Lets start with some kind of déjà vu - experience
Electricity“on demand”
Then: Electricity available as centralized source.Ability to focus on own business rather than on generating energy to do business. The cost of managing energy infrastructure was reduced.
IT infrastructure“on premise”
Beginning of the information age. Necessary to build and manage own computing infrastructure.
Electricity “on premise”
Late 19th century.Necessary for organizations to supply their own energy.

Cloud – not only hype, but reality
59% of large enterprises indicatethat Cloud solutions are already used in their companies*
Further growth expected: 21% of the remaining respondents say that their companies plan to use Cloud solutions in the future
79% of the respondents consider Cloud Computing to be important for the business success of their companies.
Source: TNS Infratest Online Survey Q1 2012 on behalf of SAP with 601 respondents of large enterprises from US, UK, Germany and Brazil
There is no single way of adopting the Cloud, but the way seems to lead via Hybrid Clouds (currently lowest share of users, but highest potential)
Public Cloud*
Private Cloud*
Hybrid Cloud*
Already in use
Plan to use < 12 months
Don’t plan but consider
Don’t consider at all
Don’t know
Potential: 62%

What‘s the difference with cloud from a business perspective?
The garment: A custom-tailored suit
Fits perfectly
(almost) everything configurable (style, cloth, buttons)
Needs certain time to finally get it
More an investment than a bargain: You will use this forreally important events in your life!
The apparel:
Fits mostly okay
Standard sizes and configuration
Preproduced: You can pull it instantly out of the shelf
Relatively cheap: Good for many occasions…

…and what does it mean for OnPremise and OnDemand
The „on premise“: A custom-tailored solution
Tailored custom specific
(almost) everything configurable (screens, buttons…)
Needs certain time to finally have access
More an investment than a bargain: Customers will usethis for really important processes!
The cloud solution:
Standardized solution
One solution, few configuration options
Preproduced: You can have instant access
Relatively cheap: Good for many occasions…

The cloud stack consists out of three layers
Software as a Service (SaaS)
Access to solutions via a client (mainly an internet browser or mobile client) provided, main-tained and operated by the cloud service provider.
Platform as a Service (PaaS)
Develop applications in and deploy them in an environment the cloud service provider grants.
Infrastructure as a Service
(IaaS)
Access computing infrastructure (server, network, storage) to deploy any kind of application on it.

When to use „what cloud approach“
The own property:
OnPremise, Internal Private Cloud
For the most critical solutions with the highest requirements regards to reliability (stability, security and performance).
The rented apartment:
External Private cloud
For less critical solutions; major production use cases.
The hotel room:
Public cloud
Temporary use case, i.e. Test etc., non critical systems, i.e. legacy.
Watch data security!

What to take away
Cloud is an IT service model, not a technology.
Harmonization is the approach, virtualization thetechnology to enable cloud
You have different layers of cloud, besides SaaS(our OnDemand solutions) SAP offers solutions and services on PaaS and IaaS level. These are often “first steps of adoption” for or OnPremise customers.
The adoption of cloud has already begun. Hybrid isthe “to go” scenario, which requires to
• design a flexible architecture• setup a business capable IT organization• Implement the right set of solutions to holistically control
the hybrid OnDemand/OnPremise scenario
