Special thanks to our facilities workers and custodians for the monumental task of moving tons of snow. For these dedicated individuals, there is no such thing as a “snow day.” A special thank you also goes to all of our community members for working diligently to ensure that sidewalks and walkways were cleared. Hopefully, we can put away the snow shovels for another year. I’m happy to announce that work has begun on the upgrades to our internal courtyard. Over the first few weekends in March, we will be installing a stone paver patio. This patio will be the base project as we transform the courtyard into an outdoor classroom. Future additions that are being considered for the courtyard include landscaping, outdoor tables and seating, creation of a habitat for Monarch Butterflies, and a vegetable garden. Congratulations to our winter sports programs on an outstanding season. I am very proud of the way that our athletes represented us both inside and outside of competition. Good luck to our spring sports programs as they begin their season. A reminder to staff and students that we will have a school-wide early release on June 13 at 1:00p.m. This early release will allow staff and students ample time to travel to GMU in time for our graduation ceremony that afternoon at 4:00 p.m. I apologize for the inconvenience. The arrangements for the 4:00 graduation ceremony were finalized prior to exams being cancelled. Lastly, I hope that everyone has a safe Spring Break. This especially applies to our students and staff traveling to visit our sister-school in Beijing, China, Beijing 109. After making the trip last year, I can attest to it being one of the top experiences of my life. I am very proud to have Stone Bridge students represent our school on a global scale. Matt Wilburn

Principal’s Notes After the record breaking snow in February, I think

I speak for everyone when I say that I am ready for spring. Special thanks to our facilities workers and custodians for the monumental task of moving tons of snow. For these

dedicated individuals, there is no such thing as a “snow day.” A special thank you also goes to all of our community members for working diligently to ensure that sidewalks and

walkways were cleared. Hopefully, we can put away the snow shovels for another year.

I’m happy to announce that work has begun on the upgrades to our internal courtyard. Over the first few

weekends in March, we will be installing a stone paver patio. This patio will be the base project as we transform the courtyard into an outdoor classroom. Future additions that

are being considered for the courtyard include landscaping, outdoor tables and seating, creation of a habitat for Monarch Butterflies, and a vegetable garden.

Congratulations to our winter sports programs on an outstanding season. I am very proud of the way that our

athletes represented us both inside and outside of competition. Good luck to our spring sports programs as they begin their season.

A reminder to staff and students that we will have a

school-wide early release on June 13 at 1:00p.m. This early release will allow staff and students ample time to travel to GMU in time for our graduation ceremony that afternoon at 4:00 p.m. I apologize for the inconvenience. The

arrangements for the 4:00 graduation ceremony were finalized prior to exams being cancelled.

Lastly, I hope that everyone has a safe Spring Break. This especially applies to our students and staff traveling to

visit our sister-school in Beijing, China, Beijing 109. After making the trip last year, I can attest to it being one of the top experiences of my life. I am very proud to have Stone Bridge students represent our school on a global scale.

Minute of Silence Virginia Law requires schools to start the day

with a ‘minute of silence’. The law allows for different

uses of the minute so that “each pupil may, in the exercise

of his or her individual choice, meditate, pray, or engage

in any other silent activity which does not interfere with,

distract, or impede other pupils in the exercise of their

individual choice.” The law also specifies that “all pupils

remain seated and silent and make no distracting

display…” We will begin our announcements with the

following statement, “As we begin another day, let us

pause for a minute of silence.” Following the minute of

silence, we will conclude with the Pledge of

Allegiance. Please discuss this law with your students

and help them understand that the expectation is for

students to remain quiet.

Change of Address If you moved recently, please provide the new

information to the Counseling Department. The Change

of Address form is located on the Stone Bridge website

under the Counseling Office, General Information link.

This form and proof of residency should be submitted as

soon as possible. Proof of residency consists of a signed

lease, deed, settlement papers, mortgage statement or deed of trust and a current utility bill. If you have any

questions please call the Counseling Office.

Bell Schedule Regular, 1-Hour and 2-Hour Delay bell

schedules are listed on a full page towards the end of this

newsletter. Please refer to this should LCPS adjust the

school day due to weather.

