So many things are New(s).

I t seems that just as each year is getting old, and the early days of December creep into our lives, we surround ourselves with new things just as the year comes to a close. New gifts beneath the tree, new resolutions for a new year, and those wonderful letters

that come with Holiday Cards that tell us all that is new(s) in the lives of our friends and family members. OK, so maybe you’re not a fan of those letters - but can you imagine trying to fit all the news from the Eta Chapter onto one sheet of paper? I mean, wow, I could be done in an hour, right? As much as I’d love to have spent the other 59 hours on another task (or twelve), there really has been a lot going on at Eta since our last (sold out) issue landed in your mailbox. And so, herein we present what’s new(s).

New President. New Officers. New Chairmen. New furnishings. New flooring. New members. New Brothers. New awards. New degrees. New...New...NEW! And then there’s the new(s) report about Homecoming - and a new(s) report from our House Mother. News...News...NEWS! This issue will certainly bring you up to date, and I hope it will compel some of our members to step forward and assist in the operations of our alumni association. We seem to have the “treasure” part down pat, and now we are searching for those who have some time - maybe just a little time - and talent that they would like to dedicate to the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa.

Let me know what you think - and, of course, enjoy the read.

Damn Proud,

The Secret to a Successful Tailgate

In case you wondered just how the Eta Alumni Association is able to put on such a detailed and organized event, we took a moment and consulted our Events Expert, and 2nd Vice President, John J.B. Wright, Esq. ‘82 on the secret of his success - he replied with two photos of his van (actually, his wife, Janie, owns the van) - thought we’d share, because this is what we mean when we say, “He’s got the Wright Stuff.”

It is with great honor and humility that I take office as President of the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa. Following in the footsteps of my recent predeces-sors, Brothers Jay Gobeil and Christopher Flood, as well as those of Presidents from decades past, I real-ize I have large shoes to fill in order to lead Eta dur-ing the next year. I have established a goal for my tenure as President: to create an elite fraternity at the University of Maryland. My plan to achieve this goal includes successful recruiting periods, a united brotherhood and executive board, and communica-tion between the executive board, active brothers and alumni. However, my job is made easy in com-parison to others on campus and around the nation, given the resources and support I receive from my brothers, both active and alumni.

The past two semesters, Spring and Fall of 2012, have evinced tremendous progress and tangible suc-cess for a chapter that received official recognition so recently. In the Spring, we didn’t just move into a Chapter House on the Row, but also had our largest recruiting class since recolonizing. Twenty-one brothers were initiated; with the new brethren and fantastic housing accommodations, excitement and momentum was on our side. This momentum car-ried through the Fall semester as we added eight new brothers. A major accomplishment was our Second Place finish in Overall Homecoming events. This award propelled Eta into successful brother-hood and social events throughout the semester. It is this excitement and momentum, breeding a strong brotherhood, which I believe will allow Eta to obtain its goal of becoming a top-notch fraternity at the University of Maryland.

The keystone in our recent success began with a simple change of address: from many dorms and apartments to that of a house on Fraternity Row. Or at least it seemed simple thanks to the Chapter’s executive board, our Alumni Association and Housing Corporation. The move into our new Chapter House at the start of the Spring semester ignited all our successes during the past calendar year. The Chapter House at #2 Fraternity Row

improved our recruit-ment substantially. Hav-ing such grand furniture and accommodations is a luxury in recruitment, especially when com-pared with the likes of most of the houses on the row. Our home is a palace and five-star liv-ing space with an 82” television set, custom designed pool table, kitchen-ette and customized, formal, study room. The Chap-ter House also promoted a greater spirit of brother-hood. Instead of brothers meeting maybe once or twice a week, our new house has created a central-ized place for brothers to eat, hang out, study and basically “do fraternity right.”

During the next year I will expand the role of communication between actives and alumni. Added events and enhanced communications, I believe, will be mutually beneficial for actives and alumni. The homecoming tailgate and spring open house are guaranteed to create good times for all who attend. Adding an event or two would lead to greater inter-action - and stories from today and from yesteryear always make for priceless interaction. Second, an improved media campaign will allow greater com-munication with all alumni, including those who cannot attend events, those from other chapters, and our national headquarters. The media campaign will include greater active participation in writing for The THIRD DEGREE and a greater commitment to promote our achievements and activities through resources including the Diamondback, our school newspaper, and the Signet, our national publication.

I’m looking forward to twelve months full of hard work and success. John Wright, from Burtonsville, Maryland, majors in Civil Engineering, was Co-Rush Chair and House Manager this past semester, and will serve the first of two semesters as Chapter President beginning in January of 2013.

From the Eta Alumni Chairman

J. Victor Alonso ‘13

The Fall of 2012 was another exciting semester for the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa. All of the brothers worked very hard to make it the most spe-cial semester we have ever had as a chapter, starting with recruitment. The Eta chapter took in eight new brothers. Without the help of Yaniv Stern and his committee members, none of these new brothers would have been brought into Phi Sigma Kappa. The new members include Justin Ohneiser, Frank Hackenburg, Danny Tatum, Brian Trainor, Jordan Washer, Dennis Tran, Austin Carroll and Joshua Bernstein. All of these men have integrated well with the brotherhood and contributed so much to the chapter already. They are the building blocks of our fraternity and will continue to help grow our chapter even larger this Spring. While there were many events that made for a great semester, the top of our list was Homecoming. Phi Sigma Kappa was paired with Alpha Chi Omega and Chi Phi to celebrate a week filled with awesome events. Not only was the matchup very exciting, but it also provided some notoriety for the fraternity. Phi Sig Kappa, Alpha Chi Omega and Chi Phi took second place during homecoming and it made for a perfect end to an amazing week. Thanks to our homecoming chair Keaton Pavier, the week turned out to be an incredible one that ended in a victory. This was Phi Sig’s greatest achievement in Home-coming and Greek Week competitions in more than ten years. This year Phi Sigma Kappa also helped host two philanthropic events with the sorority Delta Gamma. Twice during the semester we worked with Delta Gamma to host DG’s Grilled Cheese event. The proceeds of these events went to Delta Gamma’s philanthropy Service for Sight and they were a huge success. Over $350.00 worth of grilled cheese sand-wiches were sold and it was a fun event for every-one. Many brothers, including new brother Austin Carroll, were there to help out and make for a successful event. Thanks to the time and effort put in by our philanthropy chair the event was a huge success and helped further our efforts to become better known in the Greek community at the

University of Maryland. Of course, this semester was memorable be-cause of our Away Weekend in West Virginia. Doug Astler, Class of 2013, took a lot of time to put together an amazing week-end. In the end it was a huge success that provided just the opportunity for bonding amongst the brotherhood that we needed and one special weekend where everyone could just get away from the rigors and requirements of school and schoolwork. As alumni chair, I would like to thank the Executive Committee of the Eta Alumni Associa-tion and our Chapter Advisor, Chris McBeth, for helping to make this a wonderful and easy semester. If it were not for these six Brothers, none of this would have happened for Phi Sig. Sometimes it is easy to forget how it all started. Thanks to these men, and all the members of our alumni association, it was possible to be back on fraternity row at the University of Maryland. In closing, and on behalf of all our Brothers, I would like to thank everyone who has supported the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa and wish everyone a safe, prosperous and Happy New Year. Damn Proud.

