The innovative approach adopted by this program enabled us to rapidly house families. The successful outcomes to date demonstrate that it is already working. We have been able to place families in permanent housing and identify stable employment for the parents much more quickly than in the past – in approximately 185 days. This innovative program will help vulnerable people thrive and achieve self- sufficiency and in the long run it will realize savings to the county and state government. I am proud that Catholic Charities is at the forefront of pioneering the development and implementation of such innovative programs. We have also led the effort to improve access to primary care for adults with severe, long-term mental illness through new collaborations in Burlington and Mercer Counties. Our domestic violence service, Providence House, has also been recognized as a statewide leader in the prevention of violence in the home and serves on New Jersey’s Child Abuse Prevention Task Force. They served as the statewide pilot for a specialized childrens’ counseling program that helps young victims recover and flourish into adulthood. Programs in Children and Family Services have received recognition for their Community-Centered approach to working with families to develop the skills needed to find employment and achieve stability. Also, our Monmouth Counseling Program has been at the forefront of bringing an innovative type of trauma treatment to Monmouth County. This treatment approach is a nationally recognized model for effective treatment and our program was selected as the lead agency. I want to acknowledge the dedication of our staff in making these efforts possible. I also express heartfelt gratitude to all of our friends, supporters and partners for their generous commitment to helping us meet our mission to alleviate human suffering by renewing lives and restoring hope. One of our Board members, a businessman, is fond of describing his support of Catholic Charities as a “solid investment.” He explains that he evaluates his philanthropic investments like any other investment, looking at the return, the effectiveness, and the efficiency. He recently offered a presentation in which he asserted: “The return at Catholic Charities is attractive. For many programs, $1 invested in treatment saves society $7 in social costs. Catholic Charities obtains measurable, successful outcomes and the result means more people can live independently and function productively. Overall, a very good investment in making the world a better place!” Despite the economic challenges of our funding environment, we have developed new programs and innovative ways to keep our mission alive. I have to agree with our Board member – we are a good investment. I could not have said it better myself! Best regards, Marlene Laó-Collins Executive Director in this issue ... I recently received a report on one of our newer programs for homeless families thatprovided incrediblyexciting results. Theinnovative approach adopted by this program enabled us to rapidly house families. The successful outcomes to date demonstrate that it is already working. We have been able to place families inpermanent housing and identify stable employment for the parents much more quickly than in the past – in

approximately 185 days. This innovative program will help vulnerable people thrive and achieve self-sufficiency and in the long run it will realize savings to the county and state government.

I am proud that Catholic Charities is at the forefront of pioneering the development and implementation of such innovative programs. We have also led the effort to improve access to primary care for adults with severe, long-term mental illness through new collaborations in Burlington and Mercer Counties.

Our domestic violence service, Providence House, has also been recognized as a statewide leader in theprevention of violence in the home and serves on New Jersey’s Child Abuse Prevention Task Force. They served as the statewide pilot for a specialized childrens’counseling program that helps young victims recover and flourish into adulthood.

Programs in Children and Family Services have received recognition for their Community-Centered approach to working with families to develop the skills needed to find employment and achieve stability. Also, ourMonmouth Counseling Program has been at theforefront of bringing an innovative type of trauma

treatment to Monmouth County. This treatmentapproach is a nationally recognized model for effective treatment and our program was selected as the lead agency.

I want to acknowledge the dedication of our staff inmaking these efforts possible. I also express heartfelt gratitude to all of our friends, supporters and partners for their generous commitment to helping us meet ourmission to alleviate human suffering by renewing lives and restoring hope. One of our Board members, abusinessman, is fond of describing his support ofCatholic Charities as a “solid investment.” He explains that he evaluates his philanthropic investments like any other investment, looking at the return, theeffectiveness, and the efficiency. A Letter from the Bishop of theDiocese of TrentonJune 2012

Dear Friends of Catholic Charities,

Catholic Charities exists to be of service to those whom society has ignored or, worse, has chosen to forget: the poor, thehungry, the homeless, the imprisoned, the mentally challenged, the afflicted and addicted --- those who live on the very margins of society. But it is not simply “charity” that stands at the center of this organization --- it is “Catholic” charity. What we do in Catholic Charities is reach out to those most in need not merely because it is good or important or right, fine motives to be sure. What we do in Catholic Charities is reach out to those most in need because that is what Jesus calls us to do, asks us to do, commands us to do; because that is what the Catholic Church calls us to do, asks us to do, commands us do in Jesus’ name: “for whatever you do to the least of my sisters and brothers, you do to me (Matthew 25: 40).”

Of course, one does not have to be a Catholic to work for or help Catholic Charities succeed in its mission but everyone needs to recognize that among all the social service organizations and not-for-profits in contemporary society, Catholic Charities draws its first and final motivation from the social doctrine of the Church which has love --- God’s love --- at its heart.

As Bishop of the Diocese of Trenton and President of the Board of Catholic Charities, I thank all those who support Catholic Charities in our Diocese in the name of all those you have helped through your generosity.

