Events in the summer of 2016 are scheduled as follows: ● Friday 8 July and Saturday 9 July in Woolwich● Saturday 9 July and Sunday 10 July in South Norwood● Saturday 9 July and Sunday 10 July in Kingston● Saturday 16 July and Sunday 17 July in Ilford● Saturday 23 July in Leyton● Saturday 23 July and Sunday 24 July in Twickenham● Saturday 23 July and Sunday 24 July in Tooting

The project launched in July 2015 with a spectacular percussion-induced bang and it continued in the autumn of 2015 with a broad programme of EFG London Jazz Festival artists, established local artists and amateur local artists from the boroughs. All sorts of businesses and spaces have transformed themselves into venues for performing artists; from libraries to shopping malls, shoe shops to charity shops, big brands, independents, cafes, pubs, restaurants, churches, kids’ spaces, department stores, empty units, town halls, and not forgetting outside on the streets themselves. Aims of The StreetsThe Streets has a number of key objectives:

● To create a series of dynamic cultural events focused on the high streets of 7 Outer-London boroughs that positively impact on local businesses and residents.

● To provide tangible opportunities for high street businesses to showcase their USP and explore ways to attract new customers.

● To programme high quality artists in less obvious performance spaces such as shops and cafes on thehigh street.

● To offer fun and exciting opportunities for local residents and visitors to explore the local heritage and stories of the high streets.

● To offer participatory workshops and cultural activities to local residents, community groups and artists, and to proactively involve them in the project.

● To tap into and showcase the pre-existing local artistic and creative scene as part of The Streets’ events.Summer 2016 EventsAcross 7 boroughs in July 2016 a vibrant celebration of vocal music will take place focusing on discovery, participation and spectacle. Two main themes will shape events in each borough:

● Performance times: when suits you and will work with the flow of your customers throughout the day.

● Performance space: where works best to enhance and not disrupt sales.● Technical requirements (technical equipment will be kept to a minimum).● Health & Safety (see below).

Your producer will stay in touch with you throughout the lead-up to the event and ensure you have all the information you need.

Hosting a performance – on the daySerious will have a production team on the high street managing all performances and events. They will allocate a venue manager to your business who will coordinate all aspects of the performance:

● Getting in any equipment required.● Organising the artists.● Briefing with your staff when necessary.● Helping clear the performance space if required.● Ensuring the space is safe.● Leaving things in good order at the end of the event.

17Kingston The Streets 2016 Info Pack

Health & SafetySerious will risk-assess your business space before the event to ensure it is suitable for a live performance, and your input into this is welcome. Scenarios that need to avoided include:

● Overcrowding● Blocking of the emergency exits● Trip hazards e.g. wires lying around● Electrical hazards e.g. amps with damaged plugs● Reducing access to the toilets

Serious will live risk-assess the event as it’s happening to ensure all activity remains safe to the public and your staff.

Maximising your gainThe more you put in to The Streets, the more you’ll get out of it. Here are some suggestions to get the most from your Streets experience:

● If you run a restaurant or café, create a The Streets menu to accommodate ‘short stay’ customers wanting a snack and drink during the performance.

● Offer discounts or special promotions to customers with a The Streets flyer during the event. These can be advertised on The Streets website and, subject to space and print deadlines, on the flyer.

● Word of mouth is one of the best marketing tools around: ensure your staff know what’s going on and get them to tell regular customers, friends and family about events, spreading the word as widely as possible.

● Display The Streets flyers and posters in your business and use your own digital networks and website to publicise the event.

● Engage with The Streets on social media (see below).

EvaluationWe want to know how effective the Streets is in fulfilling its objectives as well as your own, and will be collecting as much data on the project as we can. Our evaluation includes:

● Short questionnaires for businesses to fill out before and after The Streets events.● Short questionnaires for audiences to fill out on the day of The Streets events.● Any useful information, quotes, anecdotes, stories and sales info provided by the participating

businesses on how The Streets has impacted on them, whether it’s brought new customers, what they’ve got from the experience, whether sales increased etc. This feedback can be hard data or more informal reviews – it’s all useful! Businesses will have questionnaires delivered to them before and after the event – please do fill them out. The information you provide is invaluable and helps us create meaningful feedback to the project’s funders and partners, as well as your local community. If your business has measures in place for quantifying footfall and spend and / or other data, please let us know if you are willing to share this. A team of people will be organising audience questionnaires on event days and engaging the public to get their feedback. These questionnaires will be available in all venues and we encourage businesses to be proactive in distributing them to customers, where this is appropriate.
