MEMORIAL NEWS
St. Paul has again been blessed with a very generous gift to our Soup Lunch ministry. Kris and Bob Kamps, daughter and son-in-law of Jackie Ueland, have made a donation to our soup lunch. When visiting Jackie, they always support this ministry by donating their time in service on Wednesdays.
Many thanks to the Kamps for their generosity.
COVID cannot stop God's blessings.

We at St. Paul extend a special THANK YOU to Henry Pann for all his quiet behind-the-scenes work on the building and grounds. His most recent project has been to strip the old caulk and paint from the windows, clean up the frames, repaint and recaulk them. He's finished the 41 windows in the old part of the building!
THANK YOU SO MUCH, HENRY!
Volunteers Needed for Family Promise Meal Support
Family Promise is currently housing homeless families in local motels. They plan to continue that model at least until the end of the year. They are partnering with local churches to provide meals for families.
Partner congregations provide all three daily meals to the families at the motel.
The congregations purchase breakfast and lunch supplies and deliver those on the Sunday of the start of their hosting week. Congregation volunteers deliver a meal nightly around 5:30 p.m.
St. Paul is looking for volunteers to prepare and deliver meals for the week of Sept. 27 - Oct. 3. If you are interested or have questions, please email [email protected] or [email protected] with “Family Promise” as the subject line or call the church office at 608-365-7064.
St. Paul Lutheran Church Council Minutes Date: 8/18/2020 Meeting: held via Zoom Call to order: 7:03 p.m.
Attendance: Ken Harris, Judy Markee, Glenda Liptow, Jane Carr, Jen Murry, Dave Knutson, Jean Neitzel, Katie Hassenfelt, Pastor Lucy.

Katie motioned to approve the Treasurer’s report; Jean seconded. All approved. Motion carried
Finance Report: Katie emailed her report prior to the meeting. Starting to see a decline in giving.
Katie to order envelopes for 2021.
Jean motioned to approve the Financial Report; Dave seconded. All approved. Motion carried.
Old business: Live services - Will start back up on Thursday, August 20. We discussed the greeter/usher/council duty schedule. Pastor Lucy to send out the updated schedule.
Eckholm Property - There have been 2 showings but no offers yet.
Family Promise - Jane and Karen Moe have volunteered to coordinate the meals for Sept 27-Oct 3. They will get notices and sign ups out.
New Business: Fall Planning - We discussed and brainstormed some ideas for Parish Ed and Fellowship for the fall. Not sure if we want to do virtual Believers Club or send packets home. Linda will need to get her team together to work out details. Tori Carr can help as needed since we don’t have a need for nursery supervision at this time. Discussed a tentative “Tailgate” coffee hour for Sept 13. Watch for details.
Disinfecting checklist for Chet - this came out of his review - the need for a clear checklist of what needs to be disinfected and how frequently. Mark Stibbe put together a thorough list for different areas/functions. We will distribute the lists to the appropriate people and Ken will discuss with Chet.
Giving to the Synod - We verified that we have been sending monthly checks to the synod and will continue to do so as we are financially able.
VOLUNTEER WITH TRUCK OR TRAILER NEEDED
St. Paul has grass clippings, yard debris, etc., that need to be hauled away. Contact Judy Markee, Chet Organ, or the church office for more information.

Ten Tips for Navigating the “New Normal”
In these days, which I’ve taken to calling “the COVID era,” my emotional, mental and spiritual health seems to be on a bit of a roller-coaster – maybe you can relate? Some days I’m doing fine. Some days I’m even excited and hopeful about the new creative innovation this situation has prodded us into and the wonderful ways we see it bearing fruit. Other days, though, I hit a wall. I find myself often exhausted, discouraged, and “stuck.” So I thought I’d share some things I am trying to cling to as we all navigate these uncharted waters. In no particular order:
1. Remember that this “new normal” isn’t our forever normal! Every day we’re one day closer to a vaccine, to understanding how to live with this virus, to a new new normal – that will certainly once again involve more of the human touch and face-to-face conversation we long for. It’s not forever, it’s for now.
2. Learn about technology and take some risks to use it in new ways. We are lucky in many ways to live in a time when we can connect creatively even while staying apart. I’ve had “girls nights” on Zoom with college friends spread around the country. At church, we’re trying book groups and coffee hour online – and you can do it from the comfort of your own home, in your pj’s if you want! It’s a learning curve to use these tools, for sure. But it opens a whole new world when we do.
3. Ask for help. Phone a friend. Whether it’s figuring out how to use the aforementioned technology, or admitting you’re feeling depressed and need somebody to just listen, or you’re worrying about picking up groceries when you don’t want to compromise your health . . . it’s hard to ask for help. But people are longing to be helpful right now, and we all need each other to get through this. Reach out. And remember, St. Paul is here for you.
4. Give. I have preached about this before – when you feel anxious and afraid, giving is one of the best salves for your soul! Give to local charities like Family Promise, Caritas, and St. Paul’s Soup Lunch that are caring for our neighbors in need at this time. Volunteer to run errands for a house-bound neighbor. Write a card to someone in a care facility.
5. Limit your media consumption. Turn off the TV – especially cable news. It’s good and important to stay informed, but it’s also
good and important to give yourself a break from the 24/7 sensationalist news cycle. Find a few trusted sources – diverse ones that give you different perspectives, if you can – and then set boundaries on how often you check them. If the news is making it hard for you to sleep at night, maybe it’s time to take a break from the news. And learn to use the “snooze” button on Facebook.
6. Pay attention to your body. Get moving – get outside. Enjoy what you eat – indulge a little and don’t guilt-trip yourself, but also listen to your body and eat what gives you energy. Get enough sleep. Drink plenty of water. . . . ’Nuf said.
7. Determine your comfort level and do things that feel like worthwhile risks for you. Everybody’s level will be different depending on your household health factors and what gives you life and joy. Do you feel okay having a socially distanced happy hour with friends on somebody’s patio? Do you feel better about trying something like that out on Zoom? This is not an all-or-nothing world – and even though there are always risks, not all risk is equal. Do a little research, figure out what you feel is right for you, and be intentional about staying safe while caring for your mind, heart and soul.
8. Connect with God – pray, meditate, journal.…. I have found some adult coloring books with favorite bible verses on them to be a great way for me to remember God’s promises and intentionally carve out some “sabbath” rest time for myself. Whatever works for you: Make time for just you and God.
9. Connect with God’s people. It’s harder different now – but the church is still here, still meeting, still the family God has made us to be. Try out our Zoom book group. Make sure to watch church at 9:30 on Sunday morning and use the chat boxes to “talk” to others watching with you. Come to in-person worship as you feel safe. Drop a note to a friend from church. Volunteer to help with our children and youth ministries – which will be online for the time being . . . Stay connected.
10. ___________Fill in the blank. What’s your best tip on staying well in body, soul and spirit these days? I’d really like to know! Please send me your thoughts – I could use all the help I can get. We’re all in this together!
