What is a subject?

The subject of a sentence is the person, place, thing, or idea that is

doing or being something.

Look at the subjects highlighted red below. What do they tell about the sentences? My dog follows me everywhere.We run together in the field.My sister and I take him for walks down our street.

Challenge:Work with a partner. Brainstorm a list of subjects that could be found in sentences. How many can you list in 2 minutes? Go!

What is a verb?

The Verb in a sentence is a word that shows action or a state of being. The verb

tells what people or things do or are.

Making them AgreeA verb in the present tense must agree with the subject of the sentence. They must both be singular or both be

Use your list of subjects and your list of verbs to make sentences. They can be silly

or serious sentences. Be sure to use singular subjects with singular verbs AND

plural subjects with plural verbs.
