Two veteran YANEO artists, Bob Frank and Gary Adams, have been bringing the wonder of music to children in Northeast Ohio for over 50 years. Learn how the students, schools and music has changed over the years from Bob and Gary’s rich and deep perspective.

Bob Frank Bob Frank is a Cleveland native and has been a teaching musician with Young Audiences for over 27 years. He plays the guitar, harmonica, banjo, mandolin, and dobro (a resonator guitar). In addition to his work with YANEO, Bob plays in an 8 piece jazz band called Blue Lunch.

YANEO: How has YANEO changed over the years?BF: In 1981 there were 11 artists on the roster, all of them classical musi-cians. And back then YANEO was just a two person office. Marsha Dobryznski has totally transformed the organization since she assumed the Executive Director Story continued on page 2

Gary Adams

Gary Adams grew up in Cleveland, went to Cleveland public schools through 8th grade and attended Shaker Heights High. In 7th grade Gary was asked to play with the band. The fantastic band director, Ralph Tiniano, said he needed someone to play tuba. He agreed and was soon hooked. Gary has been with Young Audiences since 1975 and has been performing with the Metropolitan Brass Quintet since 1981.

YANEO: How have students and schools changed over the years? GA: I’m not sure that things have changed. It seems like there is less money

for the arts in certain areas that we serve. But interest in the arts has remained consistent. Radio and popular music have such an impact on things and that hasn’t changed since the ‘80s. And I don’t think the students have changed much, either.

YANEO: Why is what you’re doing important?GA: Music takes kids places that they’ve never been – we give them a spark of appreciation for this great body of classical music that they may not know about. They have fun with it, and I hope that it stays with them. Most people get only popular culture. We want to present this whole body of glorious classical music as well as Jazz that they can appreciate all their lives. A lot of pop stuff is good and fun, but I think it’s important for people to be exposed to all things positive and classical music is all positive.

position 14 years ago. YANEO has diversified beyond classical music and has attracted all kinds of artists; the board has grown, and there is a whole new level of competency in the organization.

YANEO: How have the schools and students changed?BF: When I started, the city of Cleveland schools purchased programs and paid for our work. Now there is little money for programming, so funding has to come from other sources. 25 years ago when I asked a group of kids what a banjo was, everyone knew what I was talking about. Now kids can choose to watch popular music videos or whatever they want on TV and they are not getting exposed to anything else. Now when I ask kids what a banjo is, hardly any-one raises their hand. That’s why it’s more important than ever for our children to have arts and performers of all kinds come to their school.

YANEO: How have your programs changed?BF: We used to just do a performance and expose kids to music. Now we integrate other aspects like math into the programs, and we not only do performances but also residencies and classroom teaching. Next year I am bringing a new suite of programs, including one called “Roots to Rock” which will be an assembly program that gives the history of rock and roll.

YANEO: Why is it important for kids to hear your music? BF: I bring an understanding of musical and social history and traditions to kids. I think it’s also important for youth to realize that you don’t have to play in a band or perform – it is fun just to make your own music for yourself. Music is important for students because it gives them a sense of who they are.

Stocker Foundation Supports Literacy in Lorain CountySupported by a generous grant from The Stocker Foundation, students at Garfield Elementary School in Lorain par-ticipated in several workshops aimed at improving literacy through arts programming. By involving the students in a fun and interactive play about the alphabet, Young Audiences theater artist Jonathan Graham taught them about sounds and letters.

Garfield’s principal Mrs. Carol Zacovic said of the program, “This is great enrichment that is so beneficial to the kids. They are so engaged, and the Young Audiences programs are aligned to the Ohio Academic content standards.”

The project exposed students to the rich history of animation and music that makes cartoons so engaging. The residency programming met curricula needs and also introduced students to an industry with multiple career opportunities. Students designed a storyboard with the visual artist and selected accompanying music with the guidance of the computer keyboardist. The finished product was a DVD with a 6-8 frame storyboard complete with a 30-second musical score.

Seventh and eighth grade mathematics teacher Cedric McEachron enjoyed observing his students participate. Mr. McEachron noted that “the students are excited about the program. Both artists related well to the kids. The arts play such a vital role in education. Even if they don’t grow up to be musicians, the arts make them think and be creative.”

After School Programming Partnership Brings the Arts to StudentsStudents at Charles Dickens Elementary have the opportunity twice a week to participate in an after school program that keeps them engaged and learning. YANEO and other community groups offer programming through a partnership with Mt. Pleasant Community Zone’s Out-of-School Program. We continue to reach an increasing number of students as A.J. Rickoff Elementary School was added to the program this year.

Young Audiences artist Carol Lynn Mitchell worked with a group of second grade students to create a number of innovative art projects. After one class, she noted, “the students created beautiful birds…they were able to use their imagination (and patience!) to create birds out of pine cones.”

Some of the programming offered to students includes:

Visual arts with YANEO artists Bonnie Dolin, Wendy Mahon, and Carol Lynn Mitchell

Movement and leadership training with Dance Africa Dance

Reading skill reinforcement with Vision of Change through Spellmaster tools

Training in leadership and school skills with the Neighborhood Leadership Institute

A dance workshop with YANEO artist Desmond Davis

Theatre arts with YANEO artist Jimmie Woody

YANEO To Work With Consulting FirmExpanding Reach to More Children in Northeast Ohio

YANEO is excited to announce that Community Wealth Ventures Collaborative selected the organization to participate in its 10 month program in Cleveland. The multi-step application process was very competitive, with over 20 other local non profit organizations applying.

Community Wealth Ventures (www.communitywealth.com) is a Washington, DC based firm that helps non profit organizations become more self-sustaining by generating revenue. With the help of the Collaborative’s experienced consultants, YANEO will develop a business plan to expand its reach to all counties in Northeast Ohio (in the past, YANEO has provided services mainly in Cuyahoga County and the adjoining counties).

By expanding its services, YANEO will become closer to achieving its vision of bringing arts education to every child, every day in Northeast Ohio. Growth in services will also bring increased earned income, which will enable the organization to gain greater stability and sustainability.

You won’t want to miss this opportunity to support Young Audiences while enjoying a great evening of food, entertainment, and dancing.

Two veteran YANEO artists, Bob Frank and Gary Adams, have been bringing the wonder of music to children in Northeast Ohio for over 50 years. Learn how the students, schools and music has changed over the years from Bob and Gary’s rich and deep perspective.
