Dear Friends,
I pray that this edition of the Tower finds you still enchanted by joy and wonder as we continue to
celebrate the birth of our Lord this Christmastide. I hope you will continue this celebration for the full
twelve days of this season and join us as we close it out with our Epiphany Pageant at 5:30 on January 6th.
I have now been here amongst you as your priest for a couple of months. I intentionally spent this time
settling in and getting a sense of this wonderful parish. As you may guess I arrived with a lot of memories
of St. John’s and I wanted to spend time coming to know St. John’s here and today, not St. John’s twenty
years ago as I remember it when I was in high school.
I know I will continue to come to know what St. John’s has become in the years since I left, but as we start
this new year I am ready to start acting, ready to move beyond settling in. Since the early time in my
priesthood I have created time each week where I essentially have office hours at a local coffee shop. This
has allowed me to come to know parishioners and have conversations that Sunday mornings don’t
usually allow for. So I am going to start this back up. Every Wednesday from 1-3 I will plan on being at
Coffee Depot in Warren for anyone to drop by and chat, for some or all of the time. Please note two things
about this, some weeks pastoral emergencies might take me away, so if you come and I’m not there please
try back again. And please visit me in the office if you have pastoral concerns, or are looking for uninter-
rupted or individual time. In these times other people may be coming and going and we are of course in a
very public setting.
I also would like to invite you all to join me in reading St. Paul’s Letter to the Romans this Epiphany sea-
son. The Good Book Club, www.goodbookclub.org, has drafted a schedule to read the letter through
beginning on the Monday following the Epiphany, January 7th, and ending on Shrove Tuesday, March 5th.
Beginning January 8th on Tuesday mornings from 11am-12pm we will have a Bible Study to accompany
this reading. Please come out to learn about and discuss this important piece of Holy Scripture.
Yours in Christ,
patrick+

5th Annual Chili Cook-Off
Please join us for our chili cook-off following the Annual Meeting on Sunday, January 27th. We will

recipes and vote for your favorite. There will be corn bread! There will be prizes!
The fee to enter your chili is $20. Simply bring your chili ready-to-serve in a crock pot or simi-
lar. We will provide table cloths, spoons, and bowls. Feel free to decorate! Tickets to vote are $5 for
10 tickets – the more you buy, the more you get to vote! Bring a canned good for TAP-In and get

Can You Help?
A small group of dedicated youth meets regularly to explore faith, scripture, prayer, liturgy, and other top-
ics through the lens of comics. We have made available a number of our individual comics for sale in the
past but are currently compiling about 5 years’ worth of work into a single volume. This spring the anthol-
ogy will be printed and bound. We estimate that the printing and shipping costs for 50 copies will be
roughly $250. We are looking for someone to underwrite our project so that the result of the spring release
party and sale will be pure profit. The proceeds will be split three ways, among the art team, the high
school mission trip, and Heifer International. If you can help please contact Heather at 245-4065 x 18 or

COMMISSION ON OUTREACH
The Giving Tree
Thanks to all for another incredibly successful year for our annual “Giving Tree”. I am so touched
as to the generosity and outpouring of support for this very important ministry that takes place at
this busy time of the year. Remembering and providing for those less fortunate than we are is what
truly is important during times of need, and our St. John’s “family” really stepped up to the plate.
On December 6th “ALL” the requested gifts (along with many extras) were delivered to the Women’s
Resource Center in Warren. Each family also received $100 in gift cards for their holiday meal.
These 3 families have now been blessed with a Christmas that would have been entirely different
without our help.
Along with this, checks totaling $1,400.00 were delivered to “Foster Forward” towards the purchase
of gift cards for TEENS living in Foster Care in Rhode Island. The agency is extremely grateful for
our continuing support and generosity of this vital program.
I wish you all a Happy and Blessed New Year and I thank God that I am a part of such a wonderful
and caring congregation.
