Confirmation Sunday

On Sunday, June 7 – after a one-year hiatus – Hope Lutheran Church will again celebrate the confirmation of several young people. In the fall of 2013, we transitioned from a one-year Fam-ily Confirmation program (for Grade 8 students) to a two-year program (for Grade 7 and 8 stu-

dents) of studying the Bible one year and Luther’s Catechism the next. That meant that in September, 2013 we started students in both Grades 7 and 8 at the same time (and even one Grade 9 student), and it also meant that we did not have a Confirmation Sunday in 2014, as the students were only half-way through their studies. However, this year, the biggest class in Hope’s his-tory will publicly profess their faith in Jesus Christ on June 7. The 19 students will have completed their instruction in the Christian faith, and will stand before their families and the congregation to state their intention to follow Jesus their whole lives long. Those 19 students are: Albert Aracena, Sheyla Aracena, Christina Bassani, Julie Besler, Abbi Blackburn, Derick Blanes, Natalie

Fast, Hayley Galati, Connie Goetz, Kyle Granville, Jacob Granville, Zoe Koutsouropoulos, Stephanie Malmberg, Brendan Maruyama, Emily Messmer, Kevin Purdon, Bailey Schmidt, Blake Shular, and Donella Thompson. [Actually, Kyle and Jacob Gran-ville will be confirmed on May 31, due to a schedul-ing conflict.] Because it would take extraordinarily long on Confir-mation Day to have each confirmand share their faith by reading an essay, Marcus Todd will be put-ting together a video-audio montage that includes an excerpt from each student’s essay. We welcome these young people into communicant membership of our church and pray that they will continue to grow in their daily faith-walk with Jesus Christ.

Adam & Tuomisto Farewells

We will be losing two families this month. Pastor Jorma and Mary Tuomisto will be moving to Thun-der Bay, Ontario where Jorma will be serving the Finnish speaking Lutheran congregation. Luke (our High School Principal) and Dani and Charlie Adam will be moving to Stony Plain, Alberta where Luke will be taking over the family farm. We will dearly miss these two families as they leave Hope Luther-an. We will be having a special time after the 10:00 ser-vice on Sunday, June 14 to recognize the contribu-tions they have made to our church and school min-istry over the past few years. Please plan to join us.

Ladies’ Book Club

On Monday, June 29th, at 5:30 PM the Ladies’ Book Club will be winding up another year of inter-esting reading and discussion.

Deanna Hautz has once again graciously offered their home to host this Pot Luck celebration.

Church Work Bee—stay tuned for more information.

Wedding Congratulations

Congratulations to Sabrina Augus-tine and Trevor Tunn as they get married on Saturday, June 6. We pray God’s blessings on their mar-ried life together.

Ministry Wives Retreats a blessing!

Beautiful Camp Hope in Hope, BC was once again the site of the ABC District Ministry Wives Retreat for BC, April 24-26. Eleven women, plus Pastor Harry Haberstock, retreat chaplain, traveled in pour-ing rain, hail, snow, some getting lost by using the GPS, but they all arrived safe and sound! The group delved into God's Word to study three topics: resting in God's peace; being encouragers to each other as was Barnabas; and taking a leap of faith. There was laughter, there were tears, and there was a great amount of support and care. There was ample free time to enjoy the quiet beauty, to play games, to rest, or to visit and share stories. The women were blessed! The following weekend, May 1-3, fifteen women plus Pastor Harry gathered at the Canadian Lutheran Bible Institute (CLBI) in Camrose for the AB re-treat. The theme of "The Leaner Me" was very ca-pably led by Sandra Schaeffer of Edmonton. The women shared "weighty matters" that prevent them from living life to the full in Christ, and worked on strategies to help them become "leaner" in their walk with the Lord. Again there was laughter and tears, support and encouragement, worship and pray-er. There was time to relax with a huge jigsaw puz-zle, games and good food. The women were blessed! The Ministry Wives Committee encourages all con-gregations to support their clergy family, in order for the wife to attend the yearly retreat. She will discov-er new friends, and realize that she is not alone in her walk as a ministry wife. We are very grateful for congregations, including Hope, and individuals who financially supported the retreats this year - you have blessed us with your encouragement! Hope Lutheran School’s Presentation of the Musical, Annie Jr.

