For any journalist, visiting CNN headquarter is a dream coming true!!!

On July 23rd, 2015, SUSI scholars visited the CNN Domestic and International Newsrooms

with a VIP Tour of the Studios. They also briefly met with the World News producers and

asked questions regarding the newsgathering as well as technology and staff. The SUSI 2015

scholars are already familiar with CNN Global Network but this trip specifically helped them

to witness the real world experience of CNN and the way it functions. They scholars were

amazed to see the newsrooms and described it as a distinguished world of media.

Coca-Cola is one of the top 3 global

brands. It has products in most of the coun-

tries around the world. This year’s scholars

are from 16 countries and Coca-Cola has

products in all of the scholars' countries.

This trip introduced the scholars to global

Media Marketing & U.S. Corporate Culture.

The scholars learned about the world’s best

known soft-drink brand in its role as part of

a universal pop culture, and also met with

marketing and advertising executives to dis-

cuss global branding.

It was a great opportunity for scholars to see

the advertising/marketing side of media

from one of the popular global brands. They

also loved the Tasting ROM where they could

try sodas from 100 different countries, which

they found it really “cool”.

Scholars visited Jimmy Carter Library and Mu-seum during their trip in Atlanta. This tour in-troduced and presented the presidential histo-ry in U.S. They visited the exhibit of significant events occurring during President Jimmy Carter's life and political career, which in-cludes photographs with interpretive text and interactive mechanism. The scholars also learned about Jimmy Carter’s organization role in holding transparent elections in different countries.

the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Mu-seum is part of the Presidential Library system administered by the National Archives and Records Administration, a Federal government agency.

The scholars visited MLK memorial and Ebenezer Church to explore history of the city and the civil rights movement and to meet with civil rights historian. This trip introduced schol-ars to the history of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. Although previous trips like the Little Cities of Black Diamonds helped the scholars understand the concept of Civil Rights Movement, this trip added more in-depth information and context to their under-standing of this historical period of time in the United States.

The SUSI program invited the scholars to the SunDial Upscale Restaurant for dinner in Atlanta. This restaurant is Atlanta's only tri-level dining complex featuring a revolving up-scale restaurant and an observatory view level offering a breathtaking 360-degree panora-ma of the magnificent Atlanta skyline. The purpose of this event was to take the scholars to one of the finest hotel in the United States where they could experience not only a good hospitality but also see the city from top down and enjoy their meal in a warm and friendly

environment.

The E.W. Scripps School of Journalism exhibited a huge achieve of books and asked

the scholars to take them as presents. The scholars appreciated the generosity of

Journalism school and each of them collected books that interested them the most.

After a weekend full of activities in Atlanta, scholars returned Athens. The class sessions re-sumed on Monday July 27th, 2015 and scholars had a lot to catch up as it was the last week of their class training. Lectures on New Media, Technology & Social Media by Dr. Hans Meyer and Social Media Research were offered by Dr. Parul Jain. Following the insightful lectures, In-dian and Chilean scholars presented on New Me-dia Literacy Research and New Media Storytelling and Puroperiodismo.cl that enriched the discus-sion even more and brought a new perspective to the topics presented. Furthermore, Dr. Emily Metzgar, a guest lecturer from Indiana University, lectured on Mediated Public Diplomacy. Following the lecture. Chinese scholar presented on the ways China uses media to present its International public face. The following day, lectures offered on the Military and the Media as well as National and State Poli-tics by Andy Alexander, former Washington Post Ombudsman and Cox News Washington Bureau Chief , Jim Mitchell, PA Operations Chief, 88th Air Base Wing Public Affairs and Tom Suddes, Cleveland Plain Dealer Political Columnist. Moreover, lectures on Diversity (Race, Gender, Sexual Orientation, Religion) and Media in the United States were given by Sarah Jenkins, Delfin Bautista, and JoAnne Viviano. The purpose of all these lectures were to provide scholars with an overview of the United States media and Journalism with detailed focus on specific topics. The lectures focused mostly on what has been done, what are some basic chal-lenges regarding the particular topic, what needs to be addressed. The scholars now have a better understanding not only how the United States’ Media and Journalism functions but also they are aware of the global media and journalism.

After four weeks intensive training, the scholars are successfully done with the classes

and its requirements. The scholars presented their proposals on ambitious projects that

can possibly bring positive changes to their community ant their countries. At the end of

the presentations, Professor Scott Titsworth, the Dean of Scripps College of Communica-

tion at Ohio University distributed the certificates and challenged scholars to expand

their networks and keep connected to each other after SUSI program. The day ended

with a formal reception. Well deserved celebration!
