The Tanglin Club

Dear Members,

It has been an eventful 2010/11. Dur ing the yea r , t he C lub

welcomed 151 Ordinary Members and 67 Term Members, bringing our total Ordinary Membership to 3,888 against a Planned Total Membership (PTM) of 4,000.

An attempt to get Members’ approval by way of a resolution to increase the PTM from 4,000 to 4,500 at a Special General Meeting (SGM) on 15 November 2010, was unfortunately unsuccessful. Although this resolution did receive good support from 62% of the Members who voted, it fell short of the required

75% majority. Nevertheless, we will be making another attempt to vote on this resolution at the Annual General Meeting on 25 April.

At the same SGM of 15 November 2010, all the nine resolutions, mainly pertaining to Rule changes, were passed and adopted. The Registrar of Societies has since approved all the Rule changes.

On the Development side, I am happy to report that the renovation of the Wheelhouse and the Main Swimming Pool were completed on schedule. The Children’s Play Area is due for completion any time now; the slight delay of about a month was due to some compliance requirements by the building authorities. Work on the refurbishment of the Club’s 16 guestrooms commenced on 1 March, and the new guestrooms should be ready to welcome their Guests by May 2011

Food & Beverage (F&B), which continues to be the anchor of the Club both from the revenue source and facilities provision points of view, did reasonably well despite the closure of the Wheelhouse for some four months of the year. This was evidenced by the significant increase in covers, an almost 30% jump over

the previous year. However, the gross F&B revenue intake grew only marginally by about 2%. This could be largely due to the change in the basis on which a “cover’” is determined.

Sports & Recreat ion, which feature quite prominently in the Club’s offerings, powered on with the various tournaments involving Tennis, Swimming, Squash, Golf, Lawn Bowls, Darts, etc., and with stepped-up training in Tennis, Swimming, and, yes, even Scuba and Bridge.

The calendar of the Club for the year was well blanketed with events and entertainment, mainly held to coincide with the major Singapore festivals and celebrations, much to the joy of Members and their friends.

It now leaves me once again, to express my gratitude to Members for your confidence in me and the General Committee to lead the Club during the past year. I would also like to thank the Management and Staff for your diligence and dedication. Together, we have made the Club what it is, and we should be truly proud of it.

Dear Members,

After a long wait and some delays, the newly created Chi ldren’s facilities and Pool will finally be ready this month.

Work has been completed, and we are just waiting now to get the various authority approvals to occupy and use this area.

Together with the opening of the Children’s area, we will also open the newly extended lift access to Levels 2 and 3 of the car park. This will take Members directly to the Wheelhouse/Pool level or Tavern/Main Lobby level. This improvement should make it much easier for Members to get to their favorite Food & Beverage (F&B) outlet. With the opening of the lift, we would also activate the proximity door entry systems to the Terrace Bar and Swimming Pool level.

Members are required to sign in their Guests in the Guestbook, and they are to ensure their Guests observe the Club’s Rules & Bye-Laws.

We a re p l ann ing a Fam i l y Poolside Carnival on Saturday,

21 May to celebrate the completion and reopening of the new facilities, and you will find more details in the May issue.

Meanwhi le , the gues t room renovations have been progressing very well, and we do expect the first rooms to be ready for our Members and their Guests in early May.

In the area of Food & Beverage, we have lined up a number of new items, such as the Express Lunch buffet at Tangles. There’s a different theme each day of the week: Chinese on Monday, Western on Tuesday, Local on Wednesday, Mediterranean on Thursday and Curry on Friday, at only $10.85 per person.

Sti l l on the subject of food, mark your diary for another guest chef Wine Dinner at the Churchill Room on Saturday, 21 May. It is a modern Chinese menu created by chef Thomas Chai, who was behind My Humble House.

Another date to remember is the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. Members can watch the event live at our outlets on

Friday, 29 April from 5pm onwards, while enjoying your favorite foodand drinks.

