introductionintroduction1. iNTroducTioN‘The Spirit of the West’ is a stunning visual portrayal of the state, the largest in Australia, as seen through the eyes of photographer Jon Davison.The narrative for the book is based on thought provoking and illuminating interviews with 40 people who have either chosen to make this state their home, were born here, or have had their lives infl uenced in some way through their association with WA.Through their combined stories we discover the essence of this great state.The idea that people in their specialist fi elds know a lot about their particular world, and can off er an insight into one aspect of life in WA. For instance a marine conservator will know about the currents, sea life etc, a meterologist will know about the air that aff ects out state. A farmer knows the soil, the weather patters, a nurse knows what happens on the wards during a full Moon! More often than not, these people have not communicated their knowledge with others, that could form a more hiolistic of life here in WA. If we combine this information with 30 to 30 others, then we form a unique picture of what it is like to live here. I fi nd it’s interesting to know how people have been changed by association with WA. Has the geography, the climate etc infl uenced them in a way that is diff erent to say Sydney, and what is that diff erence? Only through these stories do we get a glimpse of the infl uences that are unique to this state.They say that points on the planet emit a quality,an energy or infl uence. It stands to reason thereforethat this infl uence must aff ect those who choose toreside there. It is an interesting chance to see whatthis may be.Jon co-authored a book a few years ago ‘Beneath Southern Skies - celebrating 100 years of Australian aviation’. He interviewd 30 people across the country with a specifi c outcome, to fi nd out if, and why Australian aviatios were diff erent. The picture they uncovered showed that they were indeed diff erent, and there was a sound reason for it. To do the same with the state of WA couldoff er a similar insight.

☛ The producers wish to combine the production of the book with a documentary that covers the making of the book, plus the outcome that reveals the spirit of the west through the personal stories. This will have various formats including; ebook, a downloadable ipad version through iTunes, a DVD inserted in the back of the book on the making of the book.

1 1 . MArKetiNGCommunication has been established between Eye in the Sky and WA News, with the outcome that WA News are prepared to become involved in a marketing capacity. They wish to promote the title through the groups various media outlets. [ Bungle Bungle ]

11. DISTRUBUTIONConversations have taken place with WA Publishing (formerly UWA Press) and they are keen to act as distrubutors for the title.

12. FUNDINGThe producers are seeking funding for the production of this title. To include travel across the state for three people (photographer, interviewer, fi lm maker) to compile the various stories. A full budget available on request.

13. TIMINGIt is envisaged that a launch date for Christmas 2014 is achievable. Schedules and timelines available on request.