J. Victor (“Vic”) Alonso, from Silver Spring, Maryland majors in Geographical Information Systems and will serve his third semester as Alumni Chairman of the Eta Chapter this Spring.

NEW Additions to the Eta Chapter TimelineNEW Additions to the Eta Chapter Timeline

In our last issue, we presented on several successive pages a timeline of milestones in the rebirth of the Eta Chapter, from its earliest days on the campus of the University of Maryland to their first semester on Fraternity Row. Those milestones were taken as excerpts from a history of the undergraduate effort as chronicled by Logan C. Miller ‘13, one of Eta’s Founding Fathers. As is often the case with a vibrant and growing organization, such information can become outdated just as soon as it is published. Such is the case with the timeline of the Eta Chapter. In rapid succession, the boys from #2 Fraternity Row pulled together three major milestones during the second half of 2012. First, as part of the 2012 Shonk Leadership School hosted by the International Head-quarters, the Eta Chapter was one of just five Phi Sig chapters to receive the coveted Herbert L. Brown Outstanding Chapter Award (shown at right). Second, Chapter Adviser Christopher McBeth was one of just five Brothers to be recognized as an Outstanding Chapter Adviser (see page 8 for details). As if those were not enough, Team Eta was paired with the women of Alpha Chi Omega for Homecoming 2012 - and pulled out a second place overall finish (trophy shown at right), raising their visibility, and their stock, on campus and within the Greek system at the University of Maryland. Now, the alumni association had a few milestones, too - but you’ll have to get way beyond this page to learn about those. For now, below are the three milestone additions for the Eta Chapter:

Outstanding Chapter In their first opportunity to be nominated, the Eta Chapter is just one of five selected as Chapter of the Year.

An Outstanding Adviser Chapter Adviser Christopher McBeth was one of just five Brothers to be recognized as an Outstanding Chapter Adviser.

Homecoming 2012 Paired with the women from Alpha Chi Omega, the Eta Chapter wins 2nd Place overall and raises their visibility on campus.

Chapter Adviser Wins Prestigious Award

In our last issue, we were able to share with you the news that Eta Chapter Adviser Chris McBeth ‘01 had been presented the 2012 Outstanding Chapter Adviser Award for the entire Maryland Greek System. Well, it seems that he’s gone and done it again. At the 2012 Shonk Leadership School hosted by the Interna-tional Headquarters, Chris was one of five Chapter Advisers in all of Phi Sigma Kappa to receive an Outstanding Chapter Adviser Award. Chris has served as the Chapter Advisor since shortly after the re-organization in 2009, and has distinguished himself with his leadership and commitment to the men of the Eta Chapter. Congratulations, Chris, on this terrific acknowledgement of your contributions to the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa.

The presence of Phi Sigma Kappa on Fraternity Row is a cherished Maryland tradition. Another, albeit newer, tradition is the painting of a sidewalk square in front of each house with a visual tied to the graphic identity of the occupants of that address. In fine fashion, Brother John L. P. Wright ‘15 (assisted by his sister, Annie, an alumni member of Alpha Delta Pi) painted this very striking and memorable square in front of #2 Fraternity Row. Despite the pressure of several onlookers (and one break taken to provide a visiting alum with a tour of the new house, Brother Wright and his sister have done us proud.

As a newcomer of Phi Sigma Kappa, I can easily say that this semester was my favorite one because of the experi-ences I had at this fraternity. After I chose to join the brotherhood because of the friendliness and the overall dedi-cation of all of the brothers, the Eta Chapter showed me what it truly meant to be a competitive force in the Greek community this semester by placing second during our homecoming week, while remaining focused and strong in our academics. From socials to athletic events to skits, we committed ourselves more than any other fraternity on campus, making my first Greek homecoming experience something that I will remember for the rest of my life.

Why I Joined: New Member of the Eta Chapter provides some insight into why he joined Maryland’s first fraternity.

Mandell Selected as Goldwater Scholarship Nominee

Noah Mandell ‘14 is just one of four students from the University of Maryland who were nominated for the Barry Goldwater Scholarship, a national scholarship for undergraduates who have outstanding potential and intend to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. As a nominee, he will compete in the spring to be one of up to 300 students selected nationally for the scholarship. The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was authorized by the United States Congress in 1986 to honor Senator Barry Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years of service in the U.S. Senate. The creation of this program pays tribute to the leadership, courage, and vision of Senator Goldwater and establishes in his name an endowed recognition program to foster and encourage excellence in science and mathematics. The purpose of the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation, as stated in the enabling legislation, is to alleviate a critical current and future shortage of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers. A more realistic statement of the purpose, in today's terms, is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified individuals to those fields of academic study and research. The Foundation is supported by the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Fund, which has been established in the Treasury of the United States. Funding for awards and administrative expenses derives from interest on the Trust Fund, invested in U.S. securities. The Foundation will award undergraduate scholarships to outstanding students, to be known as Barry Goldwater Scholars, in the spring of 2013 for use during the 2013–2014 academic year. The awards will be made on the basis of merit to two groups of students—those who will be college juniors and those who will be college seniors in the 2013–2014 academic year—who have outstanding potential and intend to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering.

