Shana Tova. A few months ago, I was on a call with presidents of large congregations and our URJ contact. We were discussing our journeys, concerns and opportunities when we were asked, “what keeps you up at night?” I didn’t hesitate and responded,
“the thought of speaking in front of 500 plus congregants on Rosh Hashanah!” I’m happy to say, I slept well last night because I realized, I am talking to my family, my friends and my community. Our congregation, this community, is a diverse group of every age and every possible family situation; we live north, south, east, west and midtown. Some can read, write and speak Hebrew fluently and others not a word. Some of us come for Friday and Saturday Shabbat services on a regular basis, some just for B’nai Mitzvah’s, yahrzeit’s, and some just the High Holidays. So, why do we belong and why do we come? I think it’s because we care about the future of Judaism in our community. I like to believe we come because we care about being Jewish. We may come because we are seeking God’s presence. We may come to be with “our community.” We may have come tonight because “that’s what Jews do” or it’s just about a new year, an opportunity for new beginnings, and the synagogue is the place where, for countless generations, Jews have gathered together to share these experiences as part of a community. I have thought about what to talk about for some time. I was going to speak about our renovation and our successful fund-raising efforts, our upcoming 150th anniversary celebration and goals for my term. I realized that all I really want to do tonight is say thank you. Thank you for choosing to be a member of our congregation. Thank you for your Terumah – your ongoing contributions to this synagogue. Thank you for volunteering your time and your talents, here.
Thank you for your understanding, patience and flexibility during this time away from our building. Thank you for saying “yes” whenever you are asked to help. And, thank you for generously supporting our renovation. Pledges continue to come in daily. To date, 410 families have pledged $12,064,858! Your belonging to The Temple, truly supports this institution. We are here because countless generations have belonged to, supported, and valued the future of the Jewish people through the institution of a synagogue. Your being here tonight, your involvement, your generosity and support makes me hopeful as we begin our 150th year. May the year 5780 be filled with inspiration, a new sense of possibility, happiness and peace, and little that keeps you up at night! L‘Shana Tovah,
Jocelyn [email protected] (913) 908-8588

Michael Klein Collection Exploring the Klein Collection When we think of the Italian Renaissance, names that come to mind usually include Michelangelo, Medici, da Vinci. We have, in our building, a name to add to this list. David de Pomis was a
physician, scholar and rabbi active throughout Italy in the 16th century. We know of him partly due to his published works, including a book defending the work and dedication of Jewish physicians. Jews in Renaissance Italy experienced great exchanges of ideas and participated in international
commerce, were leaders in publishing books, and Jewish physicians were allowed to train at several universities. Though some freedoms existed, Jews were still restricted from practicing certain occupations, suffered persecution from several Popes, and were forced to live in ghettos, starting with Venice in 1516. We know that this bronze mortar was made for de Pomis by the featured family crest of an apple (Pomis is “apple” in Latin), and his initials on each side. Another rondelle features a serpent, representing doctors. A mortar similar to this one is the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. Learn more about objects in the Klein Collection at our upcoming Coffee and Collections on Sunday, December 15 and Wednesday, December 18. Abby Magariel - Curator Educator

SOCIAL ACTION
As our High Holidays conclude, we thank all who helped to create meaning, even as we found ourselves “wandering.” To our amazing group of volunteers who served as ushers, greeters, and pitched in wherever and whenever needed; To our great puppeteers, for bringing joy and meaning to our youngest congregants and their families; To our wonderful office and maintenance staff, who quietly prepares and executes the myriad of tasks needed for our High Holidays to occur; To the staff and members of the United Methodist
Church of the Resurrection, for their gracious hospitality and their deep commitment to helping us bring our faith and traditions alive this season; And most of all, to each and every member of our community, for being with us during this transition period, for your understanding and patience, for your support and encouragement. We are blessed with an incredible community.
WE’RE CHANGING & MOVING!!!!! Brotherhood Breakfast Club is now
Brotherhood Breakfast Café Please join us on Sunday morning November 17 in
the ‘Commons Area on your left towards the Chapel. We have updated our Brotherhood appearance,
our coffee service, and more.
Thank you to Mike Zevitz who managed the design process with the assistance of Gary Rogoff, John Waldron, William Rock and Steve Cohen. We are very appreciative of Matt Haar and Alphagraphics for helping to develop the logo and producing three new portable signs that will be used for BBC and other occasions. His contribution was instrumental in helping us to ‘renovate’ our Brotherhood designs and BBC presentation. Look for the directional sign in the entrance and our New Brotherhood apparel. Brotherhood will continue to provide our warm, welcoming, and gastronomic experiences!
