she tried, the self-described “huge naturelover” had trouble captur-ing landscapes on canvas.Schlaff had no such diffi-culty with her watery sub-jects.

“Water is a huge love. Igrew up on the water, andbeing in Michigan we’reall surrounded by water,”

she said. “With fish, thesubject is a very inter-esting combination … ofwater and colors.”

Schlaff’s professors atMSU encouraged her toexplore different meth-ods, using paint to conveythe excitement of the out-doors.

the first things to attractbuyers, she added, andthey’re drawn in evenmore when they discoverthe subject is fish.

Applying as an Emerg-ing Artist – the category

Richards had requestedthe board’s approval ofcontract, at a cost of$67,500, withInternationalCity/CountyManagementAssoc., basedin Wash-ington, D.C.to come upwith data tocompare thetownship’s current fire, police and ambulance ser-vices with alternatives.

One main driver behindthe initiative are revenueprojections for comingfiscal years due to erodingproperty values and cutsproposed in state funding.

Richards said the emer-gency departments areeffective, but it makessense to evaluate otheroptions to providing themost expensive service.

Combined, the police andfire departments comprise54 percent, or just under$8.9 million, of the town-ship’s general fund budget.

One main focus for thestudy was privatizing thetownship’s emergency med-

ical services. But the reaction last year

to the potential closing ofthe Central Fire Stationshowed township officialspeople were concernedabout ambulance service,so any new version wouldhave to have been equal orbetter to current EMS ser-vices, and the target forsavings has been pegged ata hefty $750,000 annually, says an analysis by Rich-ards .

Then there is the polit-ical reality. Veenstra saidhe received several phonecalls and as much as 80emails, and said other boardmembers had received alarge negative response toprivatizing the ambulanceservice.

The fire and EMS budgetis $4,145,790 for 2011, butthe township expects to beget $925,0000 in ambulancefees, which will be lost if aprivate firm took over.

Typically, staffing by pri-vate companies is one para-

medic and one emergencymedical technician pervehicle, while the townshiphas two paramedics perambulance.

International Firefight-ers Association Local 1600president Ken Phinney, which represents the town-ship’s professional firefight-ers, had said he believesprivatization of EMS iswhere the township washeaded.

It would allow the town-ship to cut 30 firefighterpositions, he has said.

Also to be analyzed aspart of the studty was theuse of part-paid firefightersor police officers trained tofight fires as public safetyofficers.

The township has aver-aged about 13 fires a yearsince 2004, of which fiveeach year were consideredmajor.

Overall, the townshipresponded to about 3,800calls, 80 percent of whichwere EMS runs.

MERIDIAN TWP. — The reversal ofa rezoning for a medical clinic will beon the ballot for the township’s votersto decide — but not until August of2012.

Scheduling the controversial elec-tion is seen as prudent both by thetownship board and the organizers ofthe petition drive to get the questionon the ballot.

“The board wanted to avoid thecost of a special election, and thenext available time for a township-wide vote is the primary next year,”said Julie Brixie, the township’s trea-surer.

The board unanimously decidedMay 5 to put the referendum on themedical clinic’s current zoning on theballot for August, 2012, but Brixie

said the board may move it up in thecalendar if Michigan has a presiden-tial primary.

The property, a former daycarefacility in the midst of a office park, isowned by Shannon Wiggins, D.O., andher husband.

The township board voted onMarch 1 to rezone the property, 4133Okemos Road, from residential tooffice zoning, citing the zoning forsurrounding properties.

The site is a former Kindercarewhich for the last two years has beenvacant. Work on remodeling the sitewas in its initial phases before thecontroversy erupted.

Dr. Wiggins, who has a family prac-tice clinic on Michigan Avenue, wantsto convert the building to a medicalclinic, and has said part of the prac-tice will include evaluating patientsto receive medical marijuana cards.

She has said the site will not becomea dispensary some day.

Petition driveAttorneys William Fahey and Ste-

phen Schultz, whose office is nextdoor to the clinic, were leaders inthe petition drive that gained enoughsignatures to put the issue on theballot.

The two claim the medical clinicwill eventually be a dispensary, andwill be a mill for medical marijuanacertifications.

The township has no ordinancesthat specifically deal with medicalmarijuana dispensaries, preferringinstead to let other local ordinancescontrol the operations.

The township is home to one dis-pensary, located in a non-descriptoffice building on Lake LansingRoad.

OKEMOS – Dedicated gar-deners know having a com-post bin is an easy way tocreate good dirt for plantsand keep things like egg-shells and coffee groundsout of the trash.

Students at OkemosHigh School are puttingthat principle into actionby building a compost binbehind the school’s green-house.

The project, carried outby the school’s Students forEnvironmental Action Clubin celebration of Earth Day,will have a variety of uses.