Four-year institutions are eligible to nominate up to four students who are in the sophomore or junior class during the 2012–2013 academic year. To be considered, a student must be nominated by his or her college or university. Each scholarship covers eligible expenses for under-graduate tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to a maximum of $7,500 annually. The Trustees intend to award up to 300 Goldwater Scholarships. The number of scholarships to be awarded per state will depend on the number and qualifications of the nominees from the 50 states, the District of Colum-bia, Puerto Rico, and, considered as a single entity, Guam, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. As part of the application, Brother Mandell stated his career goals: Ph.D. in Physics. Conduct research in theoretical and computational plasma physics with direct applications to producing nuclear fusion. Mandell wants to understand turbulence in magnetized plasmas and investigate turbulence-driven instabilities that can limit the performance of magnetic confinement fusion devices. By developing computer simulations that utilize ever-improving computing resources such as graphics processors to produce complex yet efficient calculations, he will contribute to the design of nuclear fusion devices and make fusion a feasible sustainable energy resource.

Maryland Phi Sigs get new kitchen

UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND, 1897, Eta, 7 Fraternity Row, College Park, Md 20740, (301) 779-9603

The Brothers of Phi Sig of Eta Chapter have been keeping themselves busy since the start of the semester. There is only one word that can describe our actions here at Eta and that is motivation. Our motivation has been directed toward a general uplifting of the house physically. The Brothers have under-taken an enormous task, but our pride and spirit are helping us sail through the storm.

We are proud to announce the opening of a new modern kitchen that we have been boasting about for weeks. Due to the enor-mous efforts by Brother Richard Brown, the steward, who took upon himself most of the burden of its operation, the Brothers are com-ing constantly closer to each other by keeping in contact daily during meals. Rick employed an excellent cook who is keeping the Phi Sigs pretty healthy.

We installed new fire equipment and kept ourselves busy by polishing our fire escape. Brother Paul Miller the housemanager, has kept us on our toes and the general condition of the house is excellent. The Brothers here give special thanks to Russ O’Haver, treas-urer, for providing accurate books and advice on financial matters. Russ kept our budget balanced and our goals attainable.

We are also proud to announce a success-ful rush. Brother John Reagan, rush chairman, put his energies on target and we now have 18 associates due to his efforts. The associates are under the direction of Joseph Criscuoli, membership educator. William Smith, vice president, has kept Eta running smoothly by maintaining organization. He has the commit-tee chairmen organized and disciplined and he is one of our strongest assets.

Our organization and motivation has been directed toward several goals; an operating kitchen, a renovated house, and a strong bond among the Brothers. Dennis Phelan, presi-dent, has the tough job of keeping us directed toward these goals. Dennis has proven him-self an excellent leader. We all thank Dennis for his outstanding leadership, his pride in being a Phi Sig, and most of all for his total concern for all the Brothers here at Eta.

This semester will not be all work. Our social chairman, John Wright, will make sure of that. He has a crabfeast, 50’s dessert, mon-ster mash, western party and speak-easy planned with some of the prettiest and spirited sororities at Maryland.

5” x 8” VERSION - READY TO CUT-OUT AND FRAME The Executive Committee of the Eta Alumni Association is pleased to announce that a full-color version of the association logo has been unveiled. Our original logo was drawn by hand in 1994. The artist, Joe Criscuoli ‘82, used a traditional technical pen and indigo ink to create a logo that could be used to garner the interest of Eta Alumni in attending the 1997 Eta Centennial Celebration. John J. B. Wright, Esq. ‘82, then serving as President of the Eta Alumni Association, also served as Creative Director for the development of the logo. In 2010, when the alumni group was revitalized in support of the re-chartering of the Eta Chapter, Criscuoli reached back in time, scanned the old art and used it in the development of a number of communications projects. By contrast, this new logo exists in both black-and-white and full-color versions, and in a number of digital file formats. Our new logo was prepared with the help of a local professional computer illustrator who remarked, “This logo is one of the most intricate designs I have encountered in some time. It is striking in its combination of heraldic and fraternal icons and images that are readily associated with Maryland. It was a pleasure to work with Joe to create this \image and I hope you will be very proud to display it.”

Winter 2012 The THIRD DEGREE 21

Page 24: The THIRD DEGREE - Winter 2012

“LookBackatU” was the University of Maryland Homecoming theme for 2012. Featuring the Testudo mascot image used during each of the past six decades, the theme inspired us to remember who we were, who we are, and the changes we ex-perienced along the way to get here. This theme was also very appropriate for the celebration of the first UM Homecoming with Phi Sigma Kappa back on the Row. In true Phi Sig style the Homecoming Weekend kicked off on Friday evening with an unexpected, unforecasted, severe thunder storm. We could not have planned (or purchased) a better light show and Homecoming Reception at the Eta Chapter House went on as scheduled. Rain came down harder than spilled beer on a Friday night at the “Vous”, but the new house withstood the downpour tighter than a turtle shell and the jocularity was not dampened. The Actives were all pleased and excited to show off their new home and the improvements added since the Spring Open House. The new hardwood floors in the foyer and chapter room (formerly the living room) impressed all as they entered the House. 60’s alumni Cecil Given, Don Swann, and Claude Bogley were very impressed with the condi-tion of the House and the Actives they met.

Particularly noteworthy was the custom-covered pool table featuring the Cardinal Principles and the Triple T’s. But, the true master-piece of the first floor was the 8' x 4' Eta Family Tree on display in the 1st Floor hallway. Showing members, as well as their big and little brothers, the Family Tree allowed alumni to trace relations back to the 1950s. Growing and sprouting, the Tree blossomed right in front of us that night, as Alumni added the names of their big and little brothers, previously unknown, to the chart. The Homecoming Reception got into full swing in the basement. Featuring a spread of hot wings, Italian meats, cheeses and assorted snacks, it left no brother wanting. Music from all decades played

The View from the Pub Tables. Many alums will remember this area as the “Living Room” and with a pool table, comfortable seating, and an 82” TV, a lot of undergrad “living” certainly takes place in this part of our new house.

