Grades 7th –12th remain in worship every week.
A Leadership Program is available for grades 7th-12th to help with the Sun-day Morning Program. Youth must Pre-Register to be a leader.
During our worship service, a slide will indicate that children and youth (leaders) may depart for morning program. After worship, parents can meet with their children in Sponsler Hall.
Parents with infants and small children:
Currently we are unable to offer childcare or educational classes for children
under the age of four years. We invite young families to remain in worship
and use our break room if needed, which is located near the front doors. You
are still able to see and hear the worship service!
There are baby changing tables in the bathroom in sanctuary near the entrance and in the education wing of Sponsler Hall.

The Power of Myth JOSEPH CAMPBELL WITH BILL MOYERS
MODULE 4 – SACRIFICE AND BLISS
Facilitated by Bob Watkins and Robin Parsons
Just before his death, Joseph Campbell a professor at Sarah Lawrence for 38 years and a lifelong student of religions and myths across the world – completed film-ing the monumental PBS series The Power of Myth with Bill Moyers. In this 8-module program based upon the video series, we will journey with Bill Moyers as he learns about the common myths, ceremonies and ritu-als that Campbell discovered in his journeys around the world.
In this fourth module we will discuss
the following questions:
What is a sacred place? How do we find one?
Chief Seattle of the Suquamish Tribe tried appease-ment to protect his people and land from encroach-ment. You may remember the letter to the US Con-gress that was attributed to him. This letter pleaded for Congress to respect the Native American way of life and the sanctity of their land. Why might Native Americans have been so connected to their land?
What is the impact of an environment on a society’s perceptions, relationships and mythology?
CENTER FOR SPIRITUAL ENRICHMENT SUMMER – FALL 2018 EDUCATION SESSIONS 16 Weeks! Beginning Thursday August 2—November 15
First 8 weeks from August 2 – September 20: Morning Module Only
When cultures changed from hunting to cultivating plants, how did their understanding and mythology of death and resurrection change as well?
What truly drives some individuals to sacrifice their own lives to save the lives of others?
In Sinclair Lewis’ Babbit, a satirical novel about the pressures of social conformity, the main character late in his life exclaims “I’ve never done a thing I wanted to do in my whole life!” How can we en-sure that we don’t ever say this ourselves?
Join us this August 23rd from 10:00-11:30 as we begin the third leg of our journey into understanding myths and their powers upon religions, individuals and socie-ties.
MYTH Frederick Buechner
THE RAW MATERIAL OF A MYTH, like the raw material of a dream, may be something that actually happened once. But myths, like dreams, do not tell us much about that kind of actuality. The creation of Adam and Eve, the Tower of Babel, Oedipus—they do not tell us primarily about events. They tell us about ourselves.
In popular usage, a myth has come to mean a story that is not true. Historically speaking, that may well be so. Humanly speaking, a myth is a story that is always true.

COCOA BEACH COMMUNITY GARDEN
Bob Watkins has informed us that
there is an opportunity for our
church to obtain a garden plot in
the new Cocoa Beach Community
Garden at the Ramp Rd. Park. The
4X8 raised bed plot will be free of charge to us and the
fruits (or vegetables) of our labor would be used to pro-
vide homegrown goods to a food bank (The Central Bre-
vard Sharing Center takes fresh produce donations) or
some such idea as that. This is a call to those who feel
compelled to participate in an urban gardening ministry
journey and see what grows.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN COCOA BEACH:
THE CBCC THRIFT SHOP We often forget how much our Thrift Shop does for the community. Here is a reminder of how much good is generated and how many people benefit from our little shop. Each year dozens of pairs of eyeglasses are contributed to the Lions Club. Used cellular phones have been donated to the Veterans Memorial Center for their Phone cards for Troops Project. Uniforms are donated to both Girls and Boy Scouts. Bedding, linens, and animal related items are saved and do-nated to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Department for use with their Paws and Stripes Program. Each year when needed we are able to help out the cold weather ministry with donations of warm coats. Many items are given to those experiencing homelessness and those in our community who needed specific items. Formal dresses were donated to Devereux for their annual prom. Children’s clothing was donated to children in need at Roosevelt Elementary school and the Abused Women’s Center Shelter. Costumes and clothing that may be used as costumes were donated to Surfside Playhouse in Cocoa Beach. Am Vets pick up all those clothing items that we are unable to sell at the shop.
Besides all these donations thousands of dollars are donated each year to vital local charities such as: Brevard Sharing Center, Cross-winds Youth Program, Salvation Army Abused Women Shelter, Aging Matters, Seafarers Ministry, and the Brevard Rescue Mission for Women and Children.
We are grateful for all the volunteers who give their time each week to the Thrift Shop. You are making a big difference here at CBCC and in the lives of so many others in our community. THANKS!

