APRIL 2021 Volume 24 Issue 4 THE FINAL WORD ON CIF By Tom Howlin There is misinformation being discussed throughout the community about the pending C ommunity I mprovement F und (CIF) projects. I would like to offer some final thoughts on the projects and to address some of the misconceptions. The board did not decide on the CIF projects, the community did through a couple of different polls. The fact that some special interest items were not prioritized by the community is just the facts of the matter. Perhaps in future projects, should these special interests be properly presented and promoted, they may well end up on a future list. Much is being made of the legal settlement that is in place regarding the courts and how it should be overridden by a change to the CC&R’s and even questioning why, in five years since the settlement, previous boards have not attempted to change the CC&R’s. The March agenda includes the topic of CC&R review where a motion will be made by this writer to form an ad-hoc committee to make changes to the CC&R’s – not just those relevant to the sport courts but to a number of other outdated items in our governing documents. A resident of Sunflower has agreed to chair that ad-hoc committee, if it is approved by the overall board. THE FINAL WORD ON CIF

By Tom Howlin

There is misinformation being discussed throughout the community about the

pending Community Improvement Fund (CIF) projects. I would like to offer

some final thoughts on the projects and to address some of the misconceptions.

The board did not decide on the CIF projects, the community did through a

couple of different polls. The fact that some special interest items were not

prioritized by the community is just the facts of the matter. Perhaps in future

projects, should these special interests be properly presented and promoted,

they may well end up on a future list.

Much is being made of the legal settlement that is in place regarding the courts

and how it should be overridden by a change to the CC&R’s and even

questioning why, in five years since the settlement, previous boards have not

attempted to change the CC&R’s. The March agenda includes the topic of

CC&R review where a motion will be made by this writer to form an ad-hoc

committee to make changes to the

CC&R’s – not just those relevant to the

sport courts but to a number of other

outdated items in our governing

documents. A resident of Sunflower has

agreed to chair that ad-hoc committee, if

it is approved by the overall board.

Please be aware that this requires

volunteer committee members, time to

review and rewrite and a 2/3 Yes vote of

all residents.

Continued from front page.

Another issue that people seem to ignore is the impact on our reserves. There are those

that completely ignore the admonition that is made on the very first page of the reserve

study every year: “The objective of your multi-year Funding Plan is to Fully Fund

Reserves….”. Not to fund them at 70%, 75% or anything less than 100% (or more).”

Overspending reserves reduces the overall percentage funded and thus, to FULLY FUND

reserves, we must ultimately get that shortage back from homeowners. Those who believe reserves funded at

70% is sufficient do not seem to understand that overall, we spend well over 100% of the amount reserved for

most projects. So, we spend more than 100% but some want us only fund to at 70% - does that make any kind

of economic sense to anyone?

And overspend we will, if CIF is turned down. The courts must be resurfaced and improved, and the cost is

$182,000 with only $114,000 reserved (based on a year-old estimate, it’s entirely possible that number has

increased significantly). You should not be asked to pay that money out of your individual pocket when the

CIF program was started just to fund improvements like this.

And the accusation that current home sales are being hurt by the court settlement limiting pickleball play is

even more disingenuous. Please ask any realtor how difficult it has been to sell a Sunflower home in the last

year. They will tell you that they only wish there was more inventory. No home has failed to sell because of

the lack of a specific amenity – a particular buyer may have walked away, only to make room for other buyers

that were lined up behind them.

Now, the overall condition of the courts can hurt housing values because people expect quality amenities in a

community like ours. It isn’t just the condition of the pickleball side of the courts, it is the condition of all the

courts that is critical to home values. Just as the condition of the pool is important to home values.

CIF will benefit the entire community. Even those that are going to vote no. If it fails, it does no one any

good. It took almost two years to poll the community, work up plans, get estimates, make presentations and

bring this to a vote. Do we really want to wait another two years to possibly bring forth other ideas? I hope

not.

Please participate and VOTE in the CIF election.

The electronic and paper ballot CIF voting closes on Monday, April 19, 2021 at 5:00 p.m.

COMMUNITY MANAGER

By Andrea Eisenhauer

Can you believe we are already a quarter of the way through 2021? I just have a few reminders for this month:

Semi-Annual assessments are due April 1st, if you have not yet paid your HOA fees, please do so. We do

accept checks at the Village Center. If you prefer to complete your payment on-line or through your own

bank, that will work as well.

If you have not yet completed your age verification form, please visit the Village Center with a valid ID for the

staff to verify, it only takes a few minutes.