Mai and I were treated to wonderful event, thanks to Bruce and Judy Forrieter. We enjoyed front row seats at Hope Lutheran School’s presentation of An-nie, Jr. on May 14. Words such as wonderful, fan-tastic, and terrific do not begin to describe this pro-duction. I was amazed at the quality of the singing, acting and choreography that actors and actresses accomplished. I can’t say enough about how believ-

able everyone was as the character they portrayed. I didn’t see children trying to act. I saw actors and ac-tresses playing roles and every one was believable. The singing was also so good that I will be thinking of these tunes for a very long time. Every year I don’t think Hope Lutheran School productions can get better, but this was sensational . So thanks to all of you at the school for the best musical I have seen in a long time. I have seen quite a few, but this one ranks right up there as far as any professional musical I have seen at the Ford Center or at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. So to all the actors, ac-tresses, choir members, the set crew, lighting and sound crews, acting coaches, music director and all the teachers and principal, congratulations on the best show ever. To those people who didn’t see it you really missed the most wonderful show. Chica-go next year, anyone? Yours in Christ, Martin

60th Anniversary - “Giving God Glory”

The 60th Anniversary celebrations on May 17 were memorable, as hundreds of people assembled un-der the theme “Giving God Glory” based on Revela-tion 5:13. The weather was great, and volunteers had spent time earlier in the week beautifying the church yard, and then other volunteers came early on Sunday morning to set up tables and chairs. When the 10:00 Communion Service began, 218 people gathered to hear God’s Word and to receive the blessings of forgiveness in the Lord’s body and blood. Pastor Andrew Craig, a son of the congrega-tion, preached on the theme of “Home” and how God’s presence at Hope has given the sense of spir-itual home to him and many others. Andrew also presented a message for the children about the church (like our homes) being about the people ra-ther than the building. The Sunday School children, led by Mandy Gervais, sang a song. Current pastor, Laverne Hautz, presided over the service, which featured former pastor, Ron Towriss, reading Scrip-ture and Pastor Jorma Tuomisto leading the pray-ers. After that first service, chili lunch was served and people sat both inside and outside to enjoy fellow-ship. Displays and photos were on the gym walls and tours were available for those who wanted to see the various classrooms of the school. Lots of visiting and becoming reacquainted took place dur-ing those couple of hours. (continued on page 4)

(60th Anniversary continued from page 3)

By 3:00, another 139 people filled the sanctuary for the Anniversary Service. A formal processional pre-ceded the pastors, with Bernice Ulmer (charter member) bringing in the Christ Candle, Stephen Horton (member of 1995-96 Kindergarten class) bringing in the cross, Evan Reilly (current Sunday School student) bringing in the Bible, and Susan Eisner and Luke Adam (current principals) bringing in the banners. Former pastor Harry Ruf preached on Philippians 4 and talked about the joy of people and the praise of God that happens as we reflect on God’s goodness, grace and faithfulness over these last 60 years. Pastors Towriss and Tuomisto re-prised their morning roles of lector and pray-er, while Pastor Hautz presented a puppet show about reasons to give God glory for the children’s mes-sage (all those under 25 were invited to the front). Musicians and singers for the two services included: Carly Diack, Richard Gettle, Mike Goetz, Rachel Goetz, Brenda Horton, Kaitlyn Horton, Stephan Hor-ton, Carl Schmidt, Jeannine Schmidt, Teri-lyn Sudom, Chelsea Todd, Marcus Todd, Duncan Web-ster, and Liza White. We reprised an amended ver-sion of the Anniversary Hymn of Hope from the 50th Anniversary in 2005. Following the second service, worshipers enjoyed two special Anniversary cakes, along with coffee and other goodies. There are still some sou-venir booklets of the 60th Anniversary available. Please inquire at the church office. All in all it was a day of celebration of our great and glorious God.

