One of the most important aspects of encountering Jesus is growing in our life of prayer. As such, several of our parishioners are experiencing new ways to pray. At this point, we are focusing on members of the school and parish staff, as well as existing prayer groups within the parish. However, we are looking for ways to help more of our parishioners experience the love of Jesus more profoundly in their life of prayer. In order to help this effort, we will be looking at providing opportunities to strengthen the prayer life of our parishioners. We certainly are open to having any of our parishioners seek this effort, but in a special way we are asking members of our CEC community at St. Francis to consider this opportunity. We are in the preliminary planning stages with this endeavor, but I wanted to communicate this effort sooner rather than later. In Christ, Rev. Patrick A. McLaughlin

Dear Parishioners,

St. Francis of Assisi Parish is working with the Archdiocesan Office of Evangelization andCatechesis (OEC) to implement the pastoral vision of the archdiocese. One of the mostimportant aspects of encountering Jesus is growing in our life of prayer. As such, several ofour parishioners are experiencing new ways to pray. However, we are looking for ways to help more of our parishioners experience the love ofJesus more profoundly in their life of prayer.

In order to help this effort, we will be looking at providing opportunities to strengthen theprayer life of our parishioners. We certainly are open to having any of our parishioners seekthis effort, but in a special way we are asking members of our CEC community at St. Francisto consider this opportunity. We are in the preliminary planning stages with this endeavor, but I wanted to communicate this effort sooner rather than later.

BWN Committee Meeting Minutes August 1, 2018

7:00 PM in Parish Hall

I. Prayer: Missy Braun led us in opening prayer at 7:04 PM.

II. Roll Call: Present were Missy Braun, Carmen Foltz, Julie Krings, Dan Fehringer, Rae Jean Pfeifer, Jordan Bender and Linda Bender. Beverly Zach, Andy Reigle, and Fr. Pat McLaughlin were absent.

III. Auction Items:

• Auction items are being solicited. At the next meeting, Missy Braun will have a list of past donors for members to specifically solicit. Anybody wanting to donate something can talk to a board member or drop items off at the parish office.

• Missy Braun will have donor forms for the next meeting.

IV. Raffle:

• We discussed the raffles. Missy Braun will visit with Fr. Pat about the cookie raffle.

• We will keep the freezer of meat raffle if the businesses will sponsor it.

• We will keep the VIP raffle at $40 but, instead of doing 75, will do 100 this year.

• Discussed the wallet raffle with SCRIP again this year.

V. Other:

• We discussed the need to have policies in place for committee members so they know expectations and terms. Missy Braun will work on this.

• Discussed the 2019 event. Since we have most of it down to a science now at the Community Center, we will probably stay there. It was discussed to do this the 3rd weekend of November. Even though it is still deer season, this seems to be about the best option due to harvest, state volleyball and deer season.

• Jordan Bender said Mark Weidner said it should work to emcee.

• Missy Braun will visit with Fr. Pat about the added auction item at the end of the night for people to donate money.

VI. The Next Meeting: September 5, 2018, at 7:00 PM in the parish hall.

VII. Closing Prayer: Missy Braun closed with prayer at 7:59 PM.

ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI PARISH FINANCE BOARD MEETING MINUTES

AUGUST 8, 2018 The meeting of the finance board opened with prayer led by Fr. Pat at 8 PM on Wednesday, August 18, 2018. Those present were Fr. Pat McLaughlin, Ashley Krings, Dan Fehringer, Pam Pfeifer, Dave Krings, Carol Wemhoff, Tim Werner, Doug Eisenmenger, Lisa Krings and Paul Ramaekers. Bryan Reichmuth was excused. Pastor’s Comments Thank you to Mark Brockhaus for his many years of service to our parish. We thank Tim Werner for joining the board as we say goodbye to Mark. Minutes The minutes were approved as recorded. Financials Financial reports were reviewed and approved. We have received 60 responses for the Tend the Flame Campaign. We will follow up with phone calls in late August to those families who do not respond. It was discussed that we cannot continue to increase tuition to cover the annual wage increases for staff; we have to increase Sunday giving. It was also shared that we must continue to do our best to have our endowment work hard for us. Getting families excited about a relationship with Jesus will result in an increase in giving as they realize that Jesus is the Pearl of Great Price. Finance Board Raffle UTV raffle sales have begun. We have advertised on Facebook and are in the process of placing flyers in the area. The meeting closed with a prayer led by Fr. Pat at 9:15 PM. Respectfully Submitted, Lisa Krings

