A Workman Called from Labor... Andy Paradowski, a Legacy of Service

At two-thirty in the afternoonon Friday, October 8, 2010, whilegetting ready to drive Barb to work, Igot a call from brother Joe Fahrenkopf,telling me that Andy Paradowski hadpassed away. I will never forget theway I felt at that moment.

The following days leading upto Andy’s Memorial Service, werefilled with sadness and confusion. Brothers and friends gathered in homesand bars to share their feelings ofincredible disbelief and anguish. Masons, former Boy Scouts, andTriangle Fraternity members met andmingled in desperation to try andcomprehend the terrible loss we wereall experiencing as the news continuedto travel by phone and over the internet.

When the time came to sayfarewell, the small ante-chamber atMcKinley Lodge filled to over-flowingwith men in white aprons. BrotherBrad Behlke, long-time friend of Andy,showed composure for the first time inweeks, having lost his grandfather,Norman Behlke just a week before.

The last time I saw Andy wasat Norman’s memorial service. I hadcome in a little late, and Andy met meand led me into a small room to see thatI had an apron, gloves, and a sprig of

evergreen. He then did the same for the Most Worshipful Grand Master JoeHarker who walked in behind me. Leading the Memorial Service was PastGrand Master Craig Campbell, andafter the service Andy said to me,“When I die, I hope I rate two GrandMasters.”

To me, Andy was always readyto find good, despite the worstsituation. He always had a joke or awitty quote to make others smile orlaugh out loud. I was amazed, but notsurprised to learn that Andy workedwith so many various serviceorganizations.

I was not surprised, becauseover the years I watched how heworked with lodge officers and new Masons. He gave guidance, good advice, comfort, and joy as though he

had an endless supply. If anyone in thelodge had a question about protocol, orritual, or even how an event should beplanned, it was always the same: “Runit by Andy.”

Worshipful Masters Elect metwith Andy to plan their upcoming year. Past Masters consulted Andy about anyand all issues they might encounter. Appointed officers looked to Andy forinstruction on how to properly comportthemselves as lodge officers.

Andy’s life was service toothers. Whether in conjunction with alarger organization, or just one-on-onewith someone who needed help andguidance, Andy showed us all what ittakes to be a brother to our fellow man.

In the days ahead, I will lookfor Andy in those who, like me, havebeen inspired to live their lives inservice to others.

MESSAGE FROM THE EAST

Walt Smith, Worshipful Master

My Term for Worshipful Master will be comingto an end in just a couple of months. As I look back on thepast year, it has been challenging, but also rewarding thatthose challenges were turned into accomplishments.

Sitting in the East is a very special time, one I willlong remember. I have been very fortunate to have beenin the company of so many talented brothers. All yourhelp has been much appreciated. As a lodge we all bringdifferent talents to the table. This helps to create a lodgethat can move forward with our changing times.

Let’s give the support to our new WorshipfulMaster so that he too can have a very good year in 2011. Once again I want to thank all the officers and brethren ofthe lodge for all your help this past year. I feel veryfortunate to have served as your Worshipful Master.

From the Secretary’s DeskHope all are doing good. Most of

you, my brothers, have received your dues

statements. There has been a seven dollar

($7.00) increase for per capita tax which

brings the total dues to $71.00. The deadline for paying your

dues is December 31, 2010; WHY WAIT–PAY NOW.

Also, now is a good time to add to the dues, a tax

deductible contribution to the GW 1776 Masonic Fund, through

which we help so many worthy charities. Please consider our

Masonic Appeal.

I would like to thank the many of you for your help with

our flood disaster. We have a ways to go, but with your help

we’ll get the building in good order. Thank you again.

thank you to our Junior Warden, Chuck Carroll, editor of this

newsletter for his laborious job of putting this together; plus the

others who make it happen, especially Brother Past Master Dan

This is the seventh in a series about Masonic

Temples no longer being used for their original

purpose. These abandoned and reclaimed

structures remain memorials to our glorious past.

Dedicated to this quest, the author investigates the

Lost Temples of Wisconsin. -ed.

The first European settlerscame to the Menomonee Falls area in1842 and the first physician, DrSamuel Clark, a Mason from NewYork arrived in 1848. In 1871 DrClark and other Masons met topetition the Grand Lodge ofWisconsin to form a Lodge in theMenomonee Falls area. LincolnLodge#183 was chartered in June1872 and Dr. Clark was the firstMaster.

