepreference for spicey/salty/bitter flavoring is made in the pulverisings of the colon and large intestines, bymeans of these existing various known passageways, kuden (“Oral tradition”) applies.

Concerning the Ganke “Wild Goose Down” vital point, visible to be struck beside both sides of the chest, regarding this passageway at the point penetrating into the regulation of the double storehouses of the heartand lungs. Of both the heart and lungs, here located somewhat within is the unreceived Ki vital energy of theforemost impurity. The passageway of the attack point is somewhat both sides each, known and understood inthese are the most heart impurities [of Ki vital energy], As concerns both the heart and lungs, is unreceivedimpure Ki vital energy of the Suikoku “Grain Waters” vital point in the 'Lower burner' [part of Sino-Japanesecardiology]. As concerns Suigetsu “Moon Water” vital point, for example, the killing of grave importance of the naturalflowing deepest secrets, the point which is divided passageways of the storehouse seat of everything. Asconcerns this Suigetsu “Moon Water” vital point, its to attack in upper and lower Yō “Yang / Sunlight” vitalpoint middle of the stomach, by means of the utterances of Ikajo shinhu [the “storehouse of Divineassistance”] the killing of everything depends upon this principle. This is the living-center commanding theKi passageways which are receiving of fundamental nature, Always this seat-center surely receives Yin andYang [Ki vital energy], this seat-center bearing fruit of various [?bodily?] behaviours, going no farther in thestorehouse-seat than of a little regulation of death's acceptance? Seeing within the far off place as if to bethere at the seat, this Suigetsu “Moon Water” is to keep using life, the former masters, for example hadpassageways of the 'Not-Doing-Place', inevitable discreetness, Kuden “oral” teaching.

Prediction of the passage of time rests in both eyes [e.g.; observation], concerning the head of the circleamong the Heavens [e.g.; “upper government”] is to be indistinguishable therefore able to use the day and night-time dividing Yin from Yang. Using both eyes with people [e.g. 'Both eyes' implies 'not just one' but instead look clearly

and closely], in teaching oneself to use both eyes with utterances and the passage of time, At mid-day [e.g. at

the middle of an event or episode] the three steps of becoming the raven [e.g.; the one who is not recognized; anonymity] allthe month long [e.g. each increment of the episode or event] using the moonlight, there is Kuden “oral” tradition.

[ Trans Note: the opening of the passage can also be translated as: “Attacking on [basis of] Time rests in both eyes [e.g.; observation],...” but still carries the same meaningof observing over passage of time to gauge the likely outcomes of events. The passage here accounts for levels of activity that are governmental and military, not just inter-personal. “Dividing Yin from Yang” means 'discerning strengths and weakness' and is not merely a reference to how one uses day time and night time. The idiom used herein this context 'discerning strengths and weakness' means both the enemies and one's own... withdrawing or curtailing oneself if one is momentarily weak, for example.]¤ [ Trans Note: the idiom “both eyes” is also the same as the word 'binoculars' (they did have them and telescopes back then) and so also it means using these kinds ofdevices. “Both eyes” should then be taken to mean the ranges of possible vision: watching things close to oneself and things not immediately close. Near and far, whetherin time or space, ergo it also means to calculate, based off what one sees, the likely outcome of near-in-time-and -space events as well as far-off-in-time-and-space. ] ¤[Important Trans Note: Here the last passage of the Mokuroku section purposefully treats the word Keiraku ( 経絡 ) “Meridian lines” as it it were the word “passagecorridors” or “pathways” as if to coming and going against an enemy or rival, for example, to gauge them or to take actions to effect likely outcomes of events. Adaptationof the essential ideologies of Sino-Japanese medical tradition regarding the Meridian lines is standard to the Akiyama, Miura and Takagi type Yoshin schools (possiblyothers as well). For clarification on this: the 'Heart Meridian' when interpreted this way (as passageways or pathways of action against an enemy or rival) are the routeswhich will dis-heart the enemy or rival, effect morale and bring feint heartedness. The “Liver” Meridian here are routes that effect religious and spiritual aspects, treated asif religion and spirituality were the purifiers of the body (much the way the liver serves the body as an organ), for example. The “Stomach” Meridian interpreted like this,of course, means that one effects available supplies of food and drink to perhaps deprive the enemy or rival. The doctrines of Kijutsu (“Techniques of manipulating Ki lifeenergy”) are bound up in all this. In order to understand the Yōshin Shintō Ryū Keiraku No Maki (the entry we are discussing) merely re-read the parts of it bearing thistranslators note in mind and you will better understand what it says and why it reads the way it does.]

