SAFE AND EFFICIENT POST-HARVEST

Our technology allows the arrival of blueberries

in optimal conditions to far markets

The technology of modified

atmosphere packaging (MAP) assets Pac

Life, has allowed exporters give a postharvest

tool, safe and efficient, in the conservation

and transport of Chilean blueberries to far

markets.

In front of the current problems of

some blueberry varieties that have had

recurrent problems in their arrival condition to

Asia and the high variability and instability of

gases that have other MAP packaging of the

market. Life Pac applied engineering in

polymers to their packaging, modifying and

increasing permeability by incorporating

inorganic and synthetic additives (ZEOLITE)

to their blades, thus achieving a "selective

membrane" with greater ability to adapt to the

requirements of blueberries, according status

of maturity and storage temperature.

Blueberries variety Elliot were packed

in containers Pac Life Clear DYNAMIC, on

02-03-2013 with another container trade

MAP, in order to compare both on arrival at

final destination Shanghai, China.

.

Prior to delivery of pallets to Asia,

these were reviewed and monitored his

condition and level of atmosphere, finding

concentrations of CO2 (%) within the safety

zone indicating Pac Life <5%.

Comments from receiver and Pac Life

Technical area

The main difference was recorded on

arrival at destination (40 days after packing),

in the bags tested; are the final levels of O2

and CO2 to witness bag being dangerous, to

the point of cause intoxication due to a high

level of CO2 (> 12%) or anaerobiosis by low

levels to 2% of O2.

Concentrations out of the normal

range for the conservation of blueberries (8 -

12 O2 / 8 -12 CO2) explain in some cases

soft fruit, bad taste and strange odors,

product of fermentative metabolism.

Pac Life containers showed greater

stability in gas exchange, turgid fruit with

good flavor and appearance (keeps bloom),

highlighting minimal gas variability in relation

to the commercial witness.

Chinese Customers and / or receivers

have accused problems in past seasons

realizing that have received fruits with high

levels of rot, soft fruit, estrange odors, and

bad taste using other packaging (MAP)

options which often determines sales and

prices.

Therefore, it is vital that the

packaging MAP to use, has the technology,

chemical physical attributes and qualities that

facilitate the adjustment of the fruit against

changes in temperature or cold breaks, very

common on long trips and sea shipments.