over the Chapter's new sound system (featuring speakers the size of a 60's jukebox). Conversations of days gone by, high jinx and "let me tell you what we did" filled the basement. Many of the conversations were sparked by the new composites on the walls, ringing the basement. Through the tireless efforts of Wayne Bethards, Claude Bogley, Jim Allen and many other Alumni, the Associa-tion was able to obtain per-sonal size composites for every Eta Chapter year from 1952 through 2002 (except 1954, ’72 and ’73 - if you have any of these, please contact us). These “personal size” composites were then enlarged, matted, framed and proudly dis-played in the new Chapter House. This demon-strated to the Actives, and Alumni alike, that there was an Eta fraternity here before all the fast food joints on Route 1 and, more importantly, showing that the actives were just as debonair back then as they are now. The new Chapter House's Basement got a good work out, hosting around 30 Alumni, 40 Actives and several guests of the University. One University guest was Bob Nichols, Assistant Director of the Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life in charge of Buildings (Fraternity Row and the Graham Cracker Houses). Bob noted how much we have done to improve the House and noted that in just under a year we have taken the House from one that, quite frankly, he would not have wanted to live in (although he was glad to rent it to us) to a House that is now a "Gem" among all Greek Houses. Two of the highlights of the evening fit the Home-coming theme like a "shell". Wayne Bethards, ‘59 and former President of Eta Chapter at #7 greeted and congratulated Active president-elect Johnny Wright, the first President of Eta Chapter to be elected in the new Chapter House. As they talked and met with new and old faces, they truly could look back, see where we have journeyed and where

Composites Abound. They start with 1952 and can be found on every floor in the house - here Todd Hoffman ‘82, Steve Baker ‘82, Jane Wright, Wayne Bethards ‘59 and Betty Bethards are “framed” against a backdrop of newly-hung composites that serve to link the past and the present in the new Eta Chapter House.

we are going. Likewise, the evening was sparked by the attendance of many of the Alumni from the Third Degree class of Spring 2012, the first initiation of Alumni since the colonization and re-chartering. Adam Elbaz, Zach Gorrell, Jay Gobeil, Ryan Kief, Jared Lindenberg, Jon Shover and Nathan Blaker were just a few of the new Alumnus returning for their first Homecoming. Seeing them interacting

with the Alumnus from former decades gave proof that we are truly an "ever growing throng". As the rain let up the conversations turned to the true essence of brotherhood and fraternity, leading each decade of Alumni to head to their watering hole of choice: the 50's to Ledo's, 60's to Town Hall; 70's and 80's to the 'Vous (yeah, its cleaner now and called The Cornerstone, but we know its humble roots); 90's to Bentley's and the Alumni of 2012 to the Barking Dog (I guess they are now old enough to drink?). To a man all were satisfied, ready for Homecoming Saturday, and, hopefully, better weather. Hope springs eternal, as does the spirit of our

Alumni, and great weather was had for Saturday's events. Following tradition, our third Annual Alumni Homecoming Tailgate, began with Alumni and Actives gathered in Lot 1 for pre-game festivities. Also following tradition, we once again broke re-cords for the number of attendees, reaching close to 150. The University Police and Campus Security have noted that if this continues they may have to

assign personnel to our tailgate to officially close off our section of the parking lot. It seems that once we start "rocking", traffic need not come "parking". Food, drink and good cheer were the mainstays of our Homecoming attack. Pulled Pork Bar-B-Q, Six Foot Subs, and sides galore were complimented by fresh baked cookies (provided by a new company started by a recent University of Maryland business graduate, mentored by one of our own Alumni, Harry Geller, '88). The best dressed Alumni award went out to several Brothers from the 60’s wearing their custom "Maryland ΦΣΚ" red hats. The Alumni Association

Hats Off to a Great Decade. Led by Claude Bogley and Cecil Given, the Brothers from the 60’s have been top supporters of the alumni renewal. The best-dressed award accessory, in the form of custom-made baseball caps was made possible by A. James “Jim” Comi ’68. This highly-sought accessory is modeled (above) by Jim Comi (a.k.a. “Oink”) ‘68, Cecil A. Given III ‘68, Ronald G. Rayne, Esq. ‘64, and Robert L. Wagner (a.k.a. “Wags”) ’64.

Executive Committee extends a Big, Brotherly "Thank You" to them for installing us as honorary members and presenting us with the ultimate in Phi Sig head gear. The best ride award went to Burt Mondonedo '85, who arrived in the same car he owned when he lived in #7, a beautifully maintained Blue 1976 Camaro. Bringing back memories, Burt also brought many photo albums showing the Chapter's escapades during the late 1970s and early 1980s. The highlight of the photos may have been the little sister shots (one of those girls closely resembles my wife). The "butterfinger" award goes to someone from the strongly represented 1980's contingent (including Rob Lamolinara, Dave Lamolinara, Chris Malone, , Eric Vinson, the Schwartz Brothers and/or Andrew Plenn). Even over the sounds of the tailgate, music and story swapping I heard one or two bottles drop to the blacktop, shatter, and thus lead to a moment of silence for a lost friend. Inspired by the brother-hood in present en masse and the fun that all were experiencing, the Schwartz Brothers (Louis ‘89 and David ‘91) raised the idea of holding an Eta Golf Outing in the near future. Anyone interested should contact your favorite local Alumni Association for more information and kick-start this concept. The "hair group" award, looking just shy of any self respecting 1970's rock group, goes to the Alumni of

the 1970s. Leading the way, Stephen Cooper and Jim Allen - followed up by Michael Boulavsky with the "Eastwood Dirty Harry". Todd Hoffman, John Wright, Steve Baker and Joe Criscuoli are still "holding their own". And, still hanging on, we are proud to be represented by Bill Walsh and Leon Boulavsky. And the "Not punctual, but always ready" award goes to "Point-me-to-the-beach" Russ O'Haver, who showed up, I think, right around the end of the fourth quarter. Like the company, your football team did not disappoint. Fighting hard the en-tire game, the Terps came from behind and had a chance to win in the last sec-onds only to come up short. Another Maryland Homecoming tradition? Let's

hope not. Homecoming 2012 certainly lived up to its theme LookBackat U. The weekend's events brought to-gether Eta Alumni and their families from all the decades represented by the Homecoming theme's ban-ner. We renewed friend-ships, made new friends and newer memories. We took a "Lookbackat" our past and the brothers that influenced our lives. We took a "Lookbackat" where we have traveled to get to who we are today. And we gathered with and celebrated the active Brothers and new Alumni who have made it possible for Eta to continue to make Homecoming memories and establish new traditions.

No Butterfingers Here?. Well, everyone in this photo seems to be holding tight to their bottles, and to each other...or are they holding each other up? Enjoying the Eta Alumni Tailgate are (left to right) Andrew J. Plenn ‘90, Chairman of the Eta Alumni Audit Committee Eric Vinson, ’86, David M. Schwartz ‘91, Patty McLane, and John P. McLane ‘88.

Captain Morgan? No. It’s William R. “Bill” Walsh ‘77 demonstrating the position of his left foot on Criscuoli’s

head during a Hell Week many decades ago.