SUMMARY

The text reveals that the school Yōshin shintō koryū is not very large. It has a limited number oftechniques and technical sections, this is fairly indicative of most forms of Akiyama descended stylesof Jujutsu. Many people believe that Yōshin shintō ryū is just a differenced branch of Shintō yōshin ryūbut this might not be entirely accurate? On the other hand, the two schools would have nearly identicalmokuroku scrolls, if so. We'll see if any Shintō yōshin ryū scrolls show up?

There were some techniques that we do not recognize and could find no record of the technique name(by which to render the Romaji of the name.) When reviewed for possible pronunciation, many werefound to sound like already known technical nomenclature, we presumed that would put it firmly in theball park. Furthermore, some known technique names do not seem to be supported by the kanji used towrite the name. For a very good example, take the technique (袖車 -- Sode Guruma Sleeve Wheel)found in the Idori beginning section. By most Akiyama based listings this should perhaps be somethinglike (襟車; 衿車 or 領車 -- Eri Guruma Collar Wheel) but it seems obviously to be 'sode' (sleeve)and not 'eri' (collar). Similarly the text has (車釼 -- Shaken Blade Wheel) and not (車下 -- ShakeWheel Down) as one would perhaps expect? Sometimes the technique is close but no cigar. Possiblythey are variations of the known Akiyama descended nomenclature? Some items one would expectseem to be missing entirely from the more standard forms of Idori and Tachiai sections of the Akiyamadescended school mokurokus. Due to some minor difficulties rendering Romaji technique names, thetext may be revised in the future, if more correct Romaji renderings and other relevant technicalinformation are found (dated notations will be placed.) This is primary Version Three (first issue dated3/28/2016) of the transcription PDF text file.

OTHER SCROLLS THAT ARE ASSOCIATIVE TO THIS YŌSHIN SHINTŌ KORYŪ SCROLL

Well, there would likely be certain auxiliary scrolls of whatever sort, such as Kakushi buki weapons scrolls, most are quite small. If I encounter any, they may be translated and transcribed as well, to appear as a PDF file themselves? If I have opportunity I may do so.

TECHNICAL COMPARISON OF THE YŌSHIN SHINTO RYŪ

The following two Mokuroku Jujutsu technical listings are comprehensive excerpts from the Mainline Akiyama Yōshin Ryū and the divergent line, most probably representing Akiyama-Miura Yōshin Ryū both are from the Mid 1700's. Comparing material content to one another and the Yōshin Shintō Ryū itself was the intention. One can see the similarities and the differences quite easily.

The Yōshin Ryū school in general was considerably smaller in the 1600 and 1700 hundreds, as you cansee it had by far fewer techniques listed in its curriculum of Jujutsu unarmed combat. This isunderstandable, the lengthier number of techniques took another 100 years to develop, of course. Thisparticular form of the Yōshin Ryū is largely indicative of Akiyama-Miura schools but the Takagischools of the Yōshin Ryū were similar with much fewer techniques than one sees on the modernmokuroku. One can see that this diverged school (diverged from the Mainline Akiyama schooladdressed next in this summary) has striking similarity to Take-no-uchi and Takagi ryūha of Jujutsu, just as some sources have claimed in the past. However, as you shall shortly see, the Mainline Akiyamais quite different in this regard. It bears striking similarity to the school above (and ergo to the YōshinShintō Koryū itself) whilst lacking those same similarities to either Take-no-uchi or Takagi ryūha seenabove and in the Mokuroku of the Yōshin Shintō Koryū. Which is why some sources say that Akiyamaisn't the same at all.

