CLASS HISTORY

Twelve years ago the Senior Class of "49" or some of it walked through

the doors of Cleveland School for the first time, and optimistically demanded

an education. Y/e were ready to strive to seek, to find and not to yield. Of

the seventy who entered the first grade in 1937, only three, James McDowell,

James Franklin London, and Monte Harris Hamilton have completed their entire

twelve years at Cleveland High School. The other seniors have joined this

Trio either in the Grades or in High School.

We started our High School career with an enrollment of twenty-seven

eager Freshmen, brimming with that naive self-assurance that only freshmen

possess. YVe were greatly assisted by Mr. Hoskins, our class advisor.

With Mr. W.M. Wooten as class advisor, the Sophomore year found us better

acquainted with high school rules and regulations and hard down to work. Some

of the group placed high on the football and basketball teams.

Our Junior year was a very successful one, with James Franklin London as

president and Miss. E.A.Enloe advisor, we gave the Seniors an elaborate Prom.

This, our last year in high school has proved to be our most important.

This is the year that we have looked forward to and dreamed about. Mr. R. L.

Garrett took over the wheel as Senior advisor, and Alphonso Young was selected

class president. Y/e had five boys on the basketball team, the whole class in

the dramatic club, and all the girls held positions in the glee club. The class

won the annual fall contest by turning over to the school $110. Selma Baker

was elected May '.iueen. Alphonso Herman Young with a total of 274 points and

Monte Harris Hamilton with 260 were the high sdorers on the basketball team.

We will always be greatful to our parents for providing us with the

opportunity to receive a high school education, and to our teachers for their

patience and consideration shown throughout the years we were with them. Our

faith in our homes and our school is the basis of the confidence with which

we face the future. Never shall we forget the tingling joyousness of this

conclusion of our happy schooldays at Cleveland. A time to keep. That is what

tonight is. To keep the memory of it forever and ever. And if better is the

end of a thing than the beginning thereof, what a glorious future awaits us

in the life that is so brightly commencing tonight.

CLASS WILL

We, the Senior Class of Cleveland High School of Shelby, of the County of

Cleveland and State of North Carolina about to pass out of this sphere of edu¬

cation in full possession of a crammed mind, well trained memory and almost

superhuman understanding do make this our last will and testament.

We bequeath to the dear faculty, who have been our instructors in all the

wisdom of the ages, a sweet and unbroken succession of restful nights and

peaceful dreams. It has been a hard strain on them, but they have all done

their duty and verily, now shall they have their well earned reward. To Cleve¬

land High School as a whole we leave our good discipline and behavior. To

Tommy Elmore, McKinley Gaines leaves his good disposition and his ability to

jive the fair sex. To Frank Borders, Monte Hamilton leaves his position as

center on the basketball team, and to Eujames Bennet his ability to blow the

trumpet. To Rufus Webb, James Franklin London leaves his ability to beat the

bass drum with the hope that he will use it well. To Pearl Crosby, Arlyss

Logan leaves her scholastic ability, and to Edna Webber her cuteness and

ability to sing in the Glee Club. To Louise Watson, Selma Baker leaves her

student teacher ability and her hair styles. To Glenn Keaton, James Edward

McDowell leaves his position as best dressed boy in school and his cooperative¬

ness. To Matthew Norwood, James Moore leaves his ability to write and speak

French. To Donnie Bell Word, Eleanor Thompson leaves her neatness. To Sadie

Phillips, Imogene Wilson leaves her sense of humor. To Matthew Burris,Alphonso

Young leaves his athletio ability, and to Talmadge Cline his ability to operate

the memeograph and movie machines.

Beside these enforced gifts we, leave not of necessity, but of our own

free will, our blessing tender memories, for our pleasant associations together

and our forgiveness for anything that we may not have exactly appreciated in

the demonstrations of the past and a pledge of friendship from henceforth and

forever. All of the rest and residue of our property whatsoever and whereso¬

ever of what nature, kind, and quality soever it may be and not herein disposed

of we bequeath to our principal for his use and benefit absolutely, and to be

disposed of for the good of the coming classes.

In witness where of, we the Class of 1949, the Testators have to this our

will written on this sheet and set our hands and seal this fourteenth day of

June, one thousand nine hundred and forty nine.