Eta Alumni Association News

Earlier in this issue we told you that the Eta Chapter has received three prestigious awards from the International Headquarters of Phi Sigma Kappa. Brother Chris McBeth (recognized as Chapter Adviser of the Year) and the Eta Chapter (as Chapter of the Year) were the first two. We are pleased to share with you that your very own Eta Alumni Association completed this Triple Crown with an Alumni Club of the Year award. Congratulations to all the award-winners for their tireless efforts on behalf of the fraternity, and a tremendous thank-you to all our alumni members for your invaluable support.

Alumni Notes Did YOU Know? Brother George H. Buck ‘65 and his bride, Susan have four terrific children...but that’s not the whole story. The Buck children, all four of them, named Trevor, Tyler, Tiara, and Tawni, have names that begin with the letter “T” - George noted on his membership renewal document that his brood constituted the “4-T’s” - Hmm… this may bear some additional investigation New Alumni News Nathan Blaker '11 is the only one of the Founding Fathers to contribute to this issue of our magazine. He writes: “I am now finishing up my first year as a Sales Manager at an extreme growth store in Durham, NC. I graduated from our Robert H. Smith School of Business last December with a double major in Supply Chain Management and Marketing, and went into Macy's Executive Development Program. Working in management this year has been eye-opening. Getting work done through others is not something we practiced in classes, but its something my peers and I have to do every day. After being at Maryland for four years you get used to being around upwardly mobile, young, talented, intelligent, and driven people. Despite it being obvious, one surprise for me was that this is not necessarily the norm. Espe-cially the "young" thing. If you're still in college and reading this, please enjoy the wonderful views

everywhere a little extra for me. Anyway, running a retail business brings out the incredible impor-tance of being on time, respectful, and positive. Traits one might file under someone's "Character." Nothing makes a day worse than someone going around with a negative attitude. They also tell you in college that employers are mainly looking for strong com-munication skills. And its true. There are few things more frus-trating than people being on dif-ferent pages, and strong commu-nication practices keep a team moving forward efficiently and much more quickly. ANYWAY: enough ramblings of a nostalgic college grad, the real takeaway is this: all of what I do and where I am now can be traced back to my experiences building and running the Eta Chapter (remix) of Phi Sigma Kappa. All my broken bones have healed and I look forward to walking without a cane in the near future. I was truly humbled by the number of people who cared about me.”

About Brothers and Pins Here’s a great story about: “Lost Little Brothers and Lost Pins.” About 25 years ago I was a Re-gional Sales Manager with West-inghouse living in Connecticut. One of my large customers was MIMCO, a successful export electrical distributor in NY. In a meeting with the owner, Pete McDermott, he told me about his golf foursome that played regu-larly at his club in Long Island. A member of the foursome was Greg Barber who went to Mary-land, “Did I know him?” I told him that I knew a Greg Barber who was my little brother in Phi Sigma Kappa, and if it’s the same one tell him, “I want my pin back! And if he needs verification my initials are en-graved in it”.

He said, “What do you mean?” I told him that our fraternity tradi-tion was that when a pledge was activated, the big brother “pinned” their pin to the little brother at the initiation ceremony until the little brother’s pin came in from national. Following tradi-tion I did the same.

The problem was Greg used my pin to pin his honey, which at the time didn’t seem like a big deal until things started to get serious with my honey, Linda, a GW

Alumni Notes (cont. from Page 31) Kappa…. and… I didn’t have a pin to pin her with. For some rea-son, now lost in recollection, I didn’t go back to Greg and get the pin back and pin Linda.

We all graduated, Linda and I were married, and I never got my pin back. However, from time to time Linda would tease me with, “You didn’t even pin me!” on and off for the next 20 years and, to no avail, I tried to track down Greg until Pete brought up his name.

Fast forward: I wrote the order,

left the meeting with Pete, and actually thought nothing more about it. Several months later Pete called me and said that he and his wife would like to take Linda and I to his Country Club on Long Island for dinner. We graciously accepted. As wine was being served, a third gentle-man joined us, and got down on one knee as my long-lost little brother Greg Barber pinned Linda with my pin.

Apparently he never told his honey it was my pin and for some

reason he wouldn’t get it back from her even when he presuma-bly got his from national. They were married and 20-some years later because of Pete’s badgering on the golf course, Greg fessed up to his wife, she then got it out of the lock box, and sure enough my initials were engraved on the back.

So…. After 20 years of suffering the “slings and arrows” over my lost pin, I finally pinned Linda… or, to be more accurate, Greg did for me. As they say: All’s well that ends well. Well, at least on my end… I understand it was a traumatic experience in the Bar-ber family to convince his wife to part with it. J. Robert Manuel III ’65

T he five members of the Executive Committee of the Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa have been officially recognized as Appointed Officers of the Grand Chapter, and have each been

elevated to the Fourth Degree of Membership in the fraternity. In a ceremony held at the Chapter House on December 10th, Grand President William D. Neugebauer conferred Fourth Degree status on Secretary Todd B. Hoffman ‘82, Treasurer Peter J. Della-Croce ‘99, Second Vice President John J. B. Wright, Esq. ‘82, First Vice President Wayne H. Bethards ‘59, and President Joseph E. Criscuoli ‘82. Neugebauer (‘67, Indiana University of Pennsylvania) was accompanied by Linda, his wife (and member of Alpha Phi) on his first visit to the Eta Chapter; just weeks after assuming his new role as Grand President. Prior to the Chapter Meeting, Bill and Linda were treated to dinner with the Executive Committee at that famous Maryland tradition: Ledo’s. And even though Linda and Criscuoli almost fled the restaurant to chase after the lights and sirens of a large number of fire trucks, the Grand President was able to keep all attendees in place as he revealed his intentions for the five Eta Alumni Executives. The members of the Executive Committee provided the Neugebauer’s with a guided tour of the new chapter house. Where the members of the Executive Committee were surprised by Brother Neugebauer’s dinner announcement, the Neugebauer’s were truly impressed with the décor and many enhancements that have been made to our new home. Our Grand President was also very complimentary about the character of the members of the active chapter and remarked favorably on the conduct of the meeting and of our rituals. Citing the effective revitalization of our Alumni Association, the continued leadership of Eta in the number of Sustaining Members of the Grand Chapter, and the tremendous response of Eta Alumni in both membership donations and support for the “Six Columns Fund,” Neugebauer conducted the solemn ritual and presented the medallions signifying the Fourth Degree of Membership in the fraternity to the five members of “the most dangerous Alumni Executive Committee in the land.”