Parking Lot Information Student Drop Off/Pick Up – Traffic in our

parking lot presents many challenges and issues. For

everyone’s safety, we ask that you drop students off and

pick them up only in the front parking lot. Please do not

drop students off in back of the school as this presents

safety hazards and the area is not designed for that

purpose!

Extended parking is not permitted in the bus

loop at any time before or after the school day. According to the Fire Marshall, the Bus Loop is

considered a roadway due to its width, and there is no

parking allowed in a roadway. Exemptions are buses

and emergency vehicles.

Please do not park in the surrounding

neighborhoods. Towing is a possible consequence for

parking in private townhouse and business parking lots.

Parking Permits All applications must have complete car

information, parent signature, and payment via cash or

check at the time of submission. Online payments must

also have an application turned in to the front office. The

fee for a parking permit for 2015-2016 is $200.00 for the

school year or $100.00 for each semester. Parking fees

are not prorated. A limited number of daily passes is

available for a small fee per day.

Applications for the second semester may be

picked up in the main office or found online. Students

are reminded that spaces are assigned and parking in

any non-designated area is not permitted.

Please note that parking is a privilege and

students must remain in good standing to remain eligible

to drive to school.

PROCEDURES FOR OBTAINING HOMEWORK

DUE TO ABSENCES: Parents/guardians or students

should call the Counseling Office by noon on the second

day of the absence to request homework when the absence

is expected to last three or more days. This will help ensure

that work will be available by the end of the third school day

to be picked up in the counseling office.

STUDENT WITHDRAWAL PROCEDURES: The

parent or guardian of the withdrawing student MUST

notify the Counseling Office of the student’s impending

departure and obtain a “Withdrawal/Transfer Form”

from the counseling secretary at least three days in advance

of the planned departure. The parent/guardian is required

to complete and sign the form and return it to the

Counseling Office. The signed form will be given to the

student during his or her last two days of school. The

student will walk the form through the building obtaining

teacher signatures, withdrawal grades and returning text

books and library books. All books must be returned to

avoid a deficiency. Lockers MUST be cleaned out and PE

locks returned to the PE teacher. Before leaving on the last

day, the student will bring the completed

Withdrawal/Transfer Form to the School Counseling office

for processing.

MILITARY INFORMATION: Representatives from the

different branches of the military visit Stone Bridge

monthly. They set up in the College and Career Center to

meet and talk with students about military careers and

educational choices.

individually in February to review course selections and

make adjustments. All course selections will be finalized in

StudentVue on March 18, 2016. After this date, changes

will need to be made through the counseling office.

Scholarship and Financial Aid The 2016 Financial Aid and Scholarship

Directory is available in the Career Center. The College

through the LCPS and Stone Bridge website.

The Free Application for Federal Student

Aid (FAFSA) is the government’s form used to

determine if a student qualifies for certain grants,

federally funded work-study or low interest loans. ALL

families should complete this form online. Many merit

scholarships and Loudoun based scholarships require

the completion of the FAFSA. Students and one

parent/guardian are required to obtain a PIN before their

FAFSA can be completed. Go to www.pin.ed.gov to

request your PINs.

Updates to Phone/Email Contacts

If you need to update contact information, you

can easily submit the update request online through the ParentVue link on the website. Once the request has been

returned checks.

Food Deliveries to School

Students may not order restaurant delivery. If

parents deliver lunch to their students, please avoid

drinks in paper cups. The risk of a spill in the front office

is too great!

line move quickly. You may pay in the school cafeteria

with cash or personal check made payable to “County of

Loudoun”.

You may also pay via the internet. These must

be made in 20-lunch increments. My School Bucks will

add a 6% handling fee. Follow these instructions:

1. Log on to the internet at

http:///www.pay4lunch.com. 2. Follow the instructions on the screen.

The Stone Bridge Booster Club is conducting

the Spring Mulch Sale to benefit our Spring sports teams.