It now leaves me to wish all Members celebrating Easter, a Happy Easter holiday.

With warm regards,

Herbert HoferGeneral ManagerThe Tanglin Club

A Happy Ending for EveryoneThe 21 February Charity Sale in the Churchill Room drew droves of Members, who took home a piece of Club “memorabilia”. On sale were used but well-maintained crockery, cutlery, books, DVDs and a large number of red and white wines.

The proceeds, with the exception of the wine sales, went to the Children’s Aid Society – the Club’s chosen charity for the past two years. A cheque was presented to the Society by the Club’s President, Joseph Chew, at a simple ceremony.

Our Annual General Meeting is scheduled for 25 April. All

manner of really important matters will be dealt with in this coming session, but none more so than the election of the President, the Vice-President, the Honorary Treasurer, and eight General Committee (GC) Members.

The deadline for applications to these posts is Monday, 4 April. Eligibility is spelt out under Section 5 of the Club Rules, copies of which are readily available at the Main Building Reception, if you need to refresh your memory in this regard.

Also, for those of you unable to make the time commitment to stand for the Committee, but would still like to make some meaningful contribution, Rule 5 (v) (a) provides for the Committee to be able to co-opt any Member to serve on our Sub-Committees. Applications in this regard are also most welcome.

As a Member of the GC, now six years away from honourable septuagenarian status (and one of the younger Members of a Committee

heavily sprinkled with octogenarians), I am a firm believer that the only way to maintain and improve our current vibrant social and sports environment, and steadily introduce modern superior hi-tech services, is to attract younger talent to serve on our Committee.

Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying there is no place for our elderly Members to be represented on the Committee. What I’m saying, is that we now definitely need a more representative balance, not just a continuing sameness in attitudes and preferences.

And where are our lady Member representatives? Here again, there is a terrible mismatch between the number of our lady Members and their essential, but missing, presence on the Committee.

By and large, the Club has a massive silent majority. Occasionally, a few Members bestir themselves just enough to lodge a complaint or two regarding some aspect of the Club’s operations, usually about perceived deficiencies in rather trivial matters.

This is all well and good, but it is not enough. To paraphrase US President, John F Kennedy: “Ask not what the Club can do for you, but ask what you can do for the Club.”

Committee membership has great value in terms of business and social connections. And, believe it or not, many aspects of the work are really interesting and informative. The Club is a complicated multimillion dollar business, with millions earmarked each year for capital works as we head towards our 150th Anniversary celebrations. A great deal of innovative thought and work will be needed, and it is here that we most need a fresh perspective on what will be best to meet the changing needs and demands of all our Members, young and old alike.

So, ladies and gentlemen, it’s high time to step up to the plate and make your presence felt.

The Tanglin Club

Churchill Room, Main Entrance,Lobby & Restrooms RenovationRationaleThe intent to rejuvenate the façade, Main Lobby and Churchill Room is part of the long term plan to restore The Tanglin Club to its glory days when the Club celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2015. These are three separate projects, but all are intertwined: the entrance and foyer are maintenance/housekeeping items, while the Churchill Room could be a good revenue generator, as well as increase the prestige of the Club with its uniqueness. The Main Clubhouse has been through a few years of minimum maintenance, and the Main Entrance and Lobby are beginning to look shabby, not befitting a prestigious international Club. The Churchill Room, which is used as both a fine dining restaurant as well as a banqueting/function room for Members, is in need of a comprehensive refurbishment exercise. While efforts will be made to preserve its traditional values and sentiments, the Club has to update its facilities to match, or even exceed, the current needs of Members. In February 2010, the menu of the Churchill Room was changed to Clubs of the World, and menu pricing adjusted to reflect approximately 25% higher prices than in the Tavern, and also

preserving the concept of “Everyday Good Value”. This has resulted in increased usage from 2009 to 2010, and better profitability. This has given us the confidence to push forward with a modest renovation to compliment this style – with little risk of making an expensive mistake.