“Pray for the Harvest” -- News from the 10

th

ABC District Convention Our Alberta-British Columbia District met in its 10th Convention at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church and School in Calgary from May 22 – 24, 2015. I was most privileged to attend as your elected Lay dele-gate for Hope Lutheran, along with Pastor Hautz. There were 151 voting delegates present. It was a time of hard work, lots of brainstorming, fellowship, sadness, encouragement, and LOTS of prayer (and we got NO coffee breaks, as we worked diligently

from 8 am through till 10 pm, stopping only briefly for meals!!). As most of you know, our District is currently in turmoil with the very sad demise of the Church Extension Fund, which has not only provid-ed churches in our District with financial assistance for building programs since the 1920's, but was a strong and reliable source of investment for its con-tributors. This situation is now in the courts, with a court-appointed monitor overseeing the financial restructuring of our District, as well as optimizing return of investments to contributors. As you might well imagine, this topic impacted every discussion, vote and decision we all made there. But the pres-ence of our Lord could be felt clearly throughout, and a sense of His loving hands holding us pervad-ed the proceedings, allowing all there to act with love and respect for one another even while some-times holding different opinions and thoughts on the matters at hand. I plan to give you lots of details about all the hap-penings at the Convention, so that you can feel well-informed about our District and Synod, and its min-istries and structure. This will be presented as monthly articles in your newsletter, but please feel free to talk with me personally at any time if you have specific questions, or want to see the conven-tion workbook (or my 23 pages of notes!). However, highlights include: 1. Probably most important is this – WE GET TO

KEEP OUR PASTOR!! The vote was extremely close, and took 4 ballots, but in the end Dr. Glenn Schaeffer was elected by a margin of only 4 votes, and 1 over majority!

2. Synod will be appointing an interim pastor as a “co-District President” to provide the spiritual support that we all will need during the tumultu-ous days of change ahead, and particularly to minister to those hurting from the CEF insolven-cy. The elected District President will initially be working with the team only on the corporate tasks & restructuring end of things.

3. A Restructuring Committee has already begun research into “what happened” to precipitate the CEF insolvency problem. I was impressed with their credentials, and how thorough they are be-ing. They will be presenting their recommenda-tions for restructuring our district in the near fu-ture. Synodical restructuring is also being ex-amined.

4. The CEF financials remain in the courts, with the next date for review by the magistrate being June 27th. I was also impressed with the straight-forwardness and knowledge of the court-

appointed monitor representative from Deloitte, and the Chief Restructuring Officers. They an-swered MANY questions from the floor clearly, thoroughly and honestly, as they are impartial to the situation. It was encouraging to hear that the judge in our case has been noted as stating that things are actually happening “at lightning speed” as compared to other situations like ours, which is great news for all the hurting in-vestors.

Again, I will be providing lots of detail about the en-tire convention in future issues of the Newsletter. But, please keep in your constant prayer : our new District officials, the pastors and congregations of our District, all those affected by the CEF disaster, and those helping to lead us to new ground in re-solving the serious issues facing us. Your servant in Christ, Brenda Horton, Lay Delegate

“Faith in Life” Award

On Friday, May 29, Concordia Lutheran Seminary in Edmonton conferred on Deanna Hautz the “Faith in Life” Award for 2015. For the last 2 years, Deanna has contributed hun-dreds of hours toward the establishment of a minis-try to and with pastors’ wives in the Alberta – British Columbia District. The Ministry Wives Committee came into being at the 2009 ABC District Convention. A Task Force created a visioning document which was presented to the Board for Parish & School Services in June 2012. The vision followed a pastor’s wife throughout the “life cycle” of seminary to parish life to post-parish life, and gave ideas for providing support and encouragement along the way. The Committee’s focus has been to create a network of support for ministry wives, and it has implemented a number of creative ways to help ministry wives connect with each other: Project Elizabeth (intentional networking, named

in honor of the relationship between Elizabeth and Mary)