Lastly, the CIF voting closes April 19th at 5:00 p.m. So remember, your vote is important. If you have any

questions, concerns or need any additional information on any of the above items, please do not hesitate to

reach out to [email protected] or 520-572-9780.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW COMMITTEE

By Jim Conley Co - Chair

By the time this issue of the Sun Catcher reaches you,

AAM will be doing inspections and you, if guilty,

may be receiving a reminder letter that you are not in

compliance with some rule. Please take a look

around the outside of your house for items that should

not be there and remove them. Bushes that did not

survive the winter without damage may need

trimming. With spring, comes weeds and they need to

be sprayed or removed in some way. Trash cans

should not be left out after pick up. These are all

violations that will be written up.

Just a reminder to old-time residents that ARC does

not do the inspections-AAM does them all year long.

ARC is responsible for home sales final inspections.

If there are violations found and they are severe

enough, the sale is postponed until the violation is

fixed. If you plan on doing any work around your

house, ALWAYS go thru ARC.

WELCOME TO SUNFLOWER, NEW

HOMEOWNERS!

By Liz Perry

Allow us to introduce ourselves. We are the official

Welcome Committee of Sunflower. One of our

duties is to make a call to your home; and if desired,

to bring a Welcome Bag filled with local maps,

coupons, etc. Normally, we would sit and visit with

you. But due to COVID-19, this is not possible at

this time. Please let us know if you would like to

have a bag dropped off at your home. We realize that

some of you may not even be in your home at this

time, due to the pandemic, so we can hold until your

return.

TOPICS OF SPECIAL INTEREST

ARTIST GALLERY

By Lori Chase

Our artist for the month of April is Ken Easton. Ken

and his wife Shirley have been Sunflower residents

since 2001. He submitted the following information:

“I was a professional musician for over 60 years--

performer, composer, arranger, producer and studio

musician in Hollywood. Seven years ago, I decided

to take a visual direction and added art to my creative

work. This is my sixth Sunflower “gallery”.

I am a “colorist” by definition, I employ pens and

pencils on paper. My expressive styles are influenced

by Marcia Baldwin, Terrance Guardipee, Johnathon

Harris and Charles Wysocki.

Each piece is priced at $100, including framing. We

will donate all monies to charity. In the past, 50

percent went to the American Cancer Society, and 50

percent to the Marana Community Food Bank.

This year, because of the devastating impact of Covid

-19 on area families, 100 percent of monies will be

donated to the Marana Community Food Bank.”

On behalf of the Sunflower community, I would like

to thank David Griffith for his wonderful watercolor

display-very colorful and soothing to look at and very

calming in this time of stress.

Our May artist will be Linda Weyer. She has put up

many art shows in the past and is a very talented

artist. Perhaps we will see some of her previous

works of art or something new. We will just have to

wait and see what she displays.

PRIMAVERA FOUNDATION

By Liz Perry

The Primavera Foundation provides pathways out of

poverty, through safe, affordable housing, workforce

development, and neighborhood revitalization.

Once again, I’ve been blown away by the generosity

of Sunflower residents, in donating to Primavera.

Since we started taking donations in November, five

carloads of donations have been driven down to

Primavera!

I’ve received a few phone calls about the prescription

bottles and the removing of the labels, as it is difficult

for some. Don’t worry about taking the entire label

off, or soaking them. You can use a Sharpie marker

to blacken out your information, if you have trouble

removing the label.

Right now, the biggest needs, in addition to toiletries

for both men and women, are ladies’ underwear, all

sizes. Gently used and freshly laundered are okay, as

long as there are no visible stains or tears. Please

continue to drop off items in the Primavera box,

located outside the front door of the Village Center.

BOCCE

By Ed Alsobrooks

As sad as the year has been, we have hope for the

future and look forward to better times on the courts.

Many of our Club members are fully vaccinated and

ready to play or soon will be. On the other hand, it

won’t be long before our snowbird members will be

leaving us again. Let’s hope by the time they return

we will be in full, member and guest, playing mode.

I wish I had news to share concerning the

refurbishment of the courts but the BOD is still

waiting on bids from contractors. It’s looking more

like the fall before we can have a grand reopening of

the courts with new red and white bocce balls,

renewed scoreboards and ball racks. Perhaps a party

to celebrate?

We are still looking for members who can help with

repainting the ball racks and/or painting and

renumbering the scoreboards. Materials will be paid

for or provided. Please let us know if you can help

rejuvenate our courts.