W hen Heidi Biffl, Housing Coordina-tor for the University of Maryland Department of Fraternity and Soror-ity Life, first informed me of the

Residential Fellow position, she plunged right in, saying: “Well, I’m not gonna lie to you, Katherine: the job requires you to live with a fraternity.” When I heard those words, I had literally no idea what to expect. I don’t have any brothers and my relation-ship with my one male cousin growing up included chasing him around the house trying to give him hugs. Clearly I’m no expert. The quick move-in of the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa to #2 Fraternity Row gave me little to no time to mentally prepare for the transition. I had next to no knowledge of the fraternity, ei-ther nationally or at Maryland. However, I almost preferred it that way. Instead of spending time worry-ing over how I would get along with the new set of men, I was able to jump right in and tackle this re-sponsibility in the moment. Thankfully, the first residents were a welcoming bunch that gave me little to no trouble, weren’t weirded out when I ate lunch with them, and didn’t shy away from conversations. I was immediately impressed by their clearly close brotherhood and deep connection to their alumni. They seemed to actually understand the importance of school, which was honestly quite refreshing. Plus, the men im-pressed me with their singing skills (and Joe and

Cameron’s ability to wear a sweater vest well) when they provided me with one of my favorite moments in life so far: a birthday serenade with a gift of “one free foot massage.” I usually receive either two comments about my House Director job: “The house directors in my day were much older than you” or “So what is it that you do, again?” What do I do? Well, the official job description states we are managers of the facilities. However, when you find yourself suddenly living amongst thirty college-aged men, it’s hard not to get

involved in their lives, whether it be through giving them relation-ship advice, asking how their classes are going, or just looking at pictures of cute ani-mals at lunch (yes, I’m thinking of you, Joe Keenan). Before I came to Maryland, I taught college English at a mid-size Missouri uni-versity. Through this, I realized how much I loved working with college students. Once you were no longer one yourself, it be-came much easier to appreciate the ups and downs of college life

from a distance. When you’re in the thick of it, it’s hard to see yourself as other than just a “college stu-dent.” But, as an observer, you realize how amazing these same students are: many already know what they’re passionate about, others are completely dedicated to their schoolwork and chosen major, others would do anything to help out a brother in

need. I’ve seen brothers work tirelessly to raise money for different campaigns, study together in the basement for hours, share adulations of love (yes, I hear those), decorate a Christmas tree, even dress themselves in fancy suits when need be—and do their own laundry! But seriously, they represent one of the tightest brotherhoods I’ve ever seen. Of course, it’s so much more than that. Instead of describing a normal day in the house, I’m going to share some of my favorite moments with the guys. Because, truth be told, a normal day in the house is pretty…well, normal. The guys eat lunch together, play FIFA soccer matches on the XBOX in the chapter room, sit in the study room for hours, yell obscure things at each other from different parts of the house, discuss weekend plans, play pranks on each other (Allen always ends up finding the honey mustard anyway), play football outside in hurri-cane weather, complain about the loud construction work out-side our house, eat dinner to-gether, watch the movie “Anchorman” about 1,000 times on the big TV, and go to sleep at…some point. I’m actually fuzzy on whether some of them actually sleep at all. Occasionally we have a urinal that leaks all the way to the basement laundry room or lights that won’t turn on, but nothing that can’t be handled in a day’s work. Favorite Moments from the PSK House Mom: Our dry erase board editors. The level of creativity

in the message alterations varies. Best so far? Instead of reading “Carmen is missing some of her cereal containers. If you have them, please return them to the basement,” which was the original message I posted, the edit read, “Carmen is missing. If you have her, please

return to her the basement.”

Being asked “Are you going to the rodeo” when seen wearing a blue jean button-down and brown boots. It was raining outside!

First, being told my free Obama sticker would not

go over well in the house, only to have the back-ing removed from it and stuck to the composite outside my door. I guess it looked better there?

Receiving frantic text messages in class when the

alarm system started beeping uncontrollably. My favorite? “Katherine save us from this plague!”

Receiving a picture message of Joe pretending to

move a box that had written on it “DO NOT TOUCH.” The increasingly high amount of SnapChats I receive. My favorite? Definitely “Helicopter Head” from Keaton Pavier. For Halloween, I put candy and little fake mice in their mail-boxes. The mice were soon all over the house—they travel well—including the high ceil-

ing above the staircase. Turns out they stick to walls well too. I was hoping we could test how long they would stay there before falling, but a few brothers decided to bring them down by throwing pillows at the ceiling until the mice fell.

A few weeks after the brothers moved in for the

spring semester, I knew that things were going well for us when I asked a few of them, “Are you going to class?” and one responded (cough, Rosh, cough), “No, we’re just walking around with our backpacks on.”

The many awkward encounters I’ve had either entering or exiting their bathrooms to check out

a facility problem. I always knock first but sometimes it just doesn’t work….

Not Your Fathers House Mother (continued from Page 40)

The brothers haven’t engaged in this activity this fall, but I loved “Chick Flick Night.” When is that going to be reinstated? A few of the men watch Giada’s cooking show fairly often. Is that considered the same?

All of the strange noises that Cameron makes. When Joe got us all addicted to the phone game

“Hill Climb” and we spent half our lunches playing the game instead of talking to each other.

Zach throwing-up outside my door and redeeming

himself via flowers the next day. The many times I’ve been asked to go on Away

Weekend. I’m flattered, guys, really. DJ leaving a note for the Fire Marshall that read:

“Mark room as passing fire inspection. Do not enter.” This was right before I left for a wedding weekend, and returned to find another note: “Sorry if house burns down while you’re gone.” I’m glad it didn’t, because otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to see that message.

At lunch one day, I was talking to one of the broth-ers about my classes. Cameron looked at me and asked, “How old are you, Kat?” When I re-sponded “25” he immediately said “Oh, that young.” He tried to dig himself out of the hole he had created for himself, but it was too late: he was shocked that I was “only” 25! Luckily, his intentions were good: he assumed older because of the amount of time I had spent in school up to that point. Hopefully not for any other reason….