St. Francis of Assisi School Board Minutes August 18, 2018

The St. Francis school board met on Wednesday, August 8, 2018, in the St. Francis rectory. Members present were Fr. Pat McLaughlin, Mrs. Jennifer Dunn, Amy Classen, Lisa Geilenkirchen, Brandon Morfeld, Ethan Bruland, Doug Eisenmenger and Lindsey Kosch. The opening prayer was led by Fr. Pat. President Doug Eisenmenger called the meeting to order. The August agenda and May minutes were motioned and approved. MONTHLY REPORTS: Administrator’s Report: Mrs. Dunn reported we have 20 students in our kindergarten class this fall and 6 of these students are new families. St Francis has 107 students enrolled in the elementary school and 90 students in the 7-12 level. New playground equipment was purchased this year with the box top money we had received. Mrs. Dunn noted that box top money has gone down in the last few years due to less participation in the program. Mrs. Schumacher will be our new yearbook sponsor and will also head up the school newsletter which will take on a new format as a newspaper. Due to costs and company regulations, the yearbook has been a strain on the budget. Mrs. Schumacher is looking or a different route for yearbooks to help save costs.

Mrs. Dunn reported that St. Francis has been approved by the AdvancED and will continue to be an accredited school. The AdvancED team listed improvement priorities and some of these priorities will be addressed on a school board workday including all board members, Mrs. Dunn and Fr. Pat. Also, the teachers and administration will collaboratively develop a plan to move towards full integration of digital resources for teaching and learning. Finances: Finances were dispensed at this time. President’s Comments: Fr. Pat was approached again by parents about the block vs. traditional scheduling. Lisa Geilenkirchen informed the board about parents’ concerns about the St. Francis Preschool schedule. Some parents are wanting full days and currently St. Francis Preschool offers a ½ day schedule. It was explained that the St. Francis Preschool is a privately-run program. The St. Francis Preschool operates out of the building, but is not part of the K-12 school system. Fr. Pat reported that St. Francis is in the upper quartile in both base salary for teachers and tuition for students as compared to other rural Catholic schools in the archdiocese. He stated that rising costs of salaries is resulting in raising tuition. August Business: Handbook updates were discussed and approved before printing the new student handbook. St. Francis of Assisi Parish Electronic Media Guideline was discussed. This included what will be published on the St. Francis website newsfeed, parish Facebook page and school Facebook page. Fr. Pat reported that the Campus Ministry Team will change from a strictly student-centered approach to an approach that assists all faculty centered in sharing the faith. The change will encourage our faculty to have a more faith centered life, resulting in them teaching and mentoring our students in the Gospel. Mass on the Grass will be held on August 28, 2018. A closing prayer was led by Mrs. Dunn. Lindsey Kosch, Secretary

St. Francis of Assisi Parish Pastoral Council Minutes August 15, 2018

The meeting of the parish pastoral council was called to order at 8 PM on Wednesday, August 15, 2018. Fr. Pat led the opening prayer. Members present were Fr. Pat McLaughlin, Dave Krings, Dan Fehringer, Duane Kosch, Ken Classen, Brandon Morfeld, Bryan Reichmuth, Janet Eisenmenger and DeAnna Heinen. Jeanne Brockhaus was excused. The minutes of the May meeting were approved as written. The Parish Pastoral Council members were divided into groups and discussed what was read thus far in the book, “Catholic and Christian”, written by Alan Schreck. COMMITTEE REPORTS: School Board: Student enrollment for 2018-2019 is as follows:

• 6 new families • 19 Kindergartners • 107 Kindergarten through 6th graders • 92 grades 7th thru 12