If you’re new to Sunflower or you’ve wondered about

the game of bocce, come and see us. We play on

Tuesday and Thursday at 1:00 p.m. We’d love to

meet you. We’ll teach you the game basics in one

session and introduce you to some fun and friendly

folks from your neighborhood.

If at any time you have questions about bocce or the

Sunflower Bocce Club contact either Ed Schaefer 668

-5037, Gene Wittmann 268-8446 or Ed Alsobrooks

638-5703.

We have scheduled our events through June. To

For those of you who are unfamiliar with our club,

we play twice a week (Monday & Thursday) at

various golf courses in the area (all the way from

Benson on the east to Tubac on the south to Casa

Grande on the north). If you enjoy the game and are

looking to make some great friends, come join us. I

can be contacted at [email protected] or

(520) 241-7676.

SUNFLOWER TENNIS

By Binki Thalman

Hello Tennis players-it looks like spring has sprung

and things will be warming up soon, although we can

wish it would stay as cool as it has been in March.

Please join us for a round or two of casual tennis or a

couple of sets of scheduled doubles, if you’ve signed

your Covid-19 waiver and turned it in. All skill levels

are welcome, whether you’ve played a lot recently, or

a beginner interested in learning or would like to

refresh skills you had in the past. In April, our

starting time will be 8:00 a.m. for both scheduled

doubles and drop-in tennis.

For scheduled doubles, contact Beth VanBlaricom

(email address below). Also please contact Beth if

you’d like to play drop in and she will include the

information in the schedule; there haven’t been many

players “dropping in” due to Covid 19, and we feel it

would be better if anyone choosing to drop in knows

if there will be other players available.

To sign up for Scheduled Doubles, drop-in

availability, or tennis questions in general, please

contact Beth VanBlaricom:

[email protected]

If you have a chance to stop by the tennis courts,

please take note of our newly updated display case.

This month’s tip includes advice on what to do with

old tennis balls. Thanks to Marie for her work on

this!

Please participate and VOTE in

the CIF election.

The electronic and paper ballot

CIF voting closes on Monday,

April 19, 2021 at 5:00 p.m.

PING PONG GROUP

By Buzz Hoffmann

We are scheduled to play ping pong on the patio

Wednesdays from 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.

I would like to have one table for players wearing

masks and one table for players not wearing masks.

This will ensure that all of our players have an

opportunity to play. You must bring your own racket.

Since we are only playing singles, we will most likely

play 11-point games to keep things moving along and

to minimize sitting time. Players will rotate off after

playing two games consecutively. Of course, this

will depend on how many players we have.

ACTIVITES & CLUBS

CRAFT CLUB By Jeanne M Collins

The Craft Club normally would resume meeting in

October, but because of the virus it’s unknown at this

time when we will start up again. I’m looking

forward to the day we can once again get together to

work on projects, have fun and enjoy each other’s

company.

We might be on a break but are always on the lookout

for new craft ideas. If you come across a project that

you think we might enjoy, bring it to our attention.

We welcome everyone interested in learning a new

craft. The Craft Club meets every Monday (When

approval is given to meet again) from 10:00 a.m. to

12:00 p.m. If you wish to join us, the annual fee is

$5.00.

SUNFLOWER HIKING CLUB

By Leilani Lyons

Yes, Virginia, there is a Sunflower Hiking Club.

Normally, we would have scheduled a hike for each

Tuesday and Friday. But these are not normal times.

We are not planning any group hikes until it becomes

safe for us to resume carpooling and we can assure

we will be able to maintain a proper distance from

each other on the trail. The hike leaders will

continue to assess conditions and will be scheduling

hikes when it is safe to start again. In the meantime,

if you would like to be added to our hiking club

mailing list to get immediate notice direct to your

inbox when hikes begin, send an email to:

[email protected].

SUNFLOWER GENEALOGY SOCIETY

By Paulette Weiser

“I Found the Record, Now What?” Suzanne Young

Brayer, history and psychology teacher and a

longtime genealogist from the Phoenix area, will talk

via Zoom about what you do after you have found a

record of an ancestor. You scan it looking for the

desired fact, find it, accept it, and put it in your family

tree, right? Not so fast! There are many questions we

need to ask about the document and its information

before we can be assured that the information is

accurate. She will talk about how to analyze the

evidence found. How is that analysis done? This

presentation will demonstrate with examples and

questions how to look critically at a document and the

evidence it holds to ensure its accuracy at the meeting

at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 20, 2021.

