RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED

A Message from Rev. Daniel Willson

Ah, summertime! Some people see the summeras a laid-back time to go to conferences, takevacation, and pretty much coast until the

responsibilities of fall come barreling down upon them again. Well, I would say that I almost identify with “some people.” Andthat’s because I am going to a conference, and I am taking avacation in July ... but coasting? NEVER! So far this summer, I’ve been quite active in getting a betterunderstanding of the Williamsburg community and the widerPeninsula area. I’ve met with local pastors, non-profit leaders,William & Mary staff and students, and associational staff fromthe BCM, PBA, BGAV, and CBF. As I continue to understandour place in these surrounding communities, I am feeling bothgrateful for the work that we are already doing and hopeful for allthe potential that can yet be realized.

In getting to know our surroundings, however, there issomething (or someone) very conspicuous that is missing fromthe equation. Can you think of it? I’ll give you a hint, it’s YOU!!! Now of course I have been getting to know many of youalready. If you are serving as a Trustee, Deacon, Officer, orCommittee/Council member, chances are that we have spent agood deal of time together already. But if you don’t fall into oneof those categories (or perhaps even if you do) there may nothave been too many opportunities for us to really get to knowone another. So throughout this summer I am teaching a combinedSunday School class that is designed to help us get betteracquainted. Each session will be part lecture, part Q&A, and partdiscussion. This way I can share with you some of mybackground and thinking and begin to get us talking to oneanother. Classes will be held in the South Wing during the normalSunday School hour (9:30 am - 10:30 am) and all Adult andSenior High Sunday School classes are invited to attend as wellas anyone else who might be interested.

By the time you receive this newsletter we will have held atleast one session, but here is the complete schedule below. Thefirst two sessions will be autobiographical, while the remainingsessions will cover some basics in a fresh way. I hope you willjoin us!June 21 - I’m Baptist Born, Baptist Bred: Growing Up In (andOut of) Christian FundamentalismJune 28 - Are We There Yet? Life in Seminary and BeyondJuly 5 - So You Want to Be a Theologian? ThinkingTheologically in an Age of Canned AnswersJuly 12 - Please Read Before Handling: A (Brief) Anatomy ofthe Good BookJuly 19 - From Cover to Cover: A (Brief) Anatomy of the GoodBookJuly 26 - Our Family of Origin: Recovering From FourProblems in Church HistoryAugust 2 -A Knife, a Chain, and a Certificate: Case Studies inBiblical Interpretation, Part IAugust 9 -A Knife, a Chain, and a Certificate: Case Studies inBiblical Interpretation, Part IIAugust 16- Looking Backward, Looking Forward: Gospel andMission in Ethical PerspectiveAugust 23- Wherever the Wind Blows - Open SessionAugust 30- Where Do We Go from Here?

FISH Notes The WBC food collection for FISH takesplace on the first Sunday of each month. Cereal is the suggested FISH donation forJuly. Our generous WBC congregation

donated 30 bags of food to FISH in June! We are truly blessedwith a caring congregation.

Donations to FISH generally drop during the summermonths, but the need does not. Please help our neighbors inneed throughout the summer! ***SEPTEMBER is the month for our church to furnishvolunteers for FISH on Tuesdays. The sessions are from 9:30am to 12:00 noon, and from 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm. You maychoose a morning or an afternoon, or bring your lunch and workboth sessions. In addition to doing important work, we have lotsof fun. There will be a sign-up sheet on the West Wing bulletinboard, or you may call Claire Buckle at 229-8714.***

ALLIANCE OF BAPTISTS

Senior Pastor Daniel Willson welcomed Jason Smith and hiswife, Myra Houser, at the May 24 service. Jason brought greetingsfrom the Alliance of Baptists.

CHILDREN’S PLAYGROUND AREAUntil the ground has stabilized, please keep the children off of theplayground area. We have had many plumbing and drainage andHVAC repairs this spring and summer, and the ground in thatparticular area has to slowly regain stability in order to keep fromsinking. Therefore, please do not let your children play in this areaat this time.

HELP NEEDED DURING JULY ABSENCESDuring the month of July, the administrator will be gone to Maine forabout a week or so in order to attend the birth of another grandchild. This may or may not coincide with the minister’s vacation from July20 through July 27. In either case, it would be nice to have someoffice coverage at that time. If anyone can volunteer to be here toanswer phones and/or to do very light general clerical work, pleasegive Mary Ellen a call at 229-1217. Furthermore, it is possible thatthe August issue of the Spire will be sent out a little late.

Our sincere and heartfelt thanks to all of you for thelovely cards and messages of concern following Ed’sstroke. Your prayers have helped to put him on theroad to recovery and we are truly grateful to each ofyou. We hope to thank you in person soon. Sincerely, Ed and Priscilla Briggs