ApproachPrevious General Committees (GC) tried to explore the feasibility of converting the room into a Chinese restaurant in collaboration with reputable restaurant operators such as Tung Lok and Imperial Treasure, but were unsuccessful. A $250,000 budget was approved in the current financial year for cyclical repairs, which the Development & Property Sub-Committee (DPSC) reviewed, and was of the view that the Club had to look at a long term strategic plan for the façade, Main Lobby and Churchill Room as a whole. The current GC shares the same view as the DPSC and finds it most appropriate to upgrade the Main Entrance, Lobby and Churchill Room so that consistency can be achieved in the design and quality of the finishes in all three areas.

What Has Been and Needs to be DoneThe proposed method of contract recommended by the GC is the common Design and Build system,

which was also successfully used for the Wheelhouse, Swimming Pool and currently, the guestrooms. The planning, selection, and assessment process commenced in October 2010, with the issue of a Tender Notice in the Straits Times in early December 2010. The detailed sequence of events following the proposed works and cost breakdown from the Design and Build contractor, Cynosure Design, will be displayed on the Club’s website and at the Main Lobby. The total estimated cost before contingencies for all areas stands at $2,500,000. The amount for the Churchill Room will be $1,100,000, with a payback period of 6.5 years, or 15% ROI. A suitable contingency sum of $300,000 is recommended. The final total is therefore no more than $2,800,000, which is considered to be a reasonable and prudent investment for such an important area of the Club. Design perspectives of the various areas will be displayed in the Main Lobby. A slideshow will also be shown on our Digital Signage and also on the Club’s website.

Objectives of Refurbishment Works1) The façade of the Main Entrance is unbalanced, where we have a

RENOVATION PROPOSAL

balcony outside Deli Lounge and a recessed landscape planter outside the Churchill Room. Hence, we have planned for an extension from the Churchill Room’s Bar, creating an outdoor drinking and smoking area, to balance the left and right side of the façade. We will also incorporate a platform lift on the right side of the steps, making it possible for Members on wheelchairs and those pushing prams to enter the Club via the main entrance, and have a security counter on the left side. The platform lift will also serve Members, and Staff handling the heavy luggage of Guests patronising our guestrooms. Subject to approval, the existing canopy over the drop-off will be removed and replaced with a new canopy, which will be lighter in structure and introduce more light into the Main Lobby. Another feature will be the extension further out towards the incoming vehicular lane, hence providing proper shelter for Members and Guests alighting at the Main Entrance as well as for the taxi pick-up/drop-off area.

2) The Main Lobby will have a makeover, with new marble flooring to complement the existing wooden panels, where the majority will be reconditioned to preserve the Club’s heritage. The dated chandeliers will be replaced with a new centrepiece and a proper built-in light system to allow different light settings for different events. A new reception counter will be constructed for better utilisation

of space. The male and female restrooms will be given a brand new look, and a new, separate restroom for handicapped users will be constructed to provide convenience for them and the elderly.

3) The Churchill Room has only been given minor repairs and replacements in the past, which merely involved touching up of the wooden panels, replacement of curtains and the reupholstering of sofas and chairs. In this case, the GC is proposing a comprehensive refurbishment package, including the stage, lighting, audio and visual systems. The selection of finishes, fixtures and fittings was done with the intent to preserve the Churchill Room’s character, which will further entice Members to patronise its fine dining facilities. The new stage will be located at the end of the room, allowing for extra seating capacity as well as improving its all-round visibility for all diners. The addition of the balcony and new entrances will increase space utilisation, and allow the balcony to be used by Members who smoke, while increasing the revenue earning possibilities of the Churchill Room Bar and the Deli Lounge. The Churchill Room Bar will have an ambience that will attract all Members seeking a more formal cocktail experience. By upgrading the lighting and audio visual systems, the room will be able to cater to the needs of our discerning Members at the highest level, with a more professional and versatile set-up, and mood settings

for different events. The GC and Management are confident that the upgraded Churchill Room will perform better as a fine dining restaurant as well as a banqueting and function room, and hence, will generate more revenues for the Club in the long run.

