It’s a simple thing, to invite a neighbor to hear about Jesus. Simple but not easy. Like everything else Jesus calls us to do, it requires no more than a child-like un-derstanding. Nothing about the Christian life is that complicated to grasp. Nevertheless, to walk in simple obedience can be hard to do.

See you Sunday!

Sisters and Brothers,

I have mixed feelings about the new beverage ma-chines that are showing up everywhere. They’re called “Coca-Cola Freestyle” machines. In short, they’ve now located a touch-screen computer where the soda fountain used to be. You may select from over 100 possible soft drinks and flavor combinations—if you ever figure out how to get ice. You could be in real trouble, if you’re really thirsty.

Our lives are being taken over by gadgets we can’t use and instructions we can’t follow. Every facet of our lives—even entertainment and recreation—is compli-cated by an ever-widening array of choices delivered at a frantic pace. For example, there are more than 1.5 million apps in the Apple App Store. The menu at the Cheesecake Factory has over 250 selections.

Does everything have to be so complicated?

The Christian life doesn’t have to be complicated, says Nashville pastor Robert Morgan, author of the little book Simple. Following Jesus is simple– not always easy but simple nonetheless. Jesus himself said that God has hidden the most important truths of life from all the smart people; instead he reveals the biggest truths to little children (Matthew 11.25). In fact, the gospel is so simple that some would even call it foolish (1 Corinthians 1.21); even so, what some call simple “foolishness” is in reality the very wisdom and power of God!

So if the things of God are supposed to be simple enough for a child to grasp, then we must return to the simplicity of what God wants all of us his children to know and do. This month, we’re going to talk about the Christian life, and we’re going to keep it simple. Let’s make it plain.

I’m going to follow Pastor Morgan’s pattern. He boils everything down to what he calls the ABCs of the Christian faith, namely: Assurance (How can I know for sure I’m saved?), Baptism (Why do I need to get wet?), Church (Why do I need to go?), Devotions (How do I stay close to God?), and Evangelism (How can I share my faith?).*

Also, on Sunday nights this month, we’re forming small home groups for Bible study and fellowship. Will you join one of these 4-week groups and make being there a priority? Kacy and I will be hosting one of these groups in our home—will you pray for us? Instead of forming a group for church members, we are hosting a group and inviting our unchurched neighbors. Pray that our neighbors will come, and pray that they will be open to studying the Bible with us.

WORSHIP SCHEDULE

BEFORE AMEN

Host homes have been recruited, books have been or-

dered and leader materials distributed. Now all we

need is YOU. I hope you are planning on attending the

Before Amen church-wide study on prayer on Sunday

evenings in August. The list of all the host homes will

be in the weekly bulletin since all the details were not

finalized at the time of this newsletter printing.

Last month, my article was about the study, so I will

not repeat that again. But I do want to share some rea-

sons you might want to consider being a part of this

small group experience. 1.) We all need to pray. Any-

thing that will help us improve our prayer life not only

benefits us but also those we are praying for. 2.) Life

change happens in the context of a small group. When

we gather in small groups, we have a better environ-

ment to share, learn and help each other learn. 3.)

Home groups give us an excellent opportunity to invite

our neighbors to come. Inviting others is not just an

activity limited to host home leaders, it is all of our re-

sponsibility. How about inviting your neighbors to

attend with you. Those not willing to attend church

with you, might be willing to come to a host home with

you. 4.) Our church needs your prayers. This study will

remind us of how simple prayer can be and also how

powerful in shaping the future of the church.

I encourage you to be a part of the Before Amen study.

Consider this your invitation. Host homes are expecting

you and want you to come to their home for the study.

Serving Together,

Warren Weeks

Elementary News:

Sometimes it’s easy to know the wise choice. You probably know by now that a healthy breakfast of fruit, yogurt, and granola is a wiser choice than the greasy, fast-food good-ness of a sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit. It may pain you because you love a good breakfast from a fast-food joint, but you know that the healthy choice is the wise choice.

But what happens when the wise choice isn’t as easy to spot? Maybe you’re deciding between a few great job op-portunities or figuring out the best neighborhood to raise your family. You weigh the pros and the cons of each choice and seek guidance from wise people. You even take time to pray about it. And in the end, you trust that the choice you made is best.

As parents and leaders, we’ve learned this over time. But our kids are just starting their journey of discovering wis-dom, and unfortunately, our choices aren’t always cut and dry. As our kids grow up, they’ll soon learn that not every decision they’ll have to make is as clear as we might wish.