With my grateful prayers, I am.Faithfully yours in Christ,

Most Reverend David M. O’Connell, C.M.Bishop of Trenton

Parish Emergency Assistance ProgramOur Parish Emergency Assistance Program (PEAP) was established in 2008 and is funded through the generous support of the Diocese of Trenton. It is designed to assist parishes in re sponding to individuals and families through modest monetary grants to help with utilities payments and rent. Bishop O’Connell’s 2012 Annual Appeal high-lighted this program to show how it helped Debra. Debra is a nurse, diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis while raising her young son many years ago, but in 2011 she could no longer physically live in her own home. She located hous-ing designed for those with MS, but lacked the funds for a security deposit. Fortunately, PEAP was contacted and soon Debra was in her new home. “There is no way to describe how I felt when they said yes, we are going to help you. I cried with joy,” Debra acknowledged, grateful for the funds needed to secure her new home.

What are the benefits of donating my car to Catholic Charities? You benefit by being able to reduce your taxable income when taxes are itemized. Plus, you avoid the costs associated with selling your car. No need to pay for advertising, no loss of privacy and possible security risk, and no need to pay for vehicle registration, insurance, and repairs to keep your car in running condition while you wait for a buyer.

You also benefit from knowing that Catholic Charities uses any funds derived from your donated vehicle to help indi-viduals in local communities achieve self-sufficiency through job training, food and rent assistance, as well as other essen-tial services. You are dealing directly with a human services organization that has been helping families and individuals in Central New Jersey for a century. There are no “middle men.”

Does Catholic Charities handle everything for me?Yes. If your car is not in running condition, Catholic Charities will tow it. Catholic Charities will also provide everything you need to qualify for a tax deduction.

What does Catholic Charities do with donatedvehicles? The majority of vehicles are sold at wholesale or salvaged. The proceeds are then used by Catholic Charities to fund services. Catholic Charities has been recognized by NJBiz for its fiscal efficiency and is proud to be one of very few nonprofits that uses less than 10 percent of revenue for administrative costs. Cars in good running condition are evaluated and donated to a client of a Catholic Charities program in Burlington, Mercer, Monmouth or Ocean County.

How long will it take to pick up my vehicle? We make donating your car as simple and convenient as

possible. A tow company will contact you within two to three business days. Call our business services director at 1-877-383-CCDT.

Do I have to be with the vehicle at the time ofpick-up?No. Special arrangements can be made by calling our repre-sentative.

What paperwork do I need? The only paperwork needed is a signed, clear title (pink slip). Have your title with you when you call-in your donation. [Please note: a clear title indicates the title is in the name of the donor without a lien].

Will I get a tax receipt for my donation?Yes, we will issue a receipt at the time of vehicle pick-up. This is not your final tax receipt. This initial acknowledgement will indicate your name as well as the year, make, and model of the car you are donating. We issue a tax form to every vehicle do-nor at any amount as an official legal record of the transaction.

How is the value determined on the vehicledonated? The value is determined by the gross proceeds raised from the sale of the donated vehicle. You no longer have the burden of determining the value yourself. The amount listed on IRS Form 1098-C, Contributions of Motor Vehicles, Boats, and Airplanes will be the gross proceeds of the deductible donation.

If the vehicle is given to a Catholic Charities client, you will still receive a Form 1098-C noting that it was given to an individual or family in need. You and your tax advisor will determine the fair market value as your deduction because the vehicle was kept in service.

Your Voice Matters:Advocacy Day a Huge Success!

On April 26th, a group of 69motivated staff and consumers gathered for Catholic Charities’ 5th annual Advocacy Day. The event was held at Sacred Heart Church in Riverton, NJ and featured a keynote address by Rev. Bruce Davidson, and three workshops providing information on housing, self-advocacy, and communityresources. The entire day was full of education and empowerment for everyone involved!

Circle of Friends Annual Campaign

Four out of five philanthropicdollars are contributed byindividuals and bequests. With government funding of socialservices dramatically decreasing, we need the involvement and support from individuals like you to continue to provide the services fewer organizations are offering.

That’s what our Circle of Friends campaign is about: buildingrelationships between our friends so that the agency can continue to carry out its mission of helping others. We view it as an additional way of helping others at their time of need and in doing so, sending forth a ripple of hope that encourages our friends to do the same.

The campaign started in June 2011 by meeting face to face with our Board of Trustees members, as well as some of our closest and most loyal supporters. Last year, Circle of Friends raised nearly $100,000 and our goal for 2012 is $175,000. We look forward to building close relationships with our generous donors who give support through our direct mail appeals, The Spirit, and at various events as the year goes on.

Please contact Nancy Tompkins, Development Director, at 609-394-5181 ext. 1161 or [email protected], for questions or more information.

Volunteer Spotlight: Christina Pires

Christina Pires is a junior at Richard Stockton College and interned at Ocean Emergency & Community Services (OECS).

As a volunteer intern, Christina assisted clients with the intake process when requesting food and handled administrative duties. Christina brought knowledge of other local programs to the clients at OECS helping them to receive additional assistance.

“Christina was a fast learner, and always requested increased duties that would challenge her in her learning,” said Carmen Pagan, Program Director at OECS.

“I enjoyed working directly with the clients and found helping the clients very fulfilling,” Christina said about her experience.

The internship program with Richard Stockton College social work students is most beneficial and very appreciated at OECS. Social work students are required to fulfill 85.5 hours of interning towards their degrees.