The Churchill Room generated $1,240,000 in sales with 25,780 covers in the last financial year. After the renovation, we forecast $1,530,000 in revenue with 28,800 covers.

TimingIt is estimated the renovations at the Churchill Room and foyer will take about three months, plus another two months for the Entrance. It is not expected that revenue for Food & Beverage will decrease significantly, as Members switch to other outlets in the Club. There was no drop in revenue due to the four-month closure of the Wheelhouse.

GeneralThese three sections will have to be renovated now or sometime in the near future. The Club has ample reserves, so financing is not a problem.

Children’s Etiquette Class19 March at the Raffles Room‘Thumbs Up for Etiquette Class’We booked our daughters and a few of their friends, aged between nine and 12, for the Social Graces and Dining Etiquette Class at The Tanglin Club.

Although the girls were a little reticent about attending it, the course was very informative, fun and enjoyable. All of them came out a little more confident about how to behave properly at the dinner table, what to do in situations where they are meeting people, and how to make a good first impression.

I would highly recommend this course for all children to supplement what they are taught at home, which quite often falls on deaf ears!

Many thanks.

Murder Mystery You Only Die TwiceFriday, 20 May, 7.30pm at the Churchill RoomWelcome to the final day of shooting for You Only Die Twice, the latest in the long-running action movie series, featuring British special agent Matt Turbo, starring Jasper Black. You are the extras on the set, and you can expect a lot more than air kisses and autographs from the luvvies at a murder mystery dinner. Paragon Pictures is seeking to broaden the film’s appeal with the casting of soccer ace Robbie Walker, much to the contempt of Helen Smyth, doyenne of the stage, who has condescended to appear after a long period of “rest”. The knives will definitely be out on the set of this dramatic dinner event produced by Masquerade. Be a

sleuth, follow the clues, question the suspects and solve the mystery. Or just relax, wine and dine and enjoy the fun.

DARTS

When I told my friends that I was going to play Darts at the Club on a Saturday afternoon, they were

very surprised. Many would have preferred to catch a nap and be ready to have a good time later in the night.

As it turned out, I was not let down, for we had a good international crowd of darters, comprising two Americans, two Japanese and an Indian national besides the Singaporeans. With the number of darters present, we were able to organise three competitions, a ladies doubles, a mens trio, and a mixed trio comprising two men and a lady.

The ladies started the competition first, and as they were evenly matched, the competition was very exciting and could have gone either way. The men did not keep quiet. As the game progressed, many were seen cheering for those they were supporting. Bruce Kroyer, whose wife Carol was playing in the competition, was actively urging her on. It worked. Carol and her partner Deepa Gupta eventually emerged the winners.

Following the ladies, it was the men’s turn. The trio comprising Yuji Ono, David Goh and Khor Buck Chye managed to start their game (starting with a double, 1,001 points and ending with a double) first as their specialist for double 19, Buck Chye, was able to land his dart on the double.

The team comprising Bruce, Andrew Leong and M C Cheong were having problems landing on a double. By the time they did it, their competitors were half way through, having accumulated more than 500 points. Bruce and company were not prepared to give up easily. They put up a strong challenge and managed to catch up when Yuji’s team was trying to get its double to complete the game.

In fact, Bruce’s team made a spectacular recovery and the team managed to reach a stage where it could have won the game had M C not made an error in his throw. This gave Yuji’s team a chance to finish the game. Out from nowhere came David, the giant killer, and the dart

he threw landed on the double his team was trying so very hard to get, and thus his team won the game.

For the final game we decided to play Round the Clock. Both teams were equally matched at the beginning, and were fighting neck-to-neck until Bruce used his trump card and began the kill. This gave his team, which comprised Bruce, Yasuko Kurosu and Yuji, a good lead over Buck Chye’s team, which comprised David, Deepa and Buck Chye. With the good lead, Bruce’s team needed to have a good finish and Yuji was on target to give his team the winning dart.