That’s why giving kids a strong foundation of wisdom is important. We want them to be equipped to face whatever choices they may encounter in the future, so we’re taking the next several weeks to talk about wisdom.

We define wisdom as finding out what you should do and doing it. It’s not simply about the difference between right and wrong, but about what is wise as we see life from God’s perspective. Jesus knew this first hand. The Bible says that He grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.

When it comes to wisdom, we want every child to grow up and say: “I can trust God no matter what.” And, because of how they trust Him they will also realize they can treat oth-ers the way they want to be treated and make wise choices regardless of the circumstances.

The principle is simply this, when a child realizes how much Jesus really loves them, what He did so they could have a relationship with God—and when that child makes a rela-tionship with God and His words a priority in his or her life— then they will have the power and wisdom they need to live out a bigger and better story.

As kids search for wisdom throughout August, we’ll encour-age them to memorize Proverbs 8:10-11, “Choose my teaching instead of silver. Choose knowledge rather than fine gold. Wisdom is worth more than rubies. Nothing you want can compare with her.”

Wisdom is valuable. We’re hoping to help kids dig deep into the Bible and discover some of God’s wisdom along the way that will help them in the years to come. After all, finding wis-dom isn’t that difficult—all you have to do is look.

Week 1: We will look at 1 Kings 3:4-15 and discover one of the wisest men who ever lived—Solomon. As Solomon got ready to take on the weight of leading a nation, he had an incredible dream. God came to him and asked: “What is it that I can give you, if I could give you anything, what is it that you would choose?” And Solomon picked wisdom.

Week 2: We will look at what happens when you listen to foolish people and take their advice. In 1 Kings 12:1-15, we’ll see what happened with one of Solomon’s sons, named Re-hoboam. He was a young man who, once he got the advice of his elders, disregarded and ignored the advice and listened to his peers and friends—the consequences were devastating.

Week 3: We will look at Proverbs 12:18 where Solomon wrote, “The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” Words can be powerful. With a word, we can cut people down or we can encourage them.

Week 4: We’ll wrap up our month by reminding children that wisdom not only comes from God, but is also about see-ing life from God’s perspective. Jesus knew this first hand. The Bible says in Luke 2:52 that He grew in wisdom and stat-ure, and in favor with God and man. We’ll dig deeper into some of the wisdom that Jesus shared with his disciples and discover how we can put it into practice.

Let me unpack that just a bit, and invite you to think

about how this may affect the way you attend church. Attending is not entering.

It unfolded for me as a journey from observing to

paying attention to singing. I was profoundly remind-

ed of why God is an advocate for singing. (see many

of the Psalms, but especially Ps 96.)

You see, because I was there to learn, I spent a lot of

time observing the worship leaders, the technology,

and the worshipers. And I learned many things.

But I didn't encounter Jesus.

Then I started reading the lyrics, choosing to enter

the truth they contain. I started to feel drawn in. And

when I started using my own voice to express the

words on the screen that I went from observer to en-

ter-er.

It was sort of like being on the sidelines of a baseball

game, then the bench, then the field. God beckons us

to the field.

As author Robert Webber reminded us decades ago,

"Worship is not something done to us or for us, but

by us."

I know. It's risky. What if I don't sing well? Or what

if I sing horribly? Or what if someone else notices

me?

Here's the reality--you can't win from the stands. But

if you're on the field? There's nothing like knowing

you are the victors.

When we fully enter worship—singing—giving not

only our attention but also our affection to God, we

will more fully know what it is to be the victors God

says we are.

Risky? Yes.

Worth it? No doubt.

So go ahead. Enter at your own risk. You won't re-

gret it.

Grace. Peace.

Rod

At the end of June, I was delighted to spend 4 days at

the National Worship Leader Conference in Kansas

City. I was reminded of how blessed I am, of how big

the world of worship leading is, of how much I don't

know, and--most of all--how great God is and how

transforming worshiping Him can be.

At nearly 50, I’m now one of the veterans in a gather-

ing like that. Sort of an old guy. I hope you can bene-

fit from what I experienced. Specifically about the

word “enter."

I attended the conference. Entering was minimal.

I attended the worship venue. Entering was optional.

I attended in the fringe of the group worshiping. En-

tering was still optional.

I attended in the middle of the group worshiping. En-

gagement became nearly unavoidable.

When I went from attending to entering God's pres-

ence, engagement was complete.

