sA MOMENT ON — THE CROCK POT

The Crock Pot – the original slow cooker which came out in the 1970’s and made by Rival Manufacturing, had its humble begin-nings in the 1930’s.

With the everyday stresses of running a household, both parents working and children of varying ages and activities, it’s no wonder that 83% of households enjoy cooking with a slow cooker. Time plays an integral part in the preparation of a wholesome meal and the crock pot helped to revolutionize the amount of time required for preparing such meals.

Let’s be clear, the crock pot is a brand name, much like Kleenex, Band-Aid, Frisbee, Q-Tips and Coca Cola and it has an interesting history. The story is rooted in Jewish mothers and beans. The de-vice being inspired by the inventors, mother’s beef and bean stew.

Irving Naxon applied for a patent way back in 1936 as America was pulling itself from the grips of the great depression. It was for a food heat-ing device, which consisted of an insert held by a case that held a heating device. It facilitated even cooking in-side the insert and was portable. By 1940 Naxon received his patent called the Naxon Beanery. His Mother’s Stew known as Cholent is a traditional stew that cooked all day. It’s rooted in the Jewish Sabbath, the day of rest. The stew went on the heat before Friday sundown and cooked all the way through Saturday servic-es at sundown. The ovens being turned off for the Sabbath, the Cholent was placed in the oven and the residual heat was enough to cook the stew over 24 hours.

It was during the early 1970’s that Irving Naxon sold his design to Rival Manufacturing. They marketed it as the Crock Pot and sold millions. MAPLE BACON AND BEER BAKED BEANS
