THE PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGEOnce again we are approaching the end of an acadennic year and we shall
be saying good-bye - au revoir might be more appropriate - to our 14 Grade8 graduates. They have represented our school well and have madedramatic strides over the past couple of years as they completed their
education at SHS.Yearbooks are a crucial part of a school's history. They itemize the
special flavour of a year and encapsulate many of the particular momentsthat made the year a success for so many. This fine yearbook records the
achievements of our students and captures the spirit of our community. Asyou read it, 1 invite you to reflect on SHS and realize to what extent it has
grown and matured into a solid and proud preparatory school.
The year 2000 is nearly upon us. Our graduates go to their secondary
schools with our very best wishes and the knowledge that we shall see themagain. Good luck to you all and congratulations to each one of you, for
brought to SHS and all that you will contribute in the next stage of your

THE HEAD BOY'S MESSAGEI came to The Sterling Hall School in 1993 when I was eight years of age
and four foot four. Now it is 1999 and I am fourteen years of age and six foot
four. Along with the increase in my age and height, I have experienced an
increase in brainpower as well. My head is full of scientific tables, world maps,
French verb conjugations and English literature.
At one time in my life, I believed that I was the one person in the world
who could not do one thing right, but these last six years have proven that
belief to be wrong. SHS pushed me to keep trying and to keep succeeding,
until I felt confident enough to realize that I could do anything.
I believe SHS has touched each and every person connected to it, in someway. It may be small, it may be large, but whenever we are feeling low or
lacking confidence Sterling Hall School is always there.
I have enjoyed being your Head Boy and would like to thank the students,
faculty and staff at SHS for their support and, of course, my parents. I will miss my little friends in the
primary grades, but plan to catch up with them each year on Alumni Reunion Day in October.

FOUNDER'S DAY/TERRY FOX RUIS
On Founder's Day, students, staff, faculty, family and even family pets,
came to school ready to take part in the annual SHS Terry Fox Run. After
a rousing round of House cheers to get the adrenaline flowing, followed
by a group warm-up, we started running. Everyone was very enthusiastic
and worked hard, running and walking as many laps as they could. With
money being raised for the Terry Fox Foundation and House points
being earned with each lap, spirits were high. Thanks to the hard work,
a record amount of $20,000 was raised for cancer research. Congratu-
lations to all! And a special thanks to Mr. Bertram for organizing the
event.

COMMUNITY SERVICEWe were inspired to begin an active and useful year of community
;ervice by the profound words of Nelson Mandela at the memorable Sky
'ome event of September 25'^. "The spirit of Ubuntu - that profound
frican sense that we are human only through the humanity of other
luman beings - has added globally to our common search for a better
A/orld." Since then, students throughout the school have devoted their
ime and energy to projects including singing for the elderly, sewing
hristmas stockings and making decorations for a youth shelter,
:ollecting coins for UNICEF and food for food banks and making school
supply kits for children in Malawi, Africa. Congratulations to Tyler
ostman and the Student Council representatives for their excellent
eadership. Thank you also to the teachers and parents for continuing to
elp us make Community Service an important part of The Sterling Hall
School education.

REMEMBPWMCE DAYOn November The Sterling Hall School went to Yorkdale
Secondary School for our annual Remembrance Day Service. The
service began at 8:55 with a flag procession conducted by the Grade
8 class. In all, over half the student body performed in the service itself,
and the entire Sterling Hall School community, including students,
faculty, staff and parents took part in the morning's remembrance. Ahighlight of the service, was Rahim Ismail's performance of "The Last
Post", on the alto saxophone. The service ended with everyone in
attendance singing "Let There Be Peace On Earth". Thanks to Mrs.
Van Dolweerd and everyone else who helped us to remember the
importance of peace.

