Meeting Notes - June 26th, 2012 by Dennis Parsons

Rotary Anniversary:Harley Lee - Jun 30 (8 yrs), Mike Burnham - Jul 01 (11 years) President Daryl: announced that there will be an inter club golf tournament at the St. Eugene golf course. This will take place on September 9th. More details to follow. President Daryl - read a Thank you card which the club received from our Sam Steele Sweetheart - Brianna Kennedy. "Thank you so much for being my sponsor!! I have appreciated your support so much these past few months, and I know I had the best sponsor! You have all been so much fun, it made the early wake ups worth it! Next years girl is a lucky one! thank you so much again!" Anne Beurskens- advised the club that the annual Friends of The Library book sale will take place during the last week of September. Anne will miss the last portion of the sale and would like someone to take her place in co-ordinating the clean-up, etc. Colleen Bermel on behalf of Emily was looking for things to keep Emily busy, as she is finished school and will be departing for Taiwan on July 24th. Until then, any club member going anywhere or doing anything that might interest Emily, please think about including her. Julie Nish will be returning home on July 15th from Taiwan, Brenda Kolenbrander will be back from Indonesia on July 4th, Brittany Blackmore has already returned from India. President Daryl announced the winner of the House Boat Certificate. The successful, and the only bidder, was Colin Campbell. Congratulations Colin - enjoy cruising the Shuswap.

Guest Speaker by Dennis Parsons

Emily Huang was our guest speaker. Emily gave us an interesting presentation on her year to date, in Canada. Emily has experienced many new and interesting things, and she has made some good friends during her exchange year. Some of the

highlights of Emily's experiences were skiing, snow boarding, dog sledding, making snow angels, Young Life, the school choir and touring with the district students to the Tri Cities district 5080 conference, to name a few of her endeavours.

New Member Proposal by Dennis Parsons Melanie McFarlane is proposing the following for Active membership: Bre Tironese - Legal Assistant - Rella & Paolini Activities that would enhance consideration as a Rotarian: Love my community and want the best for it; am very happy to volunteer for community oriented projects; current President of the Kootenay ICE Green Bay Committee, a committee partnered with the Kootenay ICE, the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group and Rella & Paolini to promote the importance of the ICE and the WHL to our region â€“ involves yearly projects such as Early Bird, School Spirit Nights and the Reach Out Program; was on the Cranbrook is Hockeyville Committee in 2010; was on the Faith Night Committee for both years in which this event has been held; am very active in my church (secretary for four committees including the United Church Council). I am organized and willing to step up and help out whenever possible. I am very passionate and want to help our City be the best it can be. If you have any concerns regarding this proposal, please contact one of the Sunrise Board members.

President Daryl Richardson acknowledged the dedication of our Past President Frank Vanden Broek by presenting him with the Past President's pin.  He also presented President Elect Mark Pinnell with the pin of his office as he prepares for his 2013-2014 year.

Sam Steele Days 2012 by Robinson, Dick

I would like to thank all those members who showed up for a shift(s) at our concession again this year. It was a fun filled weekend and relatively rainless so all those who were there had a

grand time. I would like to thank several members for their support in this, Bill & Shirley for their painting, gathering of utensils and getting the place ready and working shifts. Also Bob Bjorn who came for the set up on Friday, stayed for the afternoon, worked a shift on Sat. and showed up for cleanup. Also Percy who showed up for several shifts and worked at the bbq he bought for the club.

I would have a tie for top honors to my wife Jeannie & Dennis. Jeannie was always two steps ahead of me and did a lot of behind the scenes work collecting food and cherry picking all the stores and worked several shifts. Dennis volunteered to load the shift schedule, apply for the Health Board Permit, showed up for set up and worked that afternoon until close at the Ball park. He opened Sat. morning and again worked the whole day/evening. He came back on Sunday morning and stayed the whole day and also stayed for clean up. Such dedication but muchly appreciated. I see why he got the Service above Self Award this year. Thanks so much Dennis. From past years we know it takes about $3500 to stock the concession with buns/pop,meat, freezies, coffee etc. and hasn't changed much. Our Gross sales were around $5500. so our net sales were just under $2000. I overspend (on purpose) to get most of the food supplies needed for Canada Day so most of the money in that day will be profit. We were down about $2000 from 2 years ago. The weather was not the hottest (according to freezie sales) and that also touched on pop sales. There may also have been a lingering on factor from the people who ran the concession last year as many were not happy with him and his skeleton staff. We will be dropping chicken next year (if we get the nod to take it over again) as it is too hard to handle when the rush is on and too much of it is thrown away (overcooked) and it carries a high price tag.

One thing we may want to consider, so I will plant the seed now, is that we could take a long look at also taking over the concession at the Quads. We would have to work like the JCI's and work long shifts so at least two shifts per member as the sales there would be way more than at Moir. We thought Percy's ranger was great for

running product back and forth but it is not as good as a golf cart for trying to sell extra product, although due to the weather not many were buying in the coolness. If

anyone wants to see the total breakdown of costs, Jeannie did up a spread sheet which shows what we

bought, what we paid and an accounting of all monies.

Also what was nice to see was all the younger crew we had show up for different shifts. Many of them former YE students and/or Sam Steele Sweethearts or candidates. Such as Joy Friesen, Amy Morrison, Jessica Bermel, Rachel Wright, Mallory Balfour, Jenny Byford and Emily. Thanks again to all of you for the support and all the laughs we had. This has to be one of the best Public Relations jobs we do in the community and the money is just a bonus to put towards all our fine projects. Great job one and all. See you all after Ryla...

Parking for Grad by Richardson, Daryl

In support of the Mount Baker Secondary School graduation events, 10 Sunrise volunteers put in 2-1/2 hours and assisted in parking approximately 400 vehicles. Now keep in mind 350 of these vehicles appear in the matter of 30 minutes. All drivers were greeted at the first check point by Anne and Antoine. All of them made it through safe and sound though. Sometimes I think you could have large signs and/or more volunteers directing traffic and you would still get some of the drivers not knowing which way to go. No accidents, no injuries and from the comments on the radios fun was had by all of us. Even the weather contributed some sun.

Oh ya and let me add we even had an ex-RCMP in the first parking lot. It may have been a good thing he wasn't carrying his pistol.

Canada Day at Moir Park by Gibbon, Bill

Canada Day at Moir Park was once again a great success with large numbers turning out for an evening of musical entertainment, fast food, community awards, kids' games, and a great fireworks display. Sunrisers were in the thick of the action with President Frank taking a lead role in organizing the

event, second-in-command Todd Pellerin supervising concession operations, and club members doing their share at the concession and with clean-up operations. A job well done and a very successful community event. Thanks everyone!
