The streets were packed in Hilton Beach, with near perfect weather, for their annual Community Night Saturday. Like Richards Landing’s Community Night last week, attendance was great at the similar, yet still uniquely different, night. The parade saw people filling every spot of sidewalk down Mark’s street and beyond.

The Hilton Beach Farmers Market, Hilton Beach Tourist Park and Hilton Fire trucks were just some of the floats, as well as many that had made an appearance the week

before in the Landing. Of course Fort St. Joseph was back and the ever popular Mathews Memorial Zombie float among others. Lots of other people showed off their creativity, covering their pickup trucks and other vehicles with homemade decorations and signs. There were even some super heroes and one float straight out of the 80s. MPP Michael Mantha still had Frisbees to toss to happy kids and was even ready for 4 legged non-voters with dog treats in his pockets. He was not the only parader to notice cute dogs intently watching them

If you only go to one of the community nights each year we encourage you to check out both next year, regardless of where you live, or if you live in neither townships. Both Community Nights are a good time and while you may not see as many people you know on the other side of the island, you’re sure to run into many familiar faces and have some good carnival-style eating. If you missed the Hunters and Anglers deer tales, you have just one more chance this year for the tasty treats at Harvest Fest next month. Pulled pork has become our favourite in Hilton Beach, but there were plenty of other options, even frozen yogurt which is uncommon around here we might add.

lawns long lines of kids and those looking to win something for kids (or grownups) packed the games. Summer is winding down, but there is still lots of summer fun to be had.

Summer at the Hilton Union Public Library

Summer is always busy at the library and so far this summer we have indeed been busy! With the book return box usually full, the kid’s toys being picked up a couple times a day and stacks of Inter library loans (requested books on loan from other libraries) arriving from our wonderful post office it makes for busy days.

At this time of year our daily number of patrons runs between 30 and 40 people, with some days getting as high as 50. Not bad for one of the smallest libraries in Ontario!

Continuing through the summer is our FREE IT Drop-In. This year it is being offered twice a month on Monday evenings. The dates are advertised in the clippings and on our library Facebook page. Please don’t be shy to use this program if you live anywhere on the island. For its continued success we need you to come out with any tech questions relating to your tablet, cell phone, and laptop. Things we can help you with are dealing with your electronic pictures, using social media, arranging your phone con-tacts and much, much more!!

A special event we try to run every summer is a craft program for kids. This year we ran it Wednesday mornings from 10am to noon. All total we had 29 kids come out for the 4 days. This summer we made stamped fossils out of a salty flour dough mixture (which the kids made themselves), weaved matts out of cattail leaves, weaved fish out of willow and made paint (out of egg yolks and natural dyes) and paintbrushes (out of sticks and a variety of plants) and then painted gorgeous paintings. With great help, who leant their creativity and imagination, it was truly a success! This month’s Free Technology Drop-In will be held Monday August 13th and 27th from 7-9pm. Katydid

Sometimes called a bush cricket, katydids are long horned grasshoppers that dominate the sounds you hear at night. They’re nocturnal, and their mating calls at night you hear that sound like “Katy did, Katy didn’t” are produced by their forwings rubbing together.

Katydids are masters at camouflage, they’re usually bright green and their wings are shaped like leaves, though some colour morphs such as yellow and pink have been reported. They are rather large for members of the cricket fami-ly, and if you live in Malaysia they can grow to the size of your hand. They are poor flyers and some species of katydids don’t fly at all, rather flap their wings in between jumps.

Katydids are found all over the globe, on every continent except Antarctica. In climates with seasons, they usually only live one year and produce one generation of offspring. In hotter climates, they can live for several years and pro-duce two clutches of offspring per year.

Algoma - The 15th Annual Algoma Traditional Music, Dance, and Heri-tage Arts Family Camp (AlgomaTrad 2018) is tuning up for an inspiring week of workshops, concerts, dances, and heritage arts, all happening in Richards Landing on St. Joseph Island, for all ages. The camp runs from Sunday evening, August 12 to Saturday morning, August 18. Check out complete information about AlgomaTrad 2018 at http://algo-matrad.ca/camp/. Full Camper registrations are full and now closed but Day Camper classes without meals are still open until Aug. 9th.

Several evening events are open to the public including the outstanding Staff Concert, which is scheduled for Tuesday, August 14, 7:30 PM at the Centennial Grounds in Richards Landing. Admission at the door is $20, children 10 and under free. Featuring over 15 world-class musi-cians, the Staff Concert line-up will include:

Virtuoso Canadian fiddler Tom Fitzgerald, 2012 Canadian Grand Mas-ter Fiddle Champ and member of the renowned fiddle and stepdance family group, The Fitzgeralds (thefitzgeralds.net);

Cape Breton fiddler Dan MacDonald (www.danmacdonald.org), who recently released his new CD Urban/Rural to a sold-out audience at Hughes’ Room in Toronto;

Kyle Waymouth,4-time Canadian Open Champion stepdancer and multi-instrumentalist, in fact one of the greatest stepdancers in the world, who tours with The Fitzgeralds and international sensation Step Crew;

Citizen Jane (citizenjanemusic.com) - featuring songwriter Reenie Perkovic, a semi-finalist in the 2016 UK Songwriting Contest, accom-panied by one of AlgomaTrad’s favourite musicians on fiddle and viola, Lea Kirstein;

The O’Schraves - local musical heroes and award winning family music group.

Other than personal for sale ads the announcement must be of value to the community. We reserve the right to decide if the ad is of service to the community.

Ads or announcements for non-residents or items or services, to be sold for profit, or generate income or events charging an entrance fee (which includes “not for profit organizations”) as well as items valued at over $1,000. will incur a nominal charge of $10. plus HST. We reserve the right to determine if a fee is required. We reserve the right to edit down to 50 words or less.Business or commercial ads, including those placed by individuals do not qualify as Classified ad or Public Service Announcements. Such advertising must be via display advertising, governed by our published rates in effect at that time.

Classified Ads and AnnouncementsAds or announcements will appear in one issue, but may be repeated, at your request (space permitting).Advertiser must resubmit ad each week.