Lincoln Lodge met in acouple of rented halls until itpurchased the Emanuel Ladies Hallin1913. In 1950 Lincoln Lodge builtthe Temple on Main Street. By 2005the old Lodge building was sold andLincoln Lodge now meets in Sussex.

In 2005 the old Temple wascompletely gutted and converted intothe Lincoln Lodge Apartments. Thestreet facade has not changed at alland still retains the Square &Compasses over the front door."Masonic Temple" can be foundalong the roofline carved in stone.

The sides of the building nowhave windows and balconies andgarages have replaced the parking lot.This is the first Temple I have foundthat was turned into apartments andthe developers have done a terrificjob of retaining the look of theoriginal building.

much time at the lodge and tells youthat you "live at the Lodge" take heron a trip to Main Street inMenomonee Falls where you canliterally "live at the Lodge!"

WHITEFISH BAY, WIGW1776 Lodge has been

meeting with Prince Hall brothers forSaturday morning breakfasts for sometime now as the Masonic BrotherhoodCouncil Breakfast. On October 16 ,th

the brethren met at the Silver SpringMasonic Center instead of arestaurant. Brother Joe Pronnet, PMand Master of Aurora Lodge, cookedup a fabulous breakfast of eggs,bacon, hash browns, juice and coffee.

Jim Roberts and MarkTruesdell helped in the kitchen anddining room. The breakfast wasattended by brothers from manylodges including: GW1776 #337;Milwaukee Harmony #261; South'Shore #3; West Allis #291; Laflin St.James #247; Lake Lodge #189;Blazing Star #4; Corinthian #5; TrueSquare #11; Aurora #30.

Over time, since the GrandLodge of Wisconsin adopted a racialnon-discrimination provision to theMasonic Code of Wisconsin in 1972,small steps were made which finallyresulted in mutual recognitionbetween Wisconsin Free and AcceptedMasons and Wisconsin Prince HallMasons in 1990.

The regular breakfasts are anopportunity to share friendship and

brotherly love as a “brotherhood ofman under the fatherhood of God.”

Laurel Oaks Visit Holds“Jobie” Surprise

paid a visit to Masonic residents atLaurel Oaks on September 15,2010. After a light supper, thebrethren were treated to aninformative talk by the facility’smanager, Sharon Scherr, whocoincidentally is a Past HonoredQueen of Bethel 5 of Job’sDaughters.

Sharon talked aboutMedicaid and the rising cost oflong-term care and assisted livingcosts. She pointed out that mostpeople are ill-informed about long-term care and emphasized theimportance of seeking informationfrom qualified sources.

Bethel 13 Update

BURLINGTON, WIOn October 13-14, the

Supreme Council of Job’s DaughtersInternational presented a YouthProtection Program (YPP) to trainadults interested in working withJobies as Certified Adult Volunteers(CAV). Four adults from the Bethel13 Guardian Council attended theprogram, and after their backgroundchecks have been performed, theExecutive Guardian Council will becomplete and plans can move forwardto recruit and teach girls.

The Executive GuardianCouncil for Bethel 13 consists of:Bethel Guardian, Judy Paradowski;Associate Bethel Guardian, ChuckCarroll; Guardian Secretary, BarbCarroll; Guardian Treasurer, KathyCormany; and Guardian Director ofEpochs, Dorothy Cigale.

Joint Table Lodge Draws Many LodgesWHITEFISH BAY, WI

Upon returning from going dark, Walt Smithand Joe Pronnet, GW1776 & Aurora WorshipfulMasters, respectfully, planned a joint table lodge for thetwo lodges that share the Silver Spring Masonic Center.

The evening festivities began in the EnteredApprentice Degree, with dinner and conversation. Br.Tony Busalacchi was invited to give a presentationregarding his service to our nation’s veterans at the VAHospital. He then proceeded to tell every joke everwritten about Masons!

After dinner, the table lodge was conducted withseven toasts, made mostly by members of GW1776. The two lodges hosting the event were outnumbered byso many brothers from other lodges.

Lodges represented at the event included: Aurora No. 30; George Washington 1776 No. 337;Waukesha No. 37; Freemasons No. 363; MilwaukeeHarmony No. 261; Lake Lodge No. 189; Union GroveNo. 288; Wilmot No. 241 and a brother with dualmembership from Unity No. 362 in Kenoshaand Fidelitas No. 830 in Karlsrue, Germany.

Also in attendance, Grand Lodge Officers:District 12 Deputy Bob Strader; Grand Lecturer KennethGorgon; and MWGM Joe Harker.