The Mulch Sale is the primary SBBC fundraiser of the

season and student athletes earn money for their team by

participating in Mulch Sale order form distribution and

in the mulch delivery that will be scheduled in early

April. The SBBC Volunteer coordinators will work with

SBHS Spring sports teams and coaches to schedule

athlete participation for both events. Order forms are

available online and at the school.

SBBC also reminds Spring season parents to get

involved in volunteering. Parent volunteers earn money

for their athlete’s team through the SBBC VIP Program

– which pays $10 per volunteer shift worked directly to

SBHS teams. SBBC also depends on parent volunteers to

ensure continued SBBC operations and funding for

Coach’s Requests. Volunteer sign-up information for can

be found in the Booster section of

the stonebridgesports.org website.

Free-Refill Cups for $5. Get free drink refills all school

year and 100% of cup sale proceeds go back to SBBC to

support SBHS Athletics.

Please see the Senior class webpage for full details.

SBHS will dismiss all other students at 1pm on June 13

involving the Class of 2016, please check the Senior

Class web page or contact advisor Shelbie Morgan:

Project Graduation is an all-night party hosted

by Stone Bridge parents for our graduates to celebrate

this important milestone, and to keep our graduates safe.

The party is held at Stone Bridge on graduation night

from 11:30pm – 5:00am and is attended by close to 80%

of the graduating class. There are games, raffles, prizes

and even a casino! Feedback from seniors has

consistently described the party as totally awesome and

one of the best times they’ve ever had at SBHS!

This is one heck of a party and we need

Freshman, Sophomore and Junior parents to "pay it

forward" and help with the planning. To make the party

a success, the PG Committee meets monthly throughout

the year to plan fresh ideas for each graduating class. We

are in search of folks to serve on committees, help with

fundraising, as well as to volunteer for set-up,

chaperoning, and clean up after the party.

There are many ways you can help!

Graduation 2016. Prices go up as the year goes on.

The Project Graduation party

requires over 100 volunteers. Email

Project Grad is an important, well-loved

tradition at SBHS and one that we want to be sure

continues for all of our students. We cannot make this

happen without your help! Please get involve today.

Library News Hours: 8 a.m. – 4:30 a.m. Mon. – Thurs.

8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays.

This month we celebrate Women’s History

Month, the Fine Arts, Teen Tech Week and award

winning books to tie in with the popular Academy

Awards ceremony.

Bulldog Readers, our student book club, will

meet on Friday, March 4 during all lunch shifts. Students

can bring their lunch to discuss Manga, graphic novels

and comics. There will be treats!

Overdue and Lost books:

Parents, do you see your students’ library books

in their rooms or cars? If so, please encourage them to

renew the books if still needed or return them so others

may enjoy them. We have many books that were checked

out in September and not yet returned. There are no fines

for overdue books.

Library Space Update:

We would like to thank the SCA and the PTSO

who have provided funds for us to do some student

requested updates to our space. Our library T.A.G group

also completed several fundraisers to support the

improvements and we were awarded a Loudoun

Education Foundation Grant to create a Reading Zone

enjoyed by students. On the February 5 teacher workday

over two dozen students volunteered to complete a

myriad of tasks to help repurpose and renovate the space.

Additional support came from our football team who

helped move some shelves for us.

Our next steps are to have some tables retrofitted

with wheels to make the space easy to adjust for classes

and parent group meetings, replace worn chairs, and add

a painted mural and quote to our walls. If you have time,

talent, or money to contribute, we’d love to hear from

you.

Stop in and see our more flexible and student

friendly space the next time you are here.

To keep up with library events, please follow us

on Twitter (Bulldog Librarians @sbhslibrary) or

Facebook (Stone Bridge High School Library) and check out our website often.

Attendance Policies 2015-2016 All absences and tardies must be called in to

the attendance hotline: 571-252-2202. This is a 24 hour

line that takes messages only. Please call each and every

time your student(s) will be out of school or tardy.

Excused Absences: Excused absences include

personal illness, death in family, medical or dental

appointments, court obligations, and religious holidays.

Prearranged Absences: Must be approved by the

administration (ex: college visits or family vacations).

Forms can be picked up from the attendance office.

