Pictured above: Officers of the 2016 Student Council left to right: Nicole DeBuono, Tess Stopczynski, Cooper Deck and Gus Pfisterer

The New Hartford High School Student Council is excited to announce the donation of a new Water Cooler with a bottle Filling Station, located in the High School lobby. The purchase of the fountain was made possible after two years of fund raising through the annual Talent Show which is held each Spring. Past contributions of the High School Student Council include picnic tables, benches in the lobby, an Alma Mater banner in the gym, flowers and plants around the Don Edick honorary sign, and the Spar-tan Nation banners at the entrance of the High School Gym. Student Council is seeking highly motivated and enthusiastic candidates who are committed to the school community. Elections for the 2016-2017 school year will be held within the month of May.

NEWS FROM THE COUNSELING DEPART-MENT...

The school year is quickly coming to a close and many students may be making plans for summer. New Hartford students may participate in the BOCES Regional Summer School Program. Detailed information and the registra-tion form can be found on the Senior High Counseling Department webpage.

Summer School is held at Proctor Senior High School from July 5 through August 16 (classes will not be held on Fri-days). There are two class periods (8:00 a.m.to 9:40 a.m. and 9:50 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.). A Regents Tutorial is also available beginning August 1 and running four days per week through August 16, from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. This is available for students who passed a course but wish to raise their Regents exam score. Students may also choose to register solely for a Regents Walk-in Exam if they have passed the course. Regents exam days, as de-termined by the State Education Department, are August 17 and 18.

A shuttle bus will be provided for classes, tutorial ses-sions, and Regents Exams. A bus will pick up students at both the Senior and Junior High Schools at 7:15 a.m. for first period, 9:05 a.m. for second period and 11:10 a.m. for the tutorial. Return shuttles will run at the end of each period. Students may register with their counselor until NOON on June 28. If you have any questions regard-ing summer school, please do not hesitate to call your child’s counselor. Please note, final report cards will be mailed on June 23rd and final grades and Regents results will be available on the portal. It is NOT our practice to call each student/parent regarding a course or exam fail-ure. Students are expected to review their report card or portal grades and contact their counselor.

Seniors… Final Transcripts will be submitted to colleges after graduation.

If your plans have changed since you talked with your counselor in May, please contact your counselor as soon as possible. You will also receive a copy of your Final Tran-script and Immunization Record with your final Report Card.

The portal will close on July 1st and re-open on Friday, August 26th .

New Hartford Mandarin 2 Student

Makes Trip to China by Meradith Thayer

In the final week of April, a group of juniors and seniors went on a trip to China; myself, Meradith Thayer included. We were able to take part in this trip of a life time due to the amazing opportunity of the BO-CES Mandarin Chinese pro-gram. Being able to learn Man-

darin Chinese was an amazing opportunity, let alone find-ing out I could go to China because of it; how could I say no? The group of 15 students and 4 chaperones, included Mrs. Huo, my amazing Mandarin teacher in New Hartford. We visited the Great Wall of China, the beautiful Beijing and all of its culturally diverse attractions, the Summer Palace, Mao Tse Tsung’s mausoleum, Tiananmen Square, and the location of the Beijing Olympics. After our few days in Beijing, our group rode the extraordinarily fast bul-let train to Xi’an. In Xi’an, we visited the City Wall. Many of the students in the group went on a bike ride around the approximately 9 mile wall, however, a few did not, includ-ing myself. While we were waiting for the ride to be over, I got to experience a traditional bridal photo shoot; fun fact, a few others and myself are in their wedding book. We also visited the Terracotta Warriors; a creepy, yet mystify-ing sight to see. After a day in Xi’an, we went to Chong-qing, where we visited our partner school. Visiting a Chi-nese school was an opportunity I would not otherwise have been able to experience. My trip to China was absolutely amaz-ing, the friends I made while there were amazing, the chaperones I had were absolutely fantastic, and it made me realize what I wanted to study when I go to college. This trip has changed my life, it made me want to try any-thing I possibly can, to learn as much as possible, and travel all over expe-riencing cultures much different than ours.

AP Environmental Science Students Ex-

plore the Environmental Wonders of

Costa Rica

Twenty five AP Environ-

mental Science (APES) stu-

dents spent 10 amazing

days in Costa Rica during

Spring Break. The goal of

the trip was to explore the

ecological wonders of Costa

Rica while being able to

participate in many adven-

ture type activities. By vis-

iting Costa Rica, the class

was able to see their text-

book knowledge in action. Students studied agriculture by

visiting an organic

farm to help pro-

cess sugar cane,

cocoa and coffee,

toured banana

and pineapple

plantations, and

hung out with the

bats at the Bat Jungle. They took several hikes including

one on an old volcano flow and a night hike to see life

after dark. Students got to participate in many adventure

tours like horseback riding, swimming in the falls, can-

yoning, white water rafting, and zip-lining through the rain

forest. As each day went by, students were more amazed

at how a country was able to take a positive environmen-

tal stand and

live more sus-

tainably. After

the trip, stu-

dents now have

a far greater

appreciation

for their sur-

roundings and

the individual

choices they make.