Instead of being a slow afternoon, it turned out to be one that was full of excitement. We hope Members reading this interesting account will turn up to support the event when it is next organised, on the first Saturday in April.

DARTS

Annual General MeetingWith our individual Darts and Team championship being scheduled on the Saturday afternoon of 30 April, the Darts Section decided to hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM) during the prize presentation in the evening.

All Section Members are strongly urged to attend the AGM, for following that, there will be a free buffet dinner. For those attending the AGM and who would like to serve the Darts Section, please submit your names to Alan Tan at the Sports Office by 15 April.

During the dinner, there will be a prize presentation to the winners and runners-up of the Darts competition.

A function of this nature must have good entertainment to go along with it and the Section is mindful of this, and will be putting up a show for Members to enjoy. If you want to invite your friends to the dinner, you are most welcome. Each Guest will be charged a fee of $25. Please register early to avoid disappointment as places are limited and they are on a first-come, first-served basis. The last day of registration is Monday, 25 April, provided that all the places have not been taken.

SayonaraWe will soon be saying goodbye to some of our

International Members. Bruce and Carol Kroyer will be going back to the US after having spent two years in sunny Singapore. Likewise, we will also be saying goodbye to Yasuko and her husband Kurosu Satoru as

they too will be going back to Japan.M C organised a farewell party at the Wheelhouse

on 28 March to enable fellow darters to say goodbye to them. The date was chosen as it was Yuji’s birthday.

Practice Makes PerfectPractice makes perfect as the saying goes. But if you don’t have a passion for darts you will never be great! Here’s a little tip for beginners. When you are playing a game (it depends on the game) and you want to throw a number but are afraid you will miss, concentrate and aim for the T (trip). Always be cool, calm and collected. What is most important is believe in yourself. That’s the golden rule.

Endurance TrainingAs the name suggests, endurance training is any form of physical activity that lasts for a prolonged period of time, usually more than 40 minutes per session. With so much debate and discussion on the effectiveness of endurance training, you are likely to be confused with too much information.

Endurance training helps to challenge the mind and body. A good guide to estimating your level of activity is a combination

of knowing your rate of perceived exertion or RPE, and your target heart rate (THR) zone (65% to 75% of your maximum heart rate or MHR).

E n d u r a n c e t r a i n i n g a l s o strengthens the immune system, deve lop s men ta l f ocu s and increases the cardiovascular efficiency for endurance exercises such as marathons and triathlons.

The table below is a guide to the respective THR ranges for your various exercise objectives.

If you check out the nutrition section in a bookshop, chances

are you will find tonnes of books offering the “truth” on fat loss. Chances are you will leave feeling more confused than before, since every expert seems to be offering conflicting advice. You wonder if you need a degree in nutritional biochemistry to figure it out.

The truth of the matter i s there are more similarities in most successful nutritional programmes than you think. What often happens is that certain nutritional tenets are emphasised, while others are downplayed. Rather than focusing on the differences, let us look at the basic fundamental principles that most successful mainstream programmes advocate.

• Eat five or six small meals a day: Spreads your meals out over the course of a day rather than consuming one or two large meals daily. This will keep your blood sugar stable.

• Limit your consumption of sugar or processed foods:This includes soft drinks, even sports drinks, laden with sugar, which provide empty calories.

• Replace your carbohydrates with fruits and vegetables. Think fibre: This provides you lots of vitamins and minerals, they are not very calorie dense and you can eat larger quantities without worrying about consuming too many calories.

• Drink more water and cut out high-calorie beverages: This ties in with the second point. We are looking at beer, soft drinks, coffee and tea with lots of milk and sugar, etc.

• Consume a lean protein source with every meal:

Dietary protein is crucial in the rebuilding and recovery process.