Woodburn Baptist student ministry’s passion is to teach, model, and provide opportunities for experiences that lead to a life of transformation. Our goal is to see teens who are far from God brought into a growing relation-ship with Christ. By the time a teenager graduates from high school they should have the tools and desire neces-sary for continuous growth in their relationship with God, be connected to others in the church who model what it is to live for and love Christ, and demonstrate a lifestyle of serving others.

August is a very important time in the youth and young adult ministry. It is a time where new students leave what they have known in children’s ministry and step into the whole new world of teenagers. It is also a time when teenagers step into a whole new world of college, the military, or a full time job. It can be some scary stuff not only for them but also for the parents. We want part-ner with you in the best way possible to help our stu-dents live lives for Christ.

Our small groups have the goal of connecting teens to-gether in a safe environment to foster friendships, teach Biblical principles, and find the encouragement and sup-port to live out a Christ-like life. This is the heart of our youth ministry. Life-change happens best in the frame-work of a small group. This environment is also the best way to help students learn to live authentic Christian lives with a leader who is dedicated to him or her. We see our leaders in our small group ministry as disciples who disci-ple. All of our leaders have a passion to see God glorified in the lives of our youth. They want nothing more that to help you aim your child directly at Christ and then let them go into the world to do the same for others. I hope and pray that you will allow, push, encourage, and talk about small groups with your student. If you have any questions about small groups please feel free to email me, text me, or catch me in the hallway at church. In the mean time, you can do a few things that will help with our communication and preparation for the fall:

More about . . .

Children’s Camp Update:

Thank you to everyone who prayed for and supported our kids who attended camp this year. We were able to send 22 students and 5 leaders to the first ever kid focused theme that Crossings has ever done, and it was amazing. Over the course of four days we centered on the idea of “Life in Color” as the gospel was presented and our kids were challenged. We talked about how the color red is a representation of the sin in our life. Our sin keeps us from being Holy, but because of God’s love for each one of us he provides a solution for us to obtain holiness. That solution is Jesus Christ who died on the cross to bring us from death to life, from darkness into the light. The next color we talked about is green. Green rep-resents growth that comes from abiding in Christ. We dis-cussed how life is challenging and doesn’t get easier once we become Christians, but according to John if we abide in Him and He in us then we will produce good things that reflect the growing relationship we have with God. Finally, we studied how the color yellow is associated with light. The book of John tells us that Jesus is the light of the world, and in Matthew we learn that if we are in Christ we are to also be light in the world like a city on a hilltop that can’t be hidden or a lamp placed on a stand for all to see.

God moved in incredible ways during our time at Crossings. As the gospel was presented our kids were open to the Spirit

As 1st - 6th graders discover God's infinite wisdom during the month of August we want to challenge them to a daily Bible Challenge through the book of Proverbs. Reading calendars can be found on the bulletin board by room 14, our Facebook page, and the JAM City Kids page of the church website. Each day the kids will have a small section of verses to read as they work their way through Proverbs, a repeating question to help them think about what they've learned and a spot for a parent to initial when they've completed their reading. There will be a small reward for each student who completes the entire challenge. While we are giving a small prize our hope is that ultimately our kids will realize the impact of God's word in each of their lives and will look for ways to continue seek-ing God after the month ends.

Preschool News:

We’re beginning our year with a review of all three basic truths. What an incredible way to remind us all what we’re trying to instill in the hearts of our smallest church attenders. We’ve incorporated these three truths into our “Away We Go” theme in a way that is sure to inspire everyone that comes into our preschool environment.

We’ll begin this month telling preschoolers that God made them. He made their hands, their eyes, their feet. He made each and every part of them. The second week, we’ll explain that not only did He make them, but He has a plan for them. He has a special plan for everyone! Then, preschoolers will hear the story of the lost coin and how God loves them even more than the woman loved her coin. God loves them so much and will always seek them. Finally, they will hear how God loved them so much that He sent Jesus to be their friend forever. Jesus is an amazing friend and loves each and every one of us so much.

moving and were obedient. We had two children pray to receive Christ as their Savior, one student who is wanting to follow through a decision made previously with bap-tism, and multiple students who expressed a desire to be a stronger witness to specific friends and neighbors. Rela-tionships were strengthened, and excellence in all things to glorify God became a recurring discussion for our older students who will transition to the youth group this year. Our students had a fun time at camp, but more important-ly they were open to the work of God in their lives. I ask you to pray more and pray harder now because this is when the real work begins. As we return from camp and get back into the daily routines this is when the battle be-gins for our students to stay committed to pleasing God, living for Him, and growing stronger in their faith. Pray that what God has started rooting in their lives will hold strong in each of their lives.