In addition, SGS will have its second Treasure Hunt

drawing for members. The Treasure Hunt winner will

have the advantage of the group’s mentors and

librarian combining forces for an all-out attack on a

brick wall or a particular line of research to assist in

the winner’s family research. Any member attending

the meeting is eligible for the drawing to be the

Treasure Hunt winner, so be sure to attend with the

link to the Zoom meeting. See you there in a square!

For information, call Membership Chair, David

Vanosdoll at 843-345-4744.

SUNFLOWER TRAVEL CLUB

By Frances Gauthier

There are a number of trip ideas that the Travel Club

Board has discussed. We are waiting until it is safe to

travel and the venues have reopened to actually make

plans. We’re hoping that possibly by late fall things

will be somewhat back to normal.

We will eventually be having a Membership Meeting

but there is no date set yet. At that time, we will be

asking for volunteers to fill several Travel Club

Board positions. Most of the current Board has held

their positions for several years. Please consider

joining the Board. We actually have a good time.

SUNFLOWER SOCIAL CLUB

By Frances Gauthier

The Covid vaccinations have been more readily

available, so hopefully most of the Sunflower

residents have received at least their first dose. This

should help with the eventual reopening of the center

for social events. We will keep you informed when

we finally get to plan our first event.

QUILT CLUB

By Pat Blazick-Peterson

One year of changes. Yet let us look at the last year.

Last March everyone’s daily routine changed. We

mourned and discussed what we can do – we figured,

fairly-early, that COVID-19 was going to be around

for a while. The Quilter’s adapted and continued

sewing and quilting pieces for donation to the

Community. We changed from gathering at the

Community Center and sharing in the Craft Room to

going to ZOOM meetings. Separate rooms but

together in seeing each other and talking to a screen.

On Wednesday we enjoy learning techniques, about

tools or a new pattern by watching quilting videos

with discussion afterwards. Each Thursday morning,

we hold one monthly General Meeting and then just

to get together to talk. And each Friday morning to

sew together. Separate but together by screen. Just

like the Craft Room.

We have learned to go digital, how to feel connected

by screen and polished up on getting our group

paperwork digitized. Always learning! We still love

to get together and hope that will come back with the

furious schedule of vaccinations.

If anyone is interested in joining our fun, please

contact Pat Blazick-Peterson at:

[email protected]. Get vaccinated, stay

healthy, wear masks and sew, sew and keep your

battery charged for any tablet or computer to stay

connected!

SUNFLOWER COMMUNITY

VETERANS CLUB

By Richard Long

Thirty years ago saw the cease fire for Operation

Desert Storm. Some of our memberships were

actively involved in this conflict. What was it about?

Operation Desert Storm, also sometimes referred to

as the Gulf War, was the enforcement stage of

Operation Desert Shield, which began August 2, 1990

with the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq. Desert Storm

was the Military Operation announced by President

George H W Bush on January 16, 1991. Its purpose

was to expel occupying Iraqi forces from Kuwait.

Iraq had invaded Kuwait and actually annexed it the

prior August. The US lead a coalition of thirty-five

nations (the largest military alliance since WWII) and

placed over 900,000 troops in the region, mostly on

the Saudi-Iraq border. Upon the expiration of a UN

declared deadline for Iraqi withdrawal, the coalition

forces began a period of bombardment of Iraqi

command and control targets. Forces quickly drove

Iraq from Kuwait and when they continued advancing

into Iraq, a ceasefire was reached within 100 hours.

Coalition casualties were in the hundreds but Iraq

sustained losses numbering tens of thousands. This

conflict also marked the first-time live news

broadcasts came from the front lines, primarily by US

network CNN.

Wednesday, April 7th at 0930 is our next regularly

scheduled club meeting. We will continue to use

ZOOM for our meetings.

VINTAGE GARDENERS

By Marie Van Huis

Folks on every block have been busy

planting and sprucing up their yards,

especially the Vintage Gardeners and friends. We’re

running a photo contest about blooms of cacti and

other succulents growing at our homes. Details have

been sent out to members’ email addresses on record.

We are still in need of a new president and hope we

can soon “dig up” a new leader; the other officers are

all returning. Any recommendations will be most

helpful! Please notice that our emails will be from

“VIN GARDENERS,” which is a nom de plume for

whomever takes the lead.

And please check out our spiffy new link in the

Sunflowerliving.com website (Resident

Information>Clubs and Groups>Vintage Gardeners).

Former president Shirley Bailey designed and filled it

with news, helpful resources and a calendar of

upcoming events.

Come grow with us! Contact Teresa Lanier at 878-

members are only $5, with a rollover for currently

paid-up members.