These are just a few of my favorite moments. There are many more, as they are constantly doing things that amuse me, and themselves as well, I figure. In my first year living with the Eta chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa, I’ve learned that the way to enjoy this job is not to sweat the small concerns—like leaking faucets, running toilets, broken refrigerators, and other day-to-day concerns—but to enjoy the moment. And, as a House Mom, there are many of those moments to enjoy.

Luckily DJ didn’t actually let the house burn down.

DJ attempts to find ways to evade the room-by-room fire inspections.

Chapter Eternal

The Executive Committee regrets to report that the following Brothers of Eta Chapter have entered the Chapter Eternal since the publication of the last issue of The THIRD DEGREE, and ask that you join us in

prayers for our departed Brothers and their families.

Jared J. “Jed” Collard Eta Class of 1955 June 8, 1932 – August 27, 2012

Jared Jules "Jed" Collard passed away Aug. 27, 2012, at the age of 80 at the Cumberland Medical Center in Crossville, Tennessee.

A memorial service was held on October 7 and an Honor Guard provided Full Military Honors. Jed had moved to Crossville following his retirement from Alumni Services at the University of Maryland in College Park. Prior to his service with the University, Jed had retired from Foreign Service with the Federal Government. Jed earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Pre-Law from the University of Maryland in 1955. In addition to his activities with the Eta Chapter, he sang with the Men's Glee Club and with the Chapel Choir.

Possessing a range of nearly three octaves, Jed's professional musical career was launched in 1970 when he was summoned from the chorus to replace the ailing bass soloist in a concert at Carnegie Hall. He performed nationally and internationally in Don Giovanni, The Magic Flute, Carmen, The Barber of Seville, Cosi fan tutte, La traviata, Aida, The Tele-phone, Amahl and the Night Visitors, Help, Help, the Globbolinks, Macbeth and Bamboo. He appeared with the Washington Opera as a featured soloist in Il Guarany, Dona Francesquita, Elektra and The Ballad of Baby Doe. He also appeared professionally in the choruses of more than thirty operas.

Jed's concert repertoire included Bach's St. Matthew and St. John Passion, Handel's Messiah, Verdi's Requiem, Rossini's Petite Messa Solennelle, Berlioz' L 'Enfance du Christ, Faure's Requiem, Beethoven's Choral Fanta-sia, Dubois' Seven Last Words of Christ, Mendelssohn's Elijah, and Dvorak's Stabat Mater, among others. He was equally at home on the musical stage where his leading roles included The Merry Widow, The Red Mill, The Red Shoes, The New Moon, Kismet, and La vie Parisienne.

An active supporter of Phi Sigma Kappa alumni activities, Jed was a member of the group that organized reunions for the Eta Alumni of the 1950's and 1960's that were held in Columbia, MD, in 2002 and 2004. He used his knowledge of the University to plan and coordinate guided tours of the College Park campus that were highlights of both reunions. Jed arranged for UMD shuttle buses to pick up participants at our reunion hotel, provide tour transportation and return to the hotel.

He is survived by his wife, Shelley Hankins Collard; step-son, Shane Hankins; daughters, Kathy Kuper and husband, Dave, and Sue Larson and husband, Bill; grandchildren, Colton, Amanda and Jenny; two great-grandchildren; and brother, Craig Collard. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard Willard and Frances Amber Fessenden Collard.

James J. “Jim” Hill Eta Class of 1961 January 11. 1939 – September 8, 2012

Jim Hill left us Sunday, September 8, 2012, in Hayden, Idaho. He leaves behind his loving wife of 46 years, Geri, his son of whom he was immensely proud, L/Cpl Justin Hill, USMC and daughter Stephanie. Burial with Full Military Honors followed a Memorial Mass on September 17, 2012. Jim was born in Oklahoma and grew up in the DC/Maryland area. He attended the University of Maryland, graduating with a bachelor of arts degree in 1961. Jim completed the Marine Aviation Platoon Leaders Course while in college and upon graduation was commissioned a Second Lieutenant. Eighteen months later he received his wings of gold at the naval flight training command in Pensacola, Florida, and was assigned to an operational squadron at Marine Corps Air Station, El Toro. He completed familiarization in the F-4 Phantom and was then sent to the “Top Gun School” at Naval Air Station, Miramar. In 1965 Jim’s squadron deployed to Viet Nam, where Jim received five Air Medals for conspicuous gallantry in flight. Each of the citations recites his bravery in willingness to close with the enemy and engage at perilously close range. At the conclusion of his tour, Jim left active duty but remained a member of the Marine Corps Reserve, where he flew Phantoms and subsequently the OV-10 Bronco. Major Hill became a civilian in 1971 after ten years of service to his country. In 1967 Jim joined American Airlines, where he would pilot almost every aircraft in its inventory. His career led him and Geri to live in New York, back to California, then to Virginia and the District of Columbia, and finally back to California. He retired as a DC-10 captain, flying American’s route from California to Japan. After he retired, Jim and Geri moved to North Idaho, where every day he marveled at the beauty of Hayden Lake. The greatest love of his life was his family. But close behind came his love of literature and music. He surrounded himself with his books, all of which indicate that they were well read. He would either have a book in his hands, or those hands would be wrapped around his guitar or banjo as he sang from his amazing memory of country and western songs. Jim’s music delighted his family and friends; the library of his mem-ory continually amazed. While a student at Maryland, Jim traveled through Appalachia studying the country music which played such a part of his life; he played with Flatt and Scrugs in DC – he was so very talented. Jim was a central figure in college life for so many Eta brothers and other Maryland students. He taught us that it was OK to just go ahead and sing - even country music and old classics with colorfully modified lyrics. Jim will be remembered not only for leading the songfests, but as a friend to all. He will be sorely missed.

February 26, 1930 – September 26, 2012

Brother Jack MacArthur, Eta ’52, born February 26, 1930, passed away and joined our Chapter Eternal on September 26, 2012. A Maryland AFROTC graduate, Jack entered Air Force pilot training as a commissioned officer. Af-ter receiving his pilot’s wings, Jack amassed thousands of hours of flying time, earning him Senior Pilot’s wings and later, those of a Command Pilot. Most of those flying hours were as pilot-in-command of heavy multi-engine cargo and troop carrier aircraft including the C-124, C-131, and the C-5A “Galaxy,” one of the largest aircraft ever built. Jack leaves behind his wife of 56 years, Joan Carroll MacArthur, and their two sons, John Cawley MacArthur, III and Steven Grant MacArthur. Their daughter, Jeanne Carroll MacArthur, preceded Jack in death. I remember Jack as a particularly nice, easy-going guy, except for one instance on one day. On that day, presumably for insubordination, President Harry Truman had just relieved 5-star General Douglas MacArthur from his position of senior commander of all allied forces in Korea during the war with North Korea. Jack’s anger was so profound that one would conclude that a member of Jack’s immediate family had just been busted. Major Jack MacArthur was buried at Arlington National Cemetery with Full Military Honors on January 9, 2013. I join his Eta Chapter Brothers in mourning his passing, but in heartfelt appreciation for his time with us.