I'm Tired
I am really, really tired
I want to go to bed
I put my covers under meWith my pillow on my head
I tried to sleep at midnight
And no one made a peep
Except for a little mouseAnd so 1 couldn't sleep
I started counting numbers
Then started counting sheep
And then said my A, B, Cs
But couldn't get to sleep
I kept on rolling over
And then fell off my bed
I tried to stop from falling
But I fell right on my head
I went downstairs at 1 a.m.
To go watch some TVAnd all the shows on at that time
Weren't interesting to me
At 2 a.m. I went downstairs
To get myself a snack
It was very dark down there
And I hit the dumb coat rack
I am really, really tired
I want to go to bed
I put my covers under meAnd my pillow on my head

Ms. Beaver's Dam
One day, Ms. Beaver went to the zoo. She was
caught by the zookeeper with a net. But she chewed
through the net and escaped.
Ms. Beaver ran to the C.N. Tower. She thought it
was a big tree and began to chew. It was too hard. Ms.
Beaver went to the park next. She was hungry and
began to chew the trees. The park keeper was mad!
He was even madder when she chewed through his
pants.
Now the zookeeper, the C.N. Tower owner and
the park keeper were all chasing Ms. Beaver! But she
jumped into Lake Ontario and swam away!

There Is A Golden Tree
There is a golden tree with a silver trunk. It is in Toronto,
Canada. It is a smart magic tree. It lives by Sterling Hall. The
green grass grows all around it. Our smart magic tree has a heart.
It has golden leaves. It has polka dots. It has a brain. It never dies
and it will always be there when we need to answer a math
question. It thinks so much. It knows a lot of information. Our tree
has worldwide thoughts. It helps all children. Children come to
the tree to get questions answered about their work. The tree is
a boy. It is a lovable tree. It loves helping children. Our tree will
never stop helping all of us.

In winter, my brother and I like to
build a snowman. One day, the
snowman became real. We were all
happy about it. We did not mind the
cold because the snowman had to be
cold. When spring came the snowmanmelted and we were all sad. We wish
we can see the snowman again.

Witch's Assistant
I am the witch's assistant. I live in a bedroom beside the
witch. I always have to do all the work. 1 even have to feed her
food like rotten cheese, bat pie and all those disgusting things.
Anyway, I was sleeping when 1 was woken up by, "Zuta puta
lata mata zu zu!" I peaked through the crack in the door. The
witch was doing a spell. After she was finished she put the spell
book in her closet, then she went to bed.
The next morning, she went downstairs and said, "I have to
do a few errands," and she went out the door. I rushed upstairs
and went into her room. I reached into her closet and grabbed
her spell book. I looked on a page and said, "Duba ruba luba
too." There, sitting on the floor, was a tiny black cat, not even
as big as a rat. I heard the door opening. I looked through the
book and I couldn't find a reverse spell. The witch cameupstairs and found the cat and me on the floor. The momentshe stepped in she said, "You're fired!" I went outside with a
leap of joy. I was free!

EVENING CONCERTThe SHS Evening Concert was a big success again this year with every student in the school
participating in this great night of music! Over the course of the evening, performers included'
violinists, pianists, guitarists, bands, dancers and of course, vocalists. Mitchell Goldenberg and Mark;
Vesely did an outstanding job as the Masters of Ceremony and the teachers treated us to "Santa
Claus is Coming to Town". Even Santa himself appeared with a bag full of candies! Thanks to Mrs.
Van Doleweerd and all the others who helped to make it an evening of laughs and wonderful music.

5KI/SKATE DAY
Ski and Skate Day 1999, will be forever remem-
lered as a great day! Even though it rained all day,
)ver 200 snowriders and more than 1 00 skaters took
)art and had a fabulous time! Highlights on the slopes
ncluded our Head Boy's record-setting tube ride and
HS skiers wearing plastic bags over their clothing in
)rder to stay dry. Skaters that day had to brave the
vet weather in order to reach RINX, but once there,
ley enjoyed a dry skate. Thank you to Ms. Richter
nd Mrs. Nicoll who put together an amazing day.

