Getting Healthy By: Amanda Alley
In this day and age everyone seems more obsessed with losing weight and getting fit than they ever have. There are thousands of weight loss pills, workouts, and diets out there. I myself was put up for weight loss surgery, but declined. Losing weight has always been very difficult for me, but I finally tried something I hadn’t “really” tried before. No crash diet or pills, and body killing workouts. I decided to change other things. First thing was the amount of junk and processed foods that I consumed. Then I added 30 min of cardio and did some toning exercises. After some time I would add time to the cardio and reps to the other exercises. I also lowered the amount of food I ate at dinner by half, lunch by a quarter, and made sure I ate a good breakfast. With just these few changes, I had lost about 40lbs. Yes this took some time, but the results did come. The thing that I found is that sometimes fitness experts and doctors won’t know what will help, so they can go to extremes. You have to find what works for you and stick to it. Don’t go crazy. Make small changes and build on them. Soda, candy, and sweets are all wonderful, but in moderation. Cut your bread, rice, pasta, and potato intake in half and you will notice a difference as well. You can also switch to wheat bread and pasta, veggie pasta, and sweet potatoes. Eat more fruit and vegetables as well. Do the research on how these things affect your body as well. Starches turn into sugars, and as your sugar level rises, your ability to lose weight decreases. Good luck on your fitness goals. I have attached a 30 day challenge to the end of this newsletter. If you would like to take it then by all means have fun.

Dear Soldiers and Family Members of the Mighty 97th Transportation Company,
As this month marks my last in Command of this great and storied unit, I would like to take one final
opportunity to reiterate just what an honor and a privilege it has been to serve with, and for, all of you over the
last eighteen months.
Time and time again I have been reminded of what an awesome responsibility Company Command is
and just how special this unit is in every single way-from its mission to its equipment to the fine men and
women who comprise it. I have been truly fortunate to have been a part of this organization and it is an
experience I will take with me forever.
While I certainly won’t utilize this short narrative as an opportunity to leave any great parting wisdom
or philosophy on leadership, I will say that the last eighteen months with this unit has changed me and forced
me to grow on so many levels-personal, professional, emotional and spiritual-that I would just like to thank the
Soldiers of this unit for their dedication to duty and service to our country, as well as the family members that
keep it all together while their loved ones are away supporting the war fighter and sustaining the fight. It has
been the absolute highlight of my military career thus far, and I would be hard pressed to believe another
experience will top this. I truly hope that you felt as though I provided you the support, leadership, time and
resources you needed to be successful in your work and home lives, and I look forward to watching as this unit
again embarks on yet another chapter in its illustrious history.
I sincerely wish you all the best of everything in all of your future endeavors, and of course wish you
‘Fair Winds and Following Seas’. BEACHMASTERS! HIT THE BEACH!
Sincerely,
CPT Miles D.H. Miller Commander, 97th TC 11 APR 2012-20 SEP 2013