Edward R. Pierce, Jr. Eta Class of 1944 January 24, 1923 – April 3, 2012 Edward R. Pierce, Jr., 89, of Spring Garden Township, PA, died April 3, 2012, at Rest Haven-York. He was the husband of Mary F. (Smith) Pierce. Born January 24, 1923, in Washington, D.C., Edward was a son of the late Edward R. and Blanche E. (Carroll) Pierce.

He was a graduate of the University of Maryland, where he received his B.S. from the College of Engineering and was elected to the Maryland Beta Chapter of Tau Beta Pi Honorary Engineering Fraternity. In addition to his membership in Tau Beta Pi and Phi Sigma Kappa, he was active in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Advanced ROTC (2nd Lieut.) Signal Corps and the Old Line Advertising Staff.

A Professional Engineer, he was retired as Director of Field Operations for York International. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of York and served in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII.

In addition to his wife of nearly 39 years, Brother Pierce is survived by a son, Charles R. "Chuck" Pierce of Wellesley, Massachusetts; a daughter, Barbara Pierce of Sarasota, Florida; four stepsons, Donald B. Srygley of Nashville, Tennessee, William G. Srygley of Cambridge, N.Y., John R. Srygley of Baltimore, Maryland, and Robert B. Srygley of Sidney, Montana; a stepdaughter, Carolyn Srygley-Moore of Boston Spa, New York; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on April 13, 2012, followed by burial in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens with military rites presented by the York County Veterans Honor Guard.

December 2, 1928 – July 26, 2012

A SON'S REMEMBRANCE Francis Peter "Cappy" Zurmuhlen, 83, died peacefully in his home on July 26, 2012, after a short battle with cancer. A member of the United States Air Force ROTC, Cappy graduated from the University of Maryland in 1953 with a B.S. in Agriculture and as a brother of his beloved Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa. He was especially proud of his involvement, with Brothers Starnes, Tobin, and Franklin, in the capture of the Navy mascot, as detailed in the inaugural edition of this magazine.

Cappy began his flight training with the U. S. Air Force in 1953. After being discharged from the USAF in 1956, he was hired by Capital Airlines. He joined United Airlines in 1961 following the merger of Capital and United. In 1989 he retired as a Captain flying the DC-10, thus ending a career lasting 36 years.

Cappy, always a loving, gentle, and dedicated family man, remains our mentor and is forever in our hearts and, as always, our hero. He was always happiest when he was able to bring the family together for gatherings but no doubt enjoyed as much every moment shared with any one of us.

In his retirement years he continued to pursue his passion for sailing the Chesapeake and flying in his family-owned, technically-advanced Cirrus SR22 aircraft. On March 17, 2012, he was recognized by the Federal Aviation Administration and awarded The Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award in appreciation for his more than fifty consecutive years of accident and incident-free flying, his dedicated service record, technical expertise, professionalism and his many outstanding contributions that advanced the cause of aviation safety.

Cappy has now Flown West and is reunited with his wife, Gloria, as they continue their forty-eight-year mar-riage. Cappy touched so many people during his life, including his eight children and their families, six grandchildren and two brothers who survive him.

By love our departed are remembered, and in our memories they live. Treasure the thought that life lived with so much love never really ends but goes on forever in the hearts of those who remember.

Rest in peace, “Cappy”. We will remember you always. - Mark J. Zurmuhlen, H’11 A PHI SIG BROTHER'S TRIBUTE It was with profound regret that I learned of the death of Brother Francis P. "Frank" Zurmuhlen. Frank and I were of the same pledge class in the fall of 1950, were the best of friends throughout college and have remained close during the 62 years since we first met. In fact, Frank was a fellow member of the intrepid four-man Phi Sig raiding party that successfully kidnapped the goat mascot from the U.S. Naval Academy prior to the Maryland-Navy football game in October of 1952. Strong as an ox, Frank carried the goat on his shoulders as we ran for the getaway car.

I will forever remember Frank as a capable, enthusiastic, fun guy who was devoted to his family and who remained true to and supportive of his fraternity to the end. I shall miss him as I know will all those privileged to have been associated with him in some phase of his time on earth.

W e have been asked several times, over the last few months, what has made the revitalization of the Eta Alumni Association so very success-

ful in so short a period of time. Each and every time we have pointed to the volunteers - those who have stepped forward to recruit, fundraise, and spread the word that our Brotherhood is not “just a college thing” but, rather, that we are Brothers for life. Having tasted success, we would be remiss if we did not tell you that we’d like the “hits to keep on coming.” But, you know as well as we do, that just five guys cannot continue to run this circus. It is time for our members to share just a little bit of their time, and step up to the plate, wave a flag, and lend a hand. We’re asking you, straight-up, to review the activities listed below and let us know where you can step in for just a few hours and keep our group vital, relevant, and growing. Here’s our “wish list”:

Be sure that your Big Brother is a Member and that your Little Brother(s) is (are) Members by contacting them directly.

During the next sixty days we will be looking to you, our members, to help us determine the answer to “Well, what’s next?” For certain, the number of Brothers who now step forward to volunteer to help us will, in part, provide some of the answers. We hope you will share with us your vision, desires, and hopes for our association. Thank you for the votes of confidence you have provided to-date, and for your anticipated and, we hope, continuing and expanding support. Damn Proud,

With your generous gift to the Six Columns Fund:

...you help to create a legacy of having helped to put the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa back onto Fraternity Row.

...you help to create a “Castle on the Row,” to create a home you’ll be proud to visit, and an asset that will enable the active chapter to compete for the top new recruits at the University of Maryland.

...you help to create a chapter house where actives, alumni, parents and prospective members walk through the “Six Columns” in front of #2 Fraternity Row and experience the legacy of Maryland’s oldest, and finest, fraternity.

It’s time to do more than read about our new chapter house...it’s time to become a part of it. And it’s a whole lot easier than piloting the Space Shuttle.