Provincial Retreats (ministry wives gathering in both provinces to support and care for one an-other as they gather around God’s Word)

One-day Regional Retreats (bringing women together in smaller geographical areas)

Facebook Page (a private page to share ideas

and views as ministry wives) Conference Call Dialogues (on various topics) Prayer Requests (shared via email) Seminary Wives and the Widows (connecting

with and supporting our sisters in Christ from one end of the “life cycle” to the other)

Ministry wives lead a unique life, one with many joys, and also some challenges. The “Faith in Life” Award (presented originally on May 29) is being re-presented to Deanna on Sunday, May 31 with our appreciation for who she is and what she does as a good and faithful servant of our Lord Jesus Christ.

FELLOWSHIP REPORT

The fellowship committee had our last meeting on May 13, 2015. Due to poor participation it was decided to postpone our “Walk Down Memory Lane “fashion

show / high tea to a future date. Many people ap-proached us saying May was just too busy and they would love to see this scheduled at another date. On June 4th, the fellowship committee will be host-ing a dinner for 65 guests honouring the confirma-tion young people, their siblings and their parents. A golf and barbecue is planned for June 27th. Golf-ers will tee off at Eaglequest 9 Hole Golf Course in Coquitlam, followed by a barbecue at the home of the Fasts. Further information is coming. We continue to request that coffee and kitchen sup-plies be purchased through the fellowship commit-tee as we strive to keep costs in line and standards consistent. Once again we encourage suggestions and partici-pation by all, creating a fun, God-inspired Fellow-ship for all members of Hope. All members have graciously agreed to continue on our second term. God’s Blessings. Shirley Fast and Joyce Gillespie Chairpersons

YOUTH ARE . . . MARVEL-OUS !!

Youth Grades 7 – 12 have con-tinued meeting about every other week with an average attend-ance over April of about 14. Dur-ing this time we have enjoyed our time together doing things

like: playing a mysterious game called “Sandman” - involving a square and a ball (hmmmmm); taking advantage of the beautiful weather by competing in California Kickball across the street at McLean Park; and, best of all, a Progressive Dinner! We stuffed ourselves with appies at Linda Schiefke's, spaghetti main course at the Bergs', and finished off with donuts and ice cream cake at the Hortons'! As we then had to somehow “roll” our very full selves towards home, we were thankful that at least it was downhill! Many thanks to those who so generously donated their homes and prepared food for the pack of ravenous teens who attended! The most exciting news lately is that, not only is the Alberta-British Columbia District Youth Gathering at Trinity Western at the beginning of July officially a “go”, but we will have 11 youth and 2 leaders at-tending!!! The theme for the gathering is “MARVELous – Marvel in What God Has Done!”, based on Psalm 98:1a. It promises to be a time of life-changing fellowship, music , learning, and fun! Please continue to support our youth's fundraisers – those yummy hotdogs to get you through the Voter's Meetings, for example! But if hotdogs are not your “cup of tea”, you can still help with the small dona-tion of $20 – as a bonus, you will receive a discount card to use at local establishments. Best deal in town! You can see Marcus Todd or Brenda Horton about these, or visit the table set up in the narthex and manned by various youth. Here is what's coming up for the summer: MID-WEEK YOUTH NIGHTS EXTREME WATER WAR LOCK-IN AT ZION LUTHERAN (June 26) “MARVELOUS” DISTRICT YOUTH GATHERING (July 2 - 5) JR. TEEN CAMP AT CAMP LUTHER (July 19 – 24) SR.TEEN CAMP AT CAMP LUTHER (August 16 – 21) More information can be obtained from Marcus Todd regarding dates, times and cost! Hope to see you there! Brenda Horton, Co-Director of Board of Youth

Food Bank Fund

“ For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat.” Matt. 25:35.

