General InformationManager’s Corner

Dear Members,S o m e p r o j e c t

u p d a t e s f o r t h e Summer of 2014. Our scheduled project of expanding the pond b e t we e n # 1 1 te e and #18 green has been delayed from it’s June 2, 2014 start date. The county has taken longer than anticipated to receive bids for this work. We had a meeting with them last week, and they informed us that they would most likely not schedule the start of this project until July 7, 2014. We made them aware that this 35 day delay has us concerned that any of the new sod that is going to be installed would have great difficulty to achieve proper growth for golf play for the upcoming season. We suggested to them that they reevaluate the start date and request an extension until next June for the start of this project from the Southwest Florida

Water Management Department. We will keep you informed of our progress with the county.

Fairway regrassing that was reported prior will be rescheduled for the spring of next

year as the contractor has been delayed on other previously scheduled projects. Curt and I felt that the delay would not allow enough recovery time before our fall season. Curt and his crew will aggressively work on these few Fairways this summer with ample aerification, verticutting, soil amending and fertilization to improve these fairways. We are still planning to remove a few trees and continue trimming the trees that are causing some shade issues.

Have a great summer and we will see you in the fall.

— Jack Gleason

Kids’ Summer Camp This year ’s Chil-dren’s Summer Camp has been a huge suc-cess. The dates for the camps are June 9th, June 16 – 20th, July 7th – 11th, and August 4th – 8th. As of this writing, two weeks of camp have been completed. The first week of camp included 15 children. Week two included 18 chil-dren. These children are ages 5 through 11, with one girl age 15 participating. Wendi McAnn has been diligent in signing up kids through Facebook and contacts with mothers. Certi-fied lifeguard Alyson Ruth has done a great job of supervising the kids while they enjoy their time at the pool. Courtney Smith has done a great job of greeting parents and kids upon their arrival each and every day. Provided items include water bottles, sunscreen, bag tags and much more at the begin-ning of each day. Mid morning snacks and refreshments are provided Lunch is provided each day. A couple of kids have allergies and special food requirements. Courtney takes care of the special needs of these children. After pool time, movies are provided along with plenty of fun arts and crafts. Golf class begins promptly at 8:30 am. Literature is passed out based on the day’s events. The first class begins with the

From The Proproper grip, stance, and alignment. This is all done in the Palm Room with the SNAG equipment. Start New At Golf (SNAG) is a specially developed learning program about clubs, equip-

ment, targets, SNAG suit, games to be played by kids beginning the game of golf. The balls used in SNAG Golf look like ten-nis balls, but they are slightly smaller. The ball adheres to targets that have Velcro ap-plied so the ball sticks to the targets. This equipment is now used nation wide in golf clubs, schools and city programs and state parks. Jack Nicklaus is an advocate of SNAG golf. We have created many different games for the kids with the SNAG equipment. We have used the tennis courts, bocci ball courts, chipping green, putting green, driving range and also the Palm Room for indoor games. On day four, we begin using golf clubs and golf balls. The kids begin to putt, chip and pitch to certain targets. We then introduce them to a full swing, eventually swinging the driver. We take them to the Challenger Course on Day five to play a hole or two. Along the way, we introduce some etiquette and simple rules. Much of the instruction is extremely elementary. Five year old kids can take a few minutes to put a tee in the ground and try to balance the

ball on top of the tee. These simple fundamentals take ex-treme patience, but the reward is there when we get a big smile from the kids. Thanks to your new Assis-tant Golf Professionals, Walter Newell and Aaron Fusiek, for their countless hours of work and preparation for these Kids’ Camps. Also, a big thanks to the Men’s and Ladies’ Golf As-sociations for their donations to our junior golf program. With their donations, we were able to purchase the SNAG

equipment we have used for our second year of Kids’ Camps. Also, a big thanks to the mem-bers that donated monies through a fundraiser last year that we were able to purchase new junior golf clubs. We now have sets of clubs for all ages of kids. Finally, we are in need of some volunteers to help with the camps in July and August. If you are able to help, let us know in the Golf Shop.

From The GreensSummerProjects

Summer time is upon us which means that transition is over and summer aerifica-tion and verticutting of the greens, tees, and fairways has begun. The only projects that we have scheduled for this summer are the rebuilding of the wall on number eight and the removal of a few trees.

We have postponed the re-grassing of some of the fairways because the contractor had a couple of issues and wouldn’t have been able to start until the first of July which is a little late

for that project to get grown in properly. We are going to reschedule it for the first of June next year. Since we are not re-grassing those fairways, we will be do-ing extra maintenance on them this summer to get them in better

shape to handle the stresses of winter play.

Looking forward to a great summer of golf! If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to ask me when you see me on the course. Thank you for your continued support.

Board continues to work to improve our facilities and experiences at Seven Sprints. After perusing our

budget for the upcoming year, it was decided to donate

$1,000 to support the lighting and other projects at the front gate. Our focus for the year has been to improve the locker room. We have had new emer-gency lighting installed and have purchased an exercise bench to replace the wicker chairs that were there. Along with new painting, this gives the work-out room a fresh face and renewed purpose.

Random Yet Amazing Golf Facts 1. Don’t feel bad about your

high handicap. 80% of all golfers will never achieve a handicap of less than 18.

