The Three Elements of Karate

Although karate may be best known for its kicks, the martial art is actually comprised of three distinct components: Kihon, or basics; Kata, or forms; and Kumite, or sparring. Ronald Porzio, a longtime student of the sport, describes these elements in greater detail.

Kihon

Here, students practice fundamental skills such as stances, blocks, kicks, and punches. Through repetition, they learn the proper technique, while also increasing their concentration, balance, and stability.

Kata

Somewhat like a performance, a kata is made up of a set number of moves performed to create a shape, like an “I” or “T,” for example. Completed solo, all of the 26 Katas include a bow at the beginning and end.

Kumite

Taking Kata to the next level, Kumite applies the forms of Kata against an actual opponent. Sparring partners are permitted only light contact and take turns acting as the aggressor and defender.