HOWARD HOUSE
In September the House Captains,
Nolan Davies and Matteo Diano were
announced as the leaders for HowardHouse. In October, the Terry Fox Run
was a great success. We ran through our
dog house to collect House points. Our
meetings were enthusiastic. We built a
"People Search" that was put up on the
bulletin board. After the large snowfall,
we built snow sculptures. Howard House
built two hounds. Our mascot was there
too! Mrs. Dexter is our House Teacher
Head. She is the best! We have had a
great year. Thank you to all 50 membersof our House.

McCUNTOCK HOUSE
Throughout the year, McClintock
iouse has exerted a tremendous ef-
Drt to earn House points, demon-
trated a never-give-up attitude in
louse competitions, and shown a will-
igness to represent McClintock House
1 a responsible fashion. We have not
ist gone out and competed against
ther Houses. We have seen major
jnprovements in our House spirit and
jverall attitude. Well done McClintock

MORRISON HOUSEo?l So
Hey Morrison House! What a year!
You guys showed amazing House spirit!
We had our ups and downs, but through
it all we showed great sportsmanship and
had fun. We've had a blast as your House
Captains and will always think of Morrison
House as a winning House. Thanks to
Ms. Field and all the other Morrison
House teachers and staff who helped to
organize events and celebrate Morrison
House. It's been great, and we wish you
all the best next year.

SCENCE FAIRThis year's Science Fair took place throughout the day and into the evening of Wednesday,
February 3. The variety of subjects covered was terrific, as each grade level studied a different
topic. The areas covered included:
JK - Space Grade 4 - Forces
SK - The Senses Grade 5 - Static Electricity and Magnetism
Grade 1 - Colour Grade 6 - Ecosystems
Grade 2 - Animation Grade 7 - Experimental Tests

CHARACTER EDUCATIONThis year we started a Character Education program. Each month a different class focussed on a specific
'alue. To celebrate each one, the grade in charge designed posters and prepared poems and skits to be
)resented at an assembly in that month. The Houses were involved as well, as they created bulletin boards
0 tie in with a certain month's theme. Here are the values we studied:
Respect Sharing Social Skills Gratitude
Responsibility Initiative Risk Taking
Organization Appreciation Honesty
Thanks to everybody for taking part!

EARTH DAYEarth Day is celebrated around the world, and SHS was happy to be part of the celebration! With
posters, songs, skits and much more, we made it a day to be remembered. We also invited two special
university students to come to our school to talk to us about energy and pollution. They told us that
everything we see needs energy in order to be made and that this energy in turn creates pollution.
Congratulations to all the students who worked hard for Earth Day, and let's all try to make every
day Earth Day.

Earth Day Sonnet
Tis truly a terrible shameThat all our hard work
Be used for the earth's death in vain.
We say this without a smirk.
Thoust care this day,
Tis truly a fickle thing.
For on the morrow, you will run gay,
Dance, jump, play, and sing.
Earth nought sheds her final breath.
Pick up trash despite the bend
Or the Earth has one fate: death.
Worry not good people, two lines till the end.
Alas this sonnet is now through
The Earth's fate lies in the hands of you.

THE EMPEROR'S NEW CLOTHESThis year The Sterling Hall School presented the musical "The Emperor's New Clothes"
,
directed by Mrs. V. and Ms. Richter. The cast included 10 leads and a 40-member chorus
made up of students from Grades 3 and 4, all of whom did an excellent job of acting and
singing. There are too many chorus members to mention by name, but the leads were, (in
order of appearance): Mark Vesely (4S), Matthew Burns (7T), Malcolm Woodside (5F),
Michael Martin Evans (7H), Kevin Doe (5F), Ryan Gozlan (6), Rahim Ismail (6), GrahamBergsma (6), Andrew Leyland (5P), and Dorion Positano (4S). There were also 20 hard
working crew members! The cast, chorus and crew all did a spectacular job and it was a
thrilling experience!
