The Anointing of DavidAdapted from 2 Samuel 5:1-5

When David was a young boy he used to spend much of his time out in the hills

minding his father’s sheep.

One day a prophet called Samuel came

to David’s father, looking for someone to go with him and become a leader of

the people.

David was the youngest in his

family; still Samuel chose him and anointed him.

David left his home and his family and went with Samuel.

Later, when David was thirty years old, Israel’s leaders met with him at Hebron.

One said,

We are your relatives. Even when Saul was

king, you led our nation in battle.

And the Lord promised that someday you

would rule Israel and take care of us

like a shepherd.

During the meeting, David made an agreement with the leaders. He asked

the Lord to be their witness.

The leaders took some olive oil.

They poured olive oil on David’s

head to show that he was now the

king of Israel.

David became a great king.

He was thirty years old when he

became king. He ruled over Judah

and later he ruled over both Israel

and Judah.

King David ruled for a total of forty years.