Join musicians from your Space Coast Sym-phony Orchestra as they present a FREE concert featuring three stunning chamber works of Cambini, Ravel, and Beethoven.
Beethoven's Sextet in E-flat Major, Op.81b is a passionate piece for two virtuoso horns and string quartet. This rousing chamber concerto is full of rousing hunting calls and fanfares.
Maurice Ravel’s incredible String Quartet in F Major seems all the more impressive when one considers that Ravel was only twenty-seven when he wrote it. The pro-gram is rounded out by Giuseppe Cambini's String Quintet No. 1.
The UCC is a welcoming, justice-minded
Christian community. At a time when religion is
too often portrayed as narrow-minded and exclusive,
many are raising their VOICES for an alternate vision:
Here God is all-loving and inclusive

place in your lobby or community center that pro-
vides space to leave brochures.
CBCC has a great postcard that can be used for in-
formational display. If you would like to take a hand-
ful to display or to give to friends please ask Linda
Griffin or Coleman Todd.
CHURCH SURVEY We are thankful for all those who have picked up a sur-vey and taken the time to respond to the questions. We have received nearly 50 completed surveys so far. Sur-veys have been available in the narthex or during the week copies have been in the church office. The survey was also emailed to the congregation and mailed out to snowbirds. Copies are still available! Return to church office or in the box marked “survey” in Sponsler Hall, or scan and email to: [email protected], or return by mail to: 126 S. Atlantic Ave. Cocoa Beach Florida, 32931.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM OPEN AND AFFIRMING COMMITTEE
TONIGHT. . . we will be holding our last educational seminar in our Open and Affirming Process. There will be a light meal at 6, and the discussion and sharing begins at 6:30; The topic for the evening? “And Now…the Rest of the Story.” The primary focus of the evening will be two stories, Cindy Johnson’s and Bruce Douglas’ Their stories will help us understand the “Why” of a church being ONA as well as the “Who”. We will wrap up the evening discussing the “What.” What does it mean to be Open and Affirming. We hope that you will join us on the next Sunday even-ing to learn more about this issue.
We have been in dialog in educational seminars since May concerning whether our church should officially become a UCC “Open and Affirming” church. That dialog will continue with small group discussions in September and Octo-ber, eventually leading to a vote of the congregation if our board decides that is appropriate based on feedback from our members in those seminars and discussions. Our congregation’s ONA Project Team believes that it would be helpful for you to have a better idea of what ONA is.
We offer the explanation below based on material from the United Church of Christ’s Open and Affirming Coalition:
Open and Affirming (ONA) is a movement of more than 1,500 churches and other ministries in the United Church of Christ that welcome lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) members. More than 350,000 members of the UCC belong to ONA churches.
After a time of study, dialogue, and prayer, churches adopt an Open and Affirming “covenant” committing their
members to welcome LGBT seekers, support their relationships, and advocate for their basic rights. All sacra-
ments and rites of an ONA congregation are available to LGBT people, including baptism, confirmation, commun-
ion, and marriage. ONA churches take seriously the Bible’s admonition to “accept one another, just as Christ has
accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.” (Romans 15:7 NIV)
Where the Church of Jesus Christ welcomes and accepts everyone as they are.
Where your mind is nourished as much as your soul.
Where Jesus the healer meets Jesus the revolutionary.
Where together we grow a just and peaceful world.

FELLOWSHIP HOSTS MAKE A DIFFERENCE! Meeting and greeting friends and visitors after worship is a
great part of our Sunday morning experience here at CBCC.
Every week it is our pleasure to wander over to Sponsler Hall,
grab a cup of coffee and a snack, and chat for a while before
heading off for our week. This time also provides us an oppor-
tunity to meet new people visiting our church.
Sign up to host our fellowship! Just one time makes a
difference. Although you are welcome to bring something
special, snacks are already there. Set-up and clean-up is
the main task.
This is a great ministry
for couples or two friends
who love to entertain.