• Get a few grammes of fish oil each day, either through fish and/or supplements with Omega-3: Omega-3 fats are a family of essential unsaturated fats that are touted for their heart health properties, potential in aiding recovery, and reducing the risk of several other diseases as well.

If you are able to stick these principles 90% of the time, you should see improvement in your body composition.

Fair Weather GolfersTwenty Golfers from The Tanglin Club headed off to Keppel Club in March and had a fantastic afternoon playing four ball on Singapore’s prettiest but most challenging course.

The natural temptation was to bring out the driver to shorten this already short course. But after a few holes, match play competitiveness took over with fairway woods replacing drivers and bogey golf replaces going for it.

The end result? Three draws, a two and one, a four and three, five boxes of Titleist and 12 diners at Peony Jade.

On behalf of the 19 other players, thanks go to Captain S T Yeo for her team selection skills; and from all 20 who played, a big thank you to our new Sports & Recreation Manager, Christine Koh, for scoring a hit in organising her first match.

Foul Weather GolfersSixteen golfers from The Tanglin Club turned up at the SAFRA course in Changi to play the quarterly Inter-Social Club Golf game only to be beaten by the weather. Special mention goes to Fred Kloppers for tearing himself away from the house to organise and captain our Team and to Andrew Lochrie for tearing himself away from his office desk at a moment’s notice to make up the numbers.

Next Month’s GolfersI t cou ld be you. Watch out for the emai l s announcing one, i f not two chances, to play in April.

Next Year’s GolfersTwelve hands went up expressing their interest in serving in the 2011/2012 Golf Sub-Committee: Alex Eow, David James, Erich Erber, June Seegers, Jurgen Martiens, Kurt Potschke, Ranjan Ramchandani, Sunil Tuli, Wong Kwong Chai, S T Yeo, Yung Shing Wai and yours truly. SQUASH

The Tanglin Club’s International Jumbo Doubles Tournament for the President’s

Cup is Singapore’s largest annual Squash event, and i t has become the largest softball Jumbo Doubles tournament in the world.

This year, the tournament was held from 24 to 27 February. Eighty-six teams entered the tournament, some coming from as far afield as Northern Ireland, Finland, the US (California) and Australia.

As in previous years, the tournament was a huge success. The tried-and-tested formula of a Welcome Bar-B-Que Dinner under a marquee on the Friday night was as much fun as always. Hungry players devoured the excellent spread of food accompanied by the sounds of Darcy McColl’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Machine.

The traditional Churchill Room Sunday Farewell Lunch and Prize-giving is a highlight and, as always, was very well attended. The Club received glowing accolades from Members of the visiting reciprocal Clubs and other participating players.

As usual, we ran an Open event and a Veterans event for the over-50s. The level of play and strength in depth continues to rise in this tournament. It is particularly notable in the Open, where we have a Plate event for the losers of the first round, and a Classic Plate event for those that go out in the second round.

The Classic Plate has become an exciting, hard-fought tournament in its own right. The general level of play is as high as it was in the Open a few years ago. This event adds a great deal to the overall enjoyment of the weekend for many players, and is a big “plus” for the tournament.

The emergence of younger talent was

noticeable, continuing the trend seen at the Singapore Closed Jumbo Doubles tournament we ran a few months ago. The eventual tournament winners were the defending champions from last year, Timothy Arnold and Aaron Chee from Malaysia. In an exciting final, they held off the challenge mounted by Singapore’s brightest young talents, Marcus Phua and Samuel Kang. The Veterans event was won by The Tanglin Club’s own team of Darcy McColl and Ashley Gunning.

A words of thanks is deserved for the supporting Club Staff who did a great job and enabled the tournament to run very smoothly.

We are pleased to welcome Ruvini D Francisco to Total Swimming’s team of dedicated coaches. He

will soon become a familiar face to you all at the Club, and we would like to take this opportunity to introduce him to you.

