KIUA SPORTS

MS Girls Basketball The girls took third place, beating Senri-Osaka to finish on a winning note. This is the first tro-phy the girls' basketball team has won in 5 years. Marist won the tournament in front of their home crowd. MS Boys Soccer The boys played at CA and came in fourth place. Mr. Simoes was happy with how the team did overall. Though they would've liked to have finished higher, he felt it was good consid-ering the strong competition. HS Boys Soccer At the WJAA Nagoya tourney, the Flames downed CA jv 3-0, then battled St. Maur (Yokohama) coming just short 2-1. In the semi-final against M.C. Perry Samurai, Sean Osada. had many good saves. The match ended in a 0-0 draw. In the penalty kicks, Perry converted more, going through to the finals, 4-3. In a back-and-forth match for 3rd place, the Flames drew even with the Marist Bulldogs in the clos-ing minutes with a well-placed free-kick from Kaito. With a 3-3 stalemate at full time, penalty kicks were taken. This time, the Flames came out on top, 5-4. KIUA was the only team to hold champion Perry team scoreless during the tour-nament. Well done, players and coaches! HS Girls Futsal All the girls who took the opportunity enjoyed playing soccer and making fun memories to-gether, especially seniors Meg and Joanna. As it was the first time for many to play since middle school, everyone realized how fun futsal could be. We hope to see the girls give it a go next year too!

TOEFL PRIMARY

A new English proficiency test called the

TOEFL Primary has recently been made availa-

students. We will be administering this test to

make a good decision about how we may want

to use it in the future to check our students’

progress in English learning. Our students will

take the test during periods one and two (9:05-

10:40) on Thursday, April 9.

UNIVERSITY CORNER

DUAL ENROLLMENT PROVIDES HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH MORE OPPORTUNITIES!

Kyoto International University (KIU) Academy provides a quality and affordable international education for internationally-minded students grades 1 – 12. Qualified KIU Academy high school students, typically in their junior and senior year, may also choose to dual-enroll in rigorous college-level courses to build on their high school studies and to explore more deep-ly subjects of potential interest.

Beyond gaining knowledge, students have an opportunity to further develop essential life skills, such as effective communication, critical thinking and “win-win” problem solving.” Dual enrollment also allows students to gain confi-dence as they better know what to expect when they enter a college or university full-time. In some cases, students will be able to earn transferable college credit that will save both time and money for the student and their fami-ly.

Support for dual enrollment is gaining momentum around the world, particularly in the US where states are competing to get well-rounded, capable international students. The KIU or-ganization is eager and well-positioned to serve internationally-minded students interested in enrolling in post-secondary courses while in high school. In particular, KIU’s current Founda-tions Program (http://www.kyotoiu.ac.jp/en/05program/index.html), coupled with the Au-tumn 2015 launch of the University of London’s International Foundation Programme (http://www.kyotoiu.ac.jp/en/08London/index.html), prepares students to succeed in more advanced coursework in the future.

The Kyoto International University organization strives to be the recognized leader in quality bilingual education based on Christian principles. If you would like to learn more about KIU and the Foundations Program or International Foundation Programme, please visit us on the web or call 0774-64-0804.

We hope you have a wonderful new 2015 school year!
