I know it’s repetition but again we are absolutely amazed at the generosity of the good folk in Giffnock
South. The Glasgow Care Foundation, Lodging House Mission and the Salvation Army are just three of
the beneficiaries mentioned in these pages, but the Cupboard in Gorbals gets regularly filled and there
was the huge response (over £2000) when Catherine sought sponsors when she (rashly we thought)
agreed to take part in the sleepover at Edinburgh in December (and the coldest night too). So well
done again you generous Giffnock Southers and well done Catherine and Laura. Ed

Dear Friends,
Lent begins this year with Ash Wednesday on February 14th. The season begins as the landscape around us begins to wake up to Spring. Lent is a time of reflection, and it is a time of growth for us as it is a time of growth in the gardens, fields and hedgerows that have had a wet and mild winter(!). The weeks of Lent give us the opportunity to take stock of the direction of our lives, we might “give something up for Lent”, but equally we might do something more. Lent is not a retreat from the challenges of the world we live in; it is a time when we could put aside our preoccupations for a while so that
we might grow in understanding, giving ourselves space to consider the part we play in the complex
affairs of this fragile planet.
Open our hearts
That we may feel the breath and play of your Spirit,
Unclench our hands
That we may reach out to one another in openness and generosity,
Free our lips
That we may speak for those whose voices are not heard,
Unblock our ears
To hear the cries of the broken-hearted,
And open our eyes
To see Christ in friend and stranger,
That in sharing our love and pain,
Our poverty and prosperity,
We may move towards that peace and justice which comes from you
And so find ourselves in your divine reconciliation.
(Christian Aid prayer)
Jesus went into the desert to begin his new life, he was tested there, and grew into the person who leads us and teaches us how to live this Lent, and always, as active and faithful citizens in his Kingdom.
Beginning on 16th March every Friday at 10.45am throughout the season of Lent, Giffnock South will be open for a short Lenten Service followed by tea and coffee. All are invited to come and will be made most welcome.
With every blessing
Cstherine
TEXT OF THE
MONTH
For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the spirit without limit. The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.
John 3: 34
The Minister’s Letter
There will be a Contemporary Evening Service at 6.30pm on February 11th.
Following a meeting of the Vision Group it was agreed that there would be an extra meeting of the Kirk Session to be held on Wednesday 21st February at 7.30pm. The purpose of the meeting is to hear a presentation on the installation of vision from John Turner of West Audio. It was thought that this was too important a matter to be discussed the same night as the accounts.
The Art Club will mount a display of new works in the Eglinton Hall on Saturday, April 14th from 10 a.m. till 12.30p.m. Tea and coffee will be available and everyone is welcome to come along to view the range of subjects all of which are for sale. One third of sales will be donated to charity.
The next meeting takes place on 24th January at 2pm when Primrose Young will be telling us
all about the Trades House in Glasgow. Definitely worth hearing!!
On 7th February 'Hymns and their meanings' is our topic at 2pm - always fascinating.
Members please note we are starting our Martha Table at that meeting so kindly try to bring something which you think the rest of us might like to buy!
As always we are pleased to welcome visitors and new members too! MR

We are very sorry to hear of the sudden death of Charity
Chabinga, from an asthma attack. He visited us along with
Anson Singini in 2006. You may well remember them speaking
eloquently in Giffnock South. These two young men were
ambassadors, helping us to proceed with the early stages of our
twinning until it was formalised. We owe them both a great
debt for their efforts. May our thoughts and prayers be with
Mercy Chabinga and her children, Gloria, Faith and Favour at
this time.
There is happy news of Anson and his wife. She has given birth
to a son, Mighty, a sister for eight year old Miracle.
A Sunday School party for children in the Ekwendeni area and a
party for old folk took place for both of which we had provided
funds. There was heavy rain at the time of the old folks treat
but foodstuffs were delivered to their homes where they were
able to share them with grandchildren who could not get to the
party.
The Church Guide has been updated and copies are
available at the front door vestibule or can be obtained
from Jan at the office.
MORE GIFFNOCK SOUTH NEWS