2. The word “caddy” comes from the French word for student, “cadet”, which is pronounced cad-DAY.

3. The chances of making two holes-in-one in a round of golf are one in 67 million.

4. John Hudson, a 25 year old professional, achieved a near miracle when he holed two consecutive holes-in-one at the 11th and 12th holes (195 yards and 311 yards respectively) in the 1971 Martini Tournament at Norwich,England.

5. The term “birdie” comes from an American named Ab Smith. While playing a round in 1899, he played what he described as a “bird of a shot”, which became “birdie” over time.

6. 125,000 golf balls a year are hit into the water at the famous 17th hole of the Sta-dium Course at Sawgrass.

7. There are 365 dimples on a regulation golf ball.

8. Golf balls travel significant-ly farther in hot weather. The warmer the ball is, the more resilient the rubber becomes. A warmer golf ball has more elasticity, which causes the ball to leave the club with more force.

SSMGA Tee Times and Luncheons SSMGA continues to have tee times on Friday mornings and is open to any and all players. The Pro Shop has sign-up sheets and varies the format of golf play each week. Starting in September, the third Friday of each month will be the luncheon for SSMGA members. Specific dates to be published in the next quarterly update.

Enjoy the summer, whetheryou are here at SSG&CC orelsewhere. According to the above golf fact, we should all be hitting longer shots.

Golf HumorLong Par A golfer gets to a long par 3 over water. A voice from above says, “Hit the new Titleist Pro V.” The golfer tees up the Titleist

and takes a practice swing. The voice comes back, “Never mind, hit a range ball.”

Irish Golf AU.S.citizenisvacationingonhis own in Ireland. He decides to play a round of golf and is paired with three local gents. He takes a few practice swings, steps up to the first tee, and proceeds to hook the ball out of bounds. He shakes his head, reaches in his pocket, and re-tees another ball. He tells his playing partner that he is taking a mulligan. He pounds one down the center of the fairway about 280 yards out. With a big smile, he asks the others,“IntheU.S.,wecallthataMulligan; was wondering what you called it here in Ireland?” After a moment of silence, one of the locals replies, “Hitting three.”

Caddie Trouble A golfer walks off the 18th green, hands his putter to his caddie and says, “Kid, you’ve got to be the worst caddie in the world.” The caddie replies, “Sir, that would be too much of a coincidence.”

Ladies’ Tee A man was addres-sing the ball when an announcement came over the loud-speaker: “Will the gentleman on hole number one please not hit from the Ladies’ tee box.” T h e m a n b a c k saway, a little distracted, then approaches his ball again. As he does, the same announcement comes over the loud-speaker : “ Wil l the gentleman on hole number one please not hit from the Ladies’ tee box.” The man is getting

irritated now, and after backing away from his shot – approaches his ball one more time. This time the announcement came: “We really need the gentleman on hole number one to move off the Ladies’ tee box!” To which the man turns around and yells: “And I really need the announcer to shut up and let me play my second shot!”

Good Game Four old men went into the pro shop after playing 18 holes of golf. The pro asked, “Did you guys have a good game today?” The first old guy said, “Yes, I had three riders today.” The second old guy said, “I had the most riders ever. I had five.” The third old guy said, “I had seven riders, the same as last time.” The last old man said, “I beat my old record. I had 12 riders today!” After they went into the locker room, another golfer who had heard the old guys talking about the game, went to the pro and said, “I’ve been playing golf for a long time and thought I knew all the terminology of the game; but what’s a rider?” The pro said, “A rider is when you hit the ball far enough to actually get in the golf cart and ride to it.”

Playing Hooky A Baptist pastor decides to play hooky on a Sunday to play golf. He’s playing the best golf of his life when an angel asks God, “Are you going to let this slide? Do something!” So God says, “Watch this.” The pastor hits a 425-yard tee shot and the ball goes in the hole for a double eagle. Surprised, the angel asks, “Why did you reward him?” God shrugs and says, “Who is he gonna tell?”

A Word From the Seven Springs Golf and Country Club House CommitteeThe House Committee is

appointed by the Board of Governors to oversee and support entertainment and dining experiences for the membership. The committee is always looking for insight into members’ views and ideas. Lately, we have heard so many positive comments along with some good constructive criticism regarding the changes in the menu and event offerings and we thank you for your feedback. We also realized we need to communicate more often with the membership, especially now, when the cost of food and beverages continue to increase. 209

Have you noticed a sharp i n c r e a s e i n l i m e s ? H o w about premium meats and vegetables: the Club faces these increases the same as you do at local grocery stores. The House Committee will continue to make suggestions to vary menu offerings and support our executive chef and senior management as they strive to provide the best value for our members as well as be fiscally

responsible.We will be updating you

periodically as adjustments are made and pledge to keep you informed of major changes in events offerings. All this is done with increased cost of goods and member value in mind.

As summer is upon us and our population decreases, we will be offering Bar Bingo without food options on the second, third and fourth Wednesdays; Bar Poker has been suspended. You will also find new featured items on the dinner lounge menu for Thursday and Friday nights. Birthday Bash dinners will be served in the Lounge. The Prime Rib dinner remains the same on the 3rd Thursday of each month. There are no major events planned until the fall.

Thank you for your continued interest in the activities of Seven Springs Golf and Country Club, feel free to contact any member of the House Committee if you have any comments or suggestions.