Early Dismissals: Please send in a note with

your student prior to the dismissal time. The student

should take this to the attendance window to receive a

pass to leave class at the approved time.

Parents are expected to call if a student is going

to be absent or tardy to school. The number for

the hotline is 571-252-2202.

The attendance office will call parents to verify

absences, tardies, and early dismissals.

When students accumulate five unexcused

absences during the school year, a parent

conference will be held.

When students are absent from school six

unexcused days, the students will be required to

submit a doctor’s note for additional absences

for the remainder of the school year.

When students are absent from school seven or

more unexcused days, the parent and student

will be referred to the Truancy Officer.

schedule doctor appointments for their ISR dates.

Students scheduled in ISR are not allowed to participate

in any extracurricular activities until the day after they

are released from ISR.

Tardy Policy to School: Students are expected to be on

time to school and to class. Students with excused tardies

to school due to a doctor, dental, or judicial appointment

Early Dismissals: Early dismissals will be granted in the

event that a student must leave school to go on a verified

doctor, dental, or other medical, counseling or court

appointment. A note from home is required stating why

the student must leave school, what time the student

needs to leave, and a telephone number for the parent

approving the dismissal. The student’s name, grade, and

student ID should also be clearly stated on the note.

Calls will be made to verify all notes. If your

child has an on-going medical condition which will

require frequent dismissals from school, please call your

student’s guidance counselor and/or contact Mrs. King in

the attendance office. Frequent dismissals without a

medical explanation will be under constant review by the

attendance office and counselors. Students must be

signed out prior to leaving.

Clinic Information The clinic’s direct line is (571) 252-2215

If your student has any significant medical needs,

please notify the nurse even if the school has been

notified in previous school years. If your child has

diabetes, seizures, life-threatening allergies, asthma

or uses an inhaler, you should pick up forms for you

and your physician to complete so the school can

understand and address your student’s needs. If the

student was in Loudoun County Public Schools last

year, these forms were sent to you at the end of

school in June.

A parent or guardian must deliver any

medication (prescription or non-prescription) to

the school office or clinic. Students should not

transport any medication to or from school. Parents are responsible for picking up unused

medication. If a student mistakenly brings

medication, he should turn it in to the clinic

immediately.

The nurse must have written instructions from

the physician in order to administer prescription

medication.

These instructions should include:

Student’s name.

Name and purpose of the medication.

Dosage and time of administration.

Possible side effects and measures to take if they

should occur.

End date for administering the medication.

Parent signature-giving permission to

administer medicine and to contact student’s

Physician.

Physician’s signature.

A copy of the special “Medication Form” that should

be used is available on page 20. It is suggested that

you keep it for use should the need arise for your

student to receive prescription medicine. Additional

forms may be obtained from the main office or

clinic.

All prescription medicine must be in the original

pharmacy bottle with the proper label containing the

name of the student, dosage, and instructions for

administration. If you ask, the pharmacy will give

you an extra bottle with the proper amount of

medication for school.

If the nurse needs to give non-prescription

medication:

It must be in an original package with the name of

the medicine and instructions.

The nurse must have a note from the parent regarding

when and how much medicine to administer.

The nurse will only give the amount listed on the

package for your student’s age and weight and for

the recommended length of time the student should

receive the medicine unless she has doctor’s orders

on a medication form that indicates otherwise.

The nurse cannot administer medicine that is not in

its original container.

Students who have fevers should be kept at home

until free of fever for 24 hours.

All 10th graders and students new to Loudoun

County Public Schools will be screened for vision

and hearing during the first two months of school.

Parents will be notified of any concerns.

Be sure to keep the “Emergency

Information” up-to-date so that we can reach

you if your student is ill or injured.

Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is the only medication

supplied by the school. The nurse must have written

parental permission in order to administer this

medication. Please be sure that the Tylenol permission

information on the emergency card is completed and that

your signature is on the form. Because Acetaminophen,

in large amounts, over a period of time, can cause liver

damage, the nurse will give only 4 doses in a 4 week

period. Before a fifth dose is given, the parent will be

contacted.
