The clouds lifted just in
time for Team Cam-
bridge’s flagship event,
the Ron Edwards Memo-
rial 10 mile time trial.
This year, the event was
relocated from the E2/10
to the other side of town,
on the F2/10d on the fast
but less congested A428.
The start sheet was lack-
ing a few of the big
names that have graced
the event in previous
years; some of this was
due to a moderately well-
publicised time trial tak-
ing place in France on the
same day. We are told
that our chairman Tony
Clarke was consulted be-
forehand…
Conditions were about as
good as one could wish for,
with a light north-easterly
breeze and little traffic.
The marshals were happy
to risk getting sun-tanned
for the first time this year,
and the facilities at the
new Cambourne village
hall were well-placed.
Never one to be overawed
by the situation, the
youngest competitor in the
event (by several decades,
in most cases) Danielle
Parker beat her own P.B.
and the club record again
with a time of 27:09.
Mum Angie was not con-
tent to watch on the side-
lines, posting a time of
26:47, just shy of her P.B.

an article for the Spokes-

Regrettably, he
reports that his trusty
tripewriter is still full
of mud and the bottom

Luckily, the Spokesman
has the resources to fill
the gap—by the wonders

Hi All,
Myself and my mother would also like to thank everybody for all their ef-forts in making the event a success that it is every year.
Special thanks especially to Tony and Sue for organising this every year and the hard work involved.
Although I no longer cycle competitively it is always very nice to turn up and see everybody.
It is also very nice to see that that Team Cambridge never loses its direc-tion as a club, in that it is a very sociable club for everybody of all levels and does not have the elitism that quite often occurs in other clubs. I think that this is something that would have pleased my father immensely as it is this that I think drew him to the club in the first place.
Once again thank you everybody. Nick and Val Edwards
Club campaigner Trevor
Avis fell foul of a late
start to record 25:24,
while regular Wednesday
racer Lex Burch of
Cambridge CC posted a
quick 23:29.

year, but I also slipped a place from
18th to 19th, so perhaps I wasn’t
trying hard enough!
Luckily the trees on Duchess Drive
sheltered the riders from a stopper of
a headwind on the long uphill drag
out of Newmarket, and the home leg
was boosted by the cross-tailwind, to
keep up the tempo.
A brief indulgence in chat and a slice
of cake after the race, then it was
back to family life before midday!
This event isn’t for the clock-
watchers, but the hilly and twisting
circuit is the very definition of a
sporting course, and as a test of bike-
handling ability was well worth the
entry.
Nonetheless, there were only 35 en-
tries, somewhat less than the previ-
ous year, to be greeted with a strong
wind but thankfully, no rain.
Due to the wind, my time was a mi-
nute and a half slower than last

Some decent times resulted, but
only a couple of PB’s, from winner
Ralph Hancock and your scribe in
joint 5th place.
A group of bemused onlookers wit-
nessed Kaptain Kev’s growls of
anguish as he crossed the line, a
few seconds outside his target of 24
minutes.
Angie Parker was first lady home
with a creditable 27:00, but due to
Simon Denney’s absence, Shelton
leads the handicap standings with
yours truly joint second:
Woo-Hoo!
Independence Day brought another
fitting tribute to Ron, with an out-
ing on one of our faster courses and
an evening which although not per-
fect, was good enough to justify an
attempt on a decent time.
This route offers the chance to stay
on the fast A428 as far as the Mad-
ingley roundabout on the second
leg, returning to the finish on the
old (and bumpy) St Neots Road,
which is hard going but does offer
some shelter from the wind.

The Art of Sports Photography featuring Papa-Rat-See
Remember the days when your monthly edition of the Spokesman contained accurate journalism and high-quality photography?
Well, it ain’t easy, hanging off the back of a motorbike for 250km every day (especially if the owner doesn’t know you’ve borrowed it), so it’s a great relief to see the master return, like Mel Gibson is Braveheart, (only Scottish) this month:-

Following the recent controversy
regarding the use of modern technol-
ogy to enhance the performance of
cyclists in record attempts, the UCI
has convened and pronounced on its
deliberations:-
“With immediate effect, all qualifying
times to be valid must be based on the
rider’s beverage being served in a
white Styrofoam 5 fluid ounce beaker.
All other types or receptacle of any
cubic capacity, whether or not they
include aerodynamically streamlined
features or lightweight composite ma-
terials, shall be deemed invalid.
The intention of this ruling is to ensure
that competition is based on the ability
of the athlete alone, independent of
any assistance rendered by advances
in technology or equipment.
In the event of any query in interpreta-
tion of the specification, the vessel
shall be compared to the type used by
Eddy Merckx in his 1972 hour record
attempt.
For the purposes of identification, the
approved receptacle shall be named
the “Athlete’s Cup”, and any results
based on non-approved receptacles
shall be known as “Best Performance
Mugs” and excluded from the list.”
Students of cycling lore may be in-
terested to compare this event with
the great hydrogenated biscuit con-
troversy of 2006...
Readers will already be appraised of the genius that resides within our club: who else could create the most up-to-date and relevant website on the whole of the internet, while creating his own home-made LED lighting systems?
Well, our very own Paul “Magneto” Mil-lard has surpassed himself this year: while last winter saw the region steadi-ly becoming more and more desiccated, he took matters into his own hands, for the benefit of humankind.
Now, the Spokesman can reveal why our man has been driving to Wales eve-ry other week, which may or may not be connected to the fact that it has rained every day this summer.
To you, Paul, we offer our grateful thanks… ...but you can stop now!

Yes folks, this is your chance
to be a part of history!
The future is a blank page,
waiting for you to get out
your crayons and scribble.
Just in case you roadies were won-
dering whether a chain should be
replaced after 2000 miles, or eked
out to 2500, this pic was taken
before the start of Mountain May-
hem. (Kev’s typewriter is just out of
shot, bottom left).
Apparently the burger van is still
there to this day, with only a pair of
buns shining out of the mire…

Will it be a front-row view

victory in Paris (although
leaving it to the last lap was
cutting it a bit fine…), or

nearest TV screen showing
the men’s road race?
Or will it be yet another
memoir of bygone days, like
a sticky pub carpet?
Actually, there’s loads going
on at the moment, all I’ve
got to do is try to remember
what Lizzie Armistead’s mum
told me the day before the

Luckily, World War Three has been averted, as club chairman Tony Clarke thoughtful-ly remembered (i.e. was prompted by Sue) to raise
the blue and white colours of Cambridge CC against David McGaw’s name on the media screen, instead of the Benevolent Democratic Pedalocracy
of Cambridge (Popular Front) CC, at the medal ceremony in Cambourne Village Centre.
Sadly, this is possibly my last chance to fall foul of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Act (2006).