Junior Saloni Dagli, theclub’s president, said the binwill eventually hold every-thing from plant materialto food scraps from the caf-eteria.

“It’s great to have anidea and see it coming intoformation,” she said.

The bin will have adouble wall, science teacherDavid Chapman said, andwill be insulated to keep it

warmer in the winter andcooler in the summer.

Red worms will keepthe soil aerated, which willbreak down scraps quickly.

The Okemos cafeteriastaff will put carrot topsand scraps into special binstobe placed by the club inthe kitchen.

The compost bin itself isbeing funded with the helpof a $485 grant from theMichigan Community Ser-vice Commission.

“We had been thinkingabout making a compost binfor school to reduce thefood waste from the kitch-ens,” Dagli said. “We founda grant that matched whatwe wanted to do.”

The Home Depot inOkemos gave the studentsa break on the cost of woodand other materials, whileHammond Farms in EastLansing is donating gravelfor the bottom of the bin tohelp with drainage.

The students were also

helped by staffers at Michi-gan Energy Options in EastLansing.

Club members arehoping to get containerssoon and begin collectingkitchen scraps before theend of the school year.

Long-term plans includegrowing vegetables – nour-ished, of course, by dirtfrom the compost bin – andgive them to the cafeteriafor use in meals.

Chapman said club mem-bers will also be able to col-lect scraps from the school’scooking classes.

“It’s a neat and orderlyway to deal with plant wastefrom the greenhouse,” headded.

“It also reinforces theidea that things alwayscycle. Matter in our worldjust doesn’t disappear, and alarge part of what we throwaway can be composted.”

HOLT- To say that theOkemos Chieftains girl’ssoccer team has a brightfuture ahead, might be a bitof an understatement.

The Chieftains relied onstrong defense and two oftheir outstanding freshmenin a 3-0 win over Holt ina CAAC Blue matchup lastTuesday at Holt.

Kristelle Yewah scored

two first-half goals, andAshton Miller scored a goalof her own in the much-anticipated league game.

“They were great forus today,” Okemos coachBrian Guggemos said of theChieftains freshmen duo.“We still have a lot of thingsto work on and a lot of roomto improve, but wheneveryou can leave here witha 3-0 win, you feel prettygood about it.”

Holt goalie Kori Ramirezrecorded six saves in goalfor Holt, but the Chieftainsheld Holt’s offense in tactfor much of the game, onlyallowing two total shots ongoal.

With the victory,Okemos improves to 8-1-4overall and remains perfectin league play with a 4-0mark. Guggemos believesthat his team has the chanceto complete a special season

this year, but he says thatthe key will be how hardthey are willing to work atit.

“The girls, they want toplay hard, but I want to seethem do that at all timesduring a game,” Guggemossaid.

“If we can do that andplay with the energy weneed to, I know that thesky’s the limit for thisteam

HASLETT- Haslettcoach Henry Brunnschwei-ler figured that the No. 1 sin-gles match between Masonfreshman Abby Perkins andHaslett sophomore EmmyVirkus, had the potential tobe one of the top matches inthe area this spring.

Brunnschweiler wasspot on with his predictionas the much anticipatedmatchup was as good asadvertised.

After two-and-a-halfhours of tennis, which fea-tured 25 games and onedeciding tiebreaker, it wasPerkins who came out ontop, defeating Virkus 2-0(7-5, 7-6(7-5)).

“I knew it would be tight, but that was even betterthan I thought,” Brunnsch-weiler said of the Perkins/Virkus match. “It’s toughthat one girl had to win

and one had to lose, justbecause they were asevenly matched as it couldpossibly get.”

While Perkins helpedMason win the No. 1 sin-gles match, it was Haslett, which ended up comingout on top when it wasall said-and-done, defeat-ing the Bulldogs 5-3 in aCAAC crossover matchuplast Monday afternoon.

“Both teams wereoutstanding today, butcredit Haslett, they wereextremely strong,” Masoncoach Jim D’Angelo said.“What we really wantedto get out of this matchwas great competition atall eight flights, and that’sexactly what we got.”

As good as that No. 1 sin-gles matchup was, the No. 2singles match was equallyas impressive.

Haslett senior MorganPatterson defeated Masonsophomore Emily Hall in a

Sean [email protected]

Haslett’s netters outlast Masonthree-set thriller, 2-1 (6-1,3-6, 7-5), which proved tobe the winning match forthe Vikings.

“I was expecting thatto be one of the biggestmatches for both myselfand for our team this year,”Patterson said. “Mason is astate ranked team, so thatis big for us to leave herewith a win today.”

With the victory, Has-

lett improves to 9-0 overalland will likely face Masonagain at next week’s Divi-sion 3 regional tournamentat Haslett.

“We’re going be neckand neck with Mason forthe rest of the year- weknow that,” Brunnschwei-ler said. “Round one wentto Haslett today, but roundtwo and three are on theway.”