Thanks to your faithful support of this Fund, we were again able to supply 2 shipments of potatoes dur-ing the month of May and thus pro-

vide a steady flow of this basic fresh food item to the needy in our neighbourhood. the Heppell’s Pota-to Farm continues to support our efforts by main-taining a low price of $8 per 50 lbs. bag.

The balance in the Hope Food Bank Fund has dropped to $663 as of May 25th, down from a start-ing balance of $1,449 at the beginning of this year. Our balance at this time last year stood at $1,215. Funds permitting, the Share Food Bank in Port Moody would again be looking for 2 deliveries of 1,600 lbs. each during June, namely on June 8th and June 22nd.

Here are the figures for the past 3 months:

Contributions Deliveries March $390 $512 April $600 $512 May $215 $512 (to May 25) Total deliveries for this year (to May 25th) amount to 16,000 lbs. of potatoes plus 115 lbs. of non-perishable food items from the Narthex.

As Summer approaches, let us hope that, like last year, we will manage again to maintain our uninter-rupted support of the Share Food Bank and its cli-ents in need.

“Jesus said, ‘the King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’” Matt. 25:40.

Yours gratefully,

Claus Schultz

Vacation Bible School… HELP!!

The theme for this year’s Vacation Bible School is “Everest – Conquering Challenges with God’s Mighty Power.” It is being scheduled earlier this summer – mornings during the week of July 6 – 10. With the 60th Anniversary and the District Conven-tion dominating our time recently, we have gotten off to a late start with plans! We will need HELP with things such as: crafts, games/recreation, snack preparation and clean-up, registration, and small group leadership. If you are available and willing to help out, please fill out the “Give Us A Hand” volunteer commitment form that you will find in your mailslot, or contact Marcus Todd or Pastor Laverne Hautz AS SOON AS POSSIBLE with your preference of service.

President-elect Addresses the A-BC District

Convention

On May 24,2015, in Calgary, the final day of the 2015 ABC District Convention, President Elect Glenn Schaeffer addressed delegates to formally respond to his election a day earlier. “I do not stand here today as a leader,” President Schaeffer said, quoting Leonard Sweet. “My funda-mental identity is this: ‘I am a follower. I’m a follower of Jesus Christ. I’m a servant of a Servant. For there really is only one leader in the Church.” “I pledge to lead by following,” President Schaeffer said, “by following the Leader, the Head of the Church: Jesus Christ.” President Schaeffer explained that, as recent as this past week, he had contemplated removing his name from the ballot. He said he understood that that some people might mistrust him because of his past involvement with District leadership, given the re-cent events facing the District.” He pledged to seek reconciliation with such people, and to work for the

healing of division. President Schaeffer said that the Church must be adaptable in these difficult times, noting that we must be grounded in the Word of God and focused on evangelism. He said he was looking forward to serving with all the newly elected board, as well as with the soon-to-be-appointed Interim Pastoral Leader. “I want to thank you for electing me to this office,” President Schaeffer said. “I thank you for your pray-ers and support. I look forward to serving you as your next district president—as a follower of Jesus Christ.” President Schaeffer will take office September 1.

Convention Essayist Rev. Nolan Astley, First Vice President of LCC, served as essayist for the convention, focusing on the idea of “The Praying Pilgrim.” Over two sessions he traced the teachings of Jesus on prayer, reflect-ing on how these teachings inform our own pilgrim-age of life. That does not mean we always make prayer the pri-ority we should, of course. “We don’t pray as often as we ought,” Vice President Astley noted, “and sometimes we just tire of the whole thing. But Jesus picks us up. He carries us along in our prayers… He doesn’t just teach you. He prays with you and for you.” The final day of convention opened with a commun-ion service celebrating Pentecost. The host congre-gation was Foothills Lutheran Church and Rev. Da-vid Bode preached and officiated. Assisting were LCC President Robert Bugbee, ABC District Presi-dent Donald Schiemann, ABC District President Elect Glenn Schaefer, and outgoing ABC District Third Vice President Craig Tufts. The day ended with a service of installation.
