Reflection on HatchetThe author showed how with little imagination a young teenage boy can take care of himself in the wilderness. It hard to think how Brian felt when the pilot died and he had to fly the airplane until he crashed it.

My church youth group went on a camping trip and one of the kids got sick with a rash from poison ivy or something. This is not as bad as Brian was when he ate a lot of choke berries. The story would not have been as suspenseful if Brian had found the survival kit earlier.