Parents were encouraged to keep collecting box tops. Additional playground equipment was purchased with this money. The school newsletter will now be in newspaper form. Mrs. Schumacher will take over this duty along with the yearbook. St. Francis School received AdvancED accreditation. Mrs. Dunn stated that there are resources available for student usage of technology. Discussion was held on updates with the student handbook and the dress code changes. The French Toast clothing line can now be used, and the students may wear either white or navy shirts. Campus Ministry has shifted more of its focus on faculty instead of so much on the students. There will be a grade school open house on August 28 starting at 5:45 PM followed by Mass on the Grass at 6:30 PM. Finance Board: The parish endowment board will consider the finance board’s request to further diversify our endowment funds. The UTV raffle tickets are being sold. The drawing will take place at the St. Francis Bazaar on Sunday, October 7, 2018. Only 400 tickets will be sold. The tickets can be purchased at the

parish office or from any parish council, school board, finance board or endowment board member. Development: The “Tend the Flame” campaign is underway with 60 responses out of 455 envelope holders. Parishioners not responding will be contacted by mail or phone. Fr. Pat suggested using a thermometer-type scale to show the number of parishioners and the amount of progress. A reminder will also be put in the bulletin to remind parishioners of the campaign. A meeting will be held soon to check on progress of the campaign. OLD BUSINESS: Discussion was held on the St. Francis Website/Social Media Guidelines. Updates can only be done by the parish and school offices. Parishioners are encouraged to watch the parish Facebook pages’ newsfeed for trivia questions. Confession scheduling was discussed. Fr Pat reminded the council that individuals or families can schedule confession by appointment any time. Fr. Pat is checking into samples of leaflets to place in each book holder in the pews regarding how to have a good confession. This may be encouraging to those who are reluctant to go to confession. Fr. Pat has been in contact with the Office of Evangelization and Catechesis in order to work towards our goal of having “230 Disciple Makers” in our parish. This office will continue to provide resources to transform our parish and may assist us in looking at new directions our parish pastoral council can take. The Strategic Planning committee meeting with the three parishes will take place on Tuesday, August 21, 2018, in the parish hall. Three representatives from each parish will be attending. NEW BUSINESS: St. Francis School is in the top 25% of the diocese, in the rural area, regarding the cost of tuition and teacher salaries. A discussion was held on possibly holding “special services” such as:

• “Blessing of Seeds” (April) • “Feast of the Holy Innocents-Lost Children” (December 28) • “Feast of St. Gerard Majella” (October 16).

These “special services” could be mentioned through St. Francis media, the Tau, etc., or a special prayer service could be held for community members in need, perhaps those affected by the storm. This would help with consolation of sorrows and hope for the lost. The PEACE Corp and Fr. Pat were complimented for the nice gestures shown to the recent storm victims in our community.

PASTOR’S REPORT: There are bats in the grade school. The parish will contact the exterminator company. They have not charged for a service call since the initial installation of equipment. The staff retreat was well received. The school year is off to a good start. The high school photocopier had to be replaced, the cost was approximately $15,000. The front doors to the high school need to be replaced. As such, families are encouraged to donate this through memorials. Future fundraisers might be utilized to assist with this capital improvement. The meeting adjourned at 9:18 PM. The next meeting is scheduled for September 19, 2018, at 7 PM. DeAnna Heinen, Secretary

All Knights of Columbus meetings will be held every 2nd Thursday of the month at 7:30 PM in the parish hall with the exception for the

months of June, July and August.

PRAYERS FOR GRANDPARENTS

Lord Jesus, You were born of the Virgin Mary,

the daughter of Saints Joachim and Anne. Look with love on grandparents the world over.

Protect them! They are a source of enrichment

for families, for the Church and for all of society. Support them! As they grow older,

may they continue to be for their families strong pillars of Gospel faith,

guardians of noble domestic ideals, living treasuries of sound religious traditions. Make them teachers of wisdom and courage, that they may pass on to future generations

the fruits of their mature human and spiritual experience.

Lord Jesus, help families and society to value the presence and roles of grandparents.

May they never be ignored or excluded, but always encounter respect and love.

Help them to live serenely and to feel welcomed in all the years of life which You give them.

Mary, Mother of all the living, keep grandparents constantly in your care,

accompany them on their earthly pilgrimage, and by your prayers, grant that all families may one day be reunited in our heavenly homeland, where You await all humanity

for the great embrace of life without end. Amen!