TECHNICAL NOTE:I had some question about the Order-of-Arrangement of the techniques withintheir sections (which were visibly accurate in and of themselves.) But this washow the source had listed them so I had no choice but to do likewise. The sourcehad were two Academic papers made by and in conjunction with the Japanese ofcertain Universities. The Main Line Akiyama Yōshin Ryū school was considerably from the other mid 1700's school, as youcan see it had different structure and techniques. Some listings in its curriculum of Jujutsu unarmedcombat are the same (more or less.) Others are quite different. This is understandable, the differencingof techniques and structure would be expected to develop, of course. This particular form of the YōshinRyū is largely a parent school but one sees that it is very different from the Yōshin Shintō Ryū itself.

From Mid to Late 20th Century Various Selections

for Comparison

These selections were added in the April 2016 Edition of the PDF file to be of further assistance whencomparing the (19th Century school of) Koryū Yōshin Shintō Ryū. The schools presented in the next partof the summary are middle to late 20th Century incarnations, or they are the descriptions of the sameschool(s) given during that time period.

What does it mean, to say that some of them may be descriptions of schools as given during the middle20th Century? It was not uncommon among the Japanese, and so their Western Budoka followed suit, tohave entered and perpetrated various (technical) descriptions of the budo schools even when the schoolin question wasn't 20th Century and really (according to the historical records) did not have quite thesame content and structure as indicated. Sometimes the 20 th C. description was differenced only by theusage of then modern kanji in place of the more archaic characters found originally. Other times, there'smore to it than just this 'adjustment', naturally. What was the basic purpose of the likes of all these 20th

Century descriptions? There is the $40 question. Firstly, they were used to study and refer to the olderschools whom were sometimes no longer around. Secondly, of schools that were still around but closedoff, resisting exposure and so some sorts of these descriptions came to exist. Of such descriptions, theyappeared in text books and martial arts magazines with quite a bit of regularity, sometimes (by way oftranslation) all over the world.

How many such descriptions appear hereafter in this text? The first two specimen examples probablyare, judging by certain details found within them. The others are harder to determine, either way. Howaccurate are these? Accurate enough to include them as good comparison material.

One can see that, from the given listings dated Mid to Late 1700's that we consulted first, this middle20th Century representation shows that (this form of) the Yōshin Ryū had significant developments suchas one would expect over some such length of time. When in time it had these developments (prior totermination of it's branch lineage) is another question entirely.

The next listing is of a similar school, the Yoshin Koryu (揚心古流) One can see that, from the originallistings dated Mid to Late 1700's that we consulted first, and the Densho set these writings summarize, that this next middle 20th Century example shows direct relationship to that same (form of) the YōshinRyū and whatever of certain significant similarities to the Takenouchi or Takagi schools of the YōshinRyū such as are visible and to be expected in some cases, where these schools have crossed over some-what with each other in these lengths of time. Some are not cross-over but instead these developmentsrepresent earlier descent from the same schools and arts that gave us Takenouchi, Takagi and Kitō Ryūas well as several others besides.

One can see that this middle 20th Century representation shows certain similarities to (this form of) the Yōshin Ryū and had other significant developments such as are quite different. I think this school is now technically extinct? When in time it had these developments (prior to termination of it's branch lineage) is another question entirely.

The next listing is of another very famous and similar school, the Shin No Shintō Ryu (真之神道流).As far as I know this school is not extinct yet, either? One can see even more similarities, anddifferences, in its direct relationship to the subject of our exploration, the Koryū Yōshin Shintō Ryū andwhatever of the significant similarities to any other branches of the Yōshin Ryū such as might be visiblebesides.
