FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Friends,

I cannot believe that summer is drawing to a close. I am sure

many of you feel the same way. I hope and pray that this summer was a

time of rest, reflection, and relaxation. I hope that you have let God be a

part of your summer. God doesn’t want to be on our “to do” list, God

wants to be a part of our lives, every day.

One way to make God a part of your life is to try a time of daily

devotions, prayer, or scripture reading. Over the last few months I have

introduced different books of the Bible to you in the hopes you would take

the time to read them. If you haven’t, don’t fear, it’s never too late to start!

September’s Bible book is the Gospel of Matthew. Matthew is

unique in many ways. Found in Matthew are the stories of the Magi, the

beatitudes, the Canaanite woman, the great commission, and many other

stories we know. But there are parts we don’t know.

The one part that you might have trouble with is the very beginning.

Matthew begins with what is called a genealogy, a list of ancestors of

Joseph. At first you might be tempted to skip it, but don’t. There are 4

women listed in the genealogy that show us something.

Let’s start with Ruth, who has her own biblical book. Ruth was a

widow who in an effort to ensure her mother-in-law’s future used her

womanly ways to convince Boaz he should marry her.

Tamar, whose story you may not know. (Found in Genesis 38)

She was a widow and by law her father-in-law Judah should have given

her as a wife to his other son. When he would not do it, she tricked her

father in law into giving her a child by pretending to be a prostitute.

Bathsheba who is listed as the wife of Uriah, had an affair with King

David and then her husband was killed in battle under David’s orders to

hide the affair.

And last but not least, Rahab, who was a prostitute whose name

literally means prostitute. She helped save the spies who under Joshua’s

orders were checking out Jericho.

Why are they here? To show us something, a main focus of the

Gospel of Matthew. God’s love is not just for certain people, God’s love is

for everyone. The Gospel of Matthew seems to be written to remind us all

of this deep truth. God’s love is not something we are to keep to ourselves

and our families, it is something meant to be shared; with everyone.

The other main focus can be found in the very last verse of

Matthew: “And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

How often can we feel alone or lost? These words are a good reminder

that Jesus is always with us, no matter what.

Happy Reading!

God’s peace,

Pastor Serena

THANK YOU I would like to thank everyone for the birthday wishes for my 80th birthday. Also thank you for the beautiful altar flowers from my family. God bless, Janet Seitz Thank you for the beautiful flowers. They are being enjoyed by both our residents and staff. St.Elizabeth’s Home of Lancaster. Dear friends of Town Line Lutheran, Thank you so much for the lovely bouquet of flowers in celebration of our anniversary weekend. They graced our Sanctuary during worship and we moved them to the Fellowship hall for our luncheon. It was a memorable weekend as we gave God thanks for the opportunity to be His people for 200 years. In Christ, Kathy Evans, Pastor of Alden Presbyterian Church. Dear Wonderful Town Line Church members and staff, Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for allowing our Girl Scout troop to meet at your church all these years. Sincerely, Patty Schieder, Troop 37 Leader; Ellen Herget, Asst. leader and girls. From Barbara Sims and family to my Town Line Lutheran Church family:

Our sincerest gratitude for all that you did to help us deal with

Clarence’s passing. The kind words, prayers, beautiful notes and cards,

your presence at the funeral home and at his service; all of these things

brought so much comfort to us. A special thanks to Pastor Serena for

coming to the hospital to pray with us and assisting us in the days that

followed. To Carol Rice and everyone who helped provide the meal after

the service, everything was wonderful. The guests who are not

members of our church were amazed to see so much food and so many

people helping. Again, we thank you and we ask that you keep us in

your prayers as we cope with our loss.

HISTORICAL MARKER UNVEILING The Alden Historical Society extends an open invitation to the community for a brief ceremony celebrating the installation of an historical marker commemorating two events: the secession of the hamlet of Town Line from the Union of the United States, circa 1860’s, and Town Line’s rejoining the Union in 1946. The actual signing of the act of secession is believed to have occurred in the area near where the historical sign is located on the northeast corner of the intersection of Broadway and Town Line Rd. in Alden. The installation of the sign culminates a fundraising effort launched by the Historical Society subsequent to their September 2011 program detailing events and facts which lend credence to the likelihood of the secession event. The ceremony will be held on Saturday, September 7, at 2 PM, on the south lawn of the Town Line Lutheran Church. Town Line Lutheran Church has generously permitted the Alden Historical Society to place the sign on a boulder on their property. Persons interested in attending may park in the Town Line Church parking lot.