Ruvini is from the Philippines. He studied at the University Santo Tomas and has an impressive personal swimming background, having been Team Captain of the Marist Golden Sharks Swimming Team. He has been a coach for 15 years, and he has taught age-group swimmers from various schools and clubs in the Philippines, some of whom have participated in national meets, South-east Asia age-group meets and the SEA Games.

He is fondly known by his swimmers as Coach Vini. As a coach, he believes strongly that it is his responsibility to help mould the character of his swimmers so that they learn to respect both themselves and their team. Ruvini said: “Swimming is not just long swims, hard workouts and drills, it’s also a way of life”.

In his leisure time, Ruvini enjoys playing basketball, frisbee, soccer and billiards. He also loves to sing and play the guitar. He is also a “grease monkey”.

Ruvini is excited to be working at the Tanglin Club, and looks forward to meeting you.

Annual Quadrangular Tournament The Tanglin Club hosted this year’s Quadrangular against our friends from the Keppel Club, American Club and Hollandse Club.

We had seven matches to play against each team. They were: Mens Open, Ladies Open, Mens Over 35, Ladies Over 35, Mixed 68 and Mixed 98.

We had 18 Tanglin players in this very competitive tournament and as reigning champions, we hoped to hold onto the trophy.

The first setback was rain. We had to reduce all matches to one set and sudden death deuces. On the first day, The Tanglin Club took the American Club six sets to one, while Keppel did the same to their Hollandse Club opponents.

We had a very nice dinner that evening for all participants, followed by a karaoke session. Tennis Captain, Vincent Lam, started us off and that set some keen singers from the Keppel Club off. As the night progressed there was no holding back our neighbours from the American Club.

There was more Tennis and more rain the next day. It was always going to be a close fight between Keppel and Tanglin. This year we came in second (3-4), followed by the American Club and the Hollandse Club.

Although we lost the overall trophy, the Veterans Ladies Trophy went to the undefeated pair of Cathy Leow and Virginia Longfellow, and the Mens Veterans Trophy went to Andrew Longfellow and Dave Ng.

LAWN BOWLS

39

The green has been well used during the first three months of the year, but Tanglin Club Bowls, apart from Monday evening league games, has been

concerned only with social bowls. Nevertheless, this has been much enjoyed by the nucleus of players who

turn out regularly on Sunday afternoons. Championship games, both in relation to Singles and Pairs are now under way, and the first batch of results will be reported next month.

We have an ambitious programme ahead, with a mix of friendlies against domestic and overseas clubs, in-house Section matches, and, of course, the Inter-Section Henton Cup match. Watch this space for further details.

Any non-Section Members reading this, who would like to try their hand at the sport, need only show up at the green on any Sunday afternoon at 4pm. They will be assured of a friendly welcome and enthusiastic coaching. The only equipment needed are flat-soled shoes. Come and join us!

Happy bowling!

Tanglin Junior Tennis Tournament Series Event No. 1

The Tanglin Junior Tennis Tournament is a series of four junior Tennis tournaments to be held at the Club throughout the year, in an effort to give the junior players of the Club much-needed match play. The first tournament of the year, Event No. 1 was held from March 4 to 6 with over 40 children registering for three events: 10 and under, 12 and under, and the Open category. Boys and girls were combined in all events, with the sole purpose of being able to play as many matches as possible.

The tournament was blessed with sunny weather for the whole weekend, which was a blessing for the organisers, as they had over 120 matches to get through. There were some closely fought matches throughout the weekend, one being a 10 and under round-robin match

between Nicholas Chu and seven-year-old Clare Cheng. In an extremely tough match, Nicholas was able to claw his way back from a 5-2 deficit, and go on to claim a 6-5 victory over his very determined and competitive opponent in Clare. Great match!

Overall, the event was a great success, with many first-time participants out on court, as well as the experienced national-level tournament players. Congratulations to all the children who participated, and we look forward to seeing more players for the remaining three events.
