Apparently, you can’t go alone. You have to be in cahoots with someone. I’ve also never been in Cognito. I hear no one recognizes you there!” Did that joke make you laugh? Maybe chuckle? Perhaps even crack a smile? If so, it may have improved your health! More and more studies are showing that laughter benefits us both physically and mentally. When you read that joke just now, your muscles relaxed slightly, which relieved tension. Your levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, dropped. Your body released endorphins, the feel-good chemicals that are associated with happiness and contentment. If you had a hearty laugh, your blood pressure may have dropped slightly and your heart rate increased, helping your body improve blood circulation. You also felt good afterwards, which for many is the most powerful effect of laughter. When you’re having a bad day, it’s often the person who can make you laugh that you turn to. When faced with a difficult or uncomfortable situation, finding the humor in your predicament makes it easier to deal with. People who can laugh through the good times and the bad are generally happier, healthier people. A seven- year Norwegian study found that people who had a sense of humor experienced a 20% lower mortality rate in comparison to those who did not. Perhaps one of the most beautiful things about laughter is its ability to connect us with one another. When we laugh with someone, we open ourselves up to them. Poet Pablo Neruda once said, “Laughter is the language of the soul,” and we agree. Our caregivers and residents can often be found laughing together – whether it’s during a fun card game, a hilarious movie or activity, or just something silly they saw or said. At our campus, we value the power of laughter as well as those who are willing to share laughter with others. If you’re one of our campus residents or family members, you probably know a caregiver who goes above and beyond to share a laugh, listen to a concern, or do anything in their power to Laughter Looks Good on You 2525 DeMille Boulevard Lapeer, MI 48446 Phone: 810.245.9300 Fax: 810.245.9301 www.stonegatehc.com The Stonegate Sentinel July 2018

Welcome New Residents The Stonegate Health Campus Team would like to welcome all our new residents and their families to our campus and a place to call home. We are looking forward to serving your loved ones in their daily needs and making new memories each day. We take pride in our services and hope we can meet each resident’s needs. Please let us know how we are doing, so we can make a difference in our resident’s lives!

Greetings from Stonegate Health

Campus! I hope that your summer is off to a great start, and that you’re enjoying the weather with your friends and family. Many of us take these relationships for granted, but their impact on our health and wellbeing cannot be overstated.According to many studies, socialization is key to maintaining, and even improving your mental health. This is one of the reasons why we offer the seniors we serve so many opportunities to mix and mingle with their neighbors, their community, and the people they love. This year we’re taking our socialization opportunities to the next level with the Trilogy Travel Club! Through the Trilogy Travel Club, our residents have the chance to visit exciting destinations while still receiving stellar care from the staff they know and love. Next

month we’ll be visiting Mackinac Island in Michigan. If you haven’t booked your spot already, contact a member of our campus team! We’re also excited to announce that we have a new program designed to provide our residents not only the chance to socialize, but to exercise their brains! Our BrainFIT program encompasses education, nutrition, sleep, exercise, and stress reduction, and it’s even endorsed by John B. Arden, PhD and author of the Brain Bible and Rewire Your Brain. Talk to a member of our Life Enrichment team to learn more about the benefits of this amazing program.I hope that you have a wonderful July, and that you stop by for a visit. We look forward to seeing you!Yours in Service,

Taste of TownStonegate Health Campus looks forward to bringing in the taste and spirit of many local restaurants in Lapeer to our residents. Taste of the Town is a monthly event where the campus choses a local restaurant and arranges for a favorite meal to be brought to the campus for the residents to enjoy. Our next Taste of the Town will be sponsored by Old Detroit Burger Bar on July 31st. If you are a local restaurant or know of a local restaurant owner, please reach out to our director of dining services.

Happy Helpers! Here at Stonegate, we love our volunteers! We have many opportunities available to come out and share your time with our lovely residents. Volunteers can help with craft groups, cooking groups, attend outings, call bingo, or provide visits with our residents. The residents love meeting their neighbors from the community and having to opportunity to chat with who will be visiting with us for 10+ hours a week! Chad and Cole have helped pitch in anywhere they can, calling bingo, teaching resident’s to play Chinese checkers, and even delivering the mail! We are so lucky to have such generous gentleman giving back to their community!

Hats off to our Veterans We led many Veteran inspired activities this May. First, we visited that Vietnam traveling wall. The wall was being hosted at Ray Cs Harley Davidson. We had the opportunity to escort three of our veterans here at Stonegate to see the attraction. Next, the local VFW came and did a gun salute for our residents. Everyone gathered around the flag pole and paid tribute to those who have served. On Memorial Day, residents incorporated waving flags during their exercise group, made cards for Veteran residents, and had a patriotic sing-a-long. We are eternally grateful for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice so that we can continue to enjoy the many freedoms we have been afforded
