A SHEFFIELD centre provid-ing families with help and in-formation has closed its doorsfor the last time after its par-ent organisation had its budg-et slashed by the council.

SheffieldInformationLink’sdrop-in shop on Leopold Streetwill no longer be able to helpfamilies looking for advice onhealth, education, disabilityand employment issues.

The charity has been run-ning for 24 years and handlednearly 15,000 inquiries eachyear, helping almost 4,500families.

Its budget for last year wasaround £700,000, with mostof the funding coming from

the city council and a smalleramount provided by Shef-field Children’s Hospital NHSFoundation Trust.

The services it provideshave to be delivered by lawand council officers havetold SIL that some of theirwork will be transferred tothe authority’s main call cen-tre. Other functions may bestopped completely after Sep-tember.

SIL’s budget has been cutby 29 per cent as the councilseeks to save money and has

raised question marks overthe entire future of the organi-sation.

Chief executive SharronBaroudi said her team andcustomers were devastated atthe loss of the drop-in centre.

“Our service is highly val-ued by the city’s families. Ourwell known location allowedpeople to access our specialistservices when it suited themwhile they were in the citycentre,” she said.

“We are being told thatfrontline services won’t be cutbut how much more frontlinecould you get?

“We were here to help witha wide range of expertise that

cannot be found elsewhere;desperate people would comeand see us because they knewwe would have the answers– where will they go now?”

A council spokeswomansaid a new phone service wasnow in place with a face-to-face service beginning in Sep-tember.

Julie Bullen, director ofcustomer services for the citycouncil, said: “This is aboutdelivering a better service inthe most cost effective waypossible.

“This is a direct responseto what customers have toldus about how they want us todeliver services.”

April Bell, who works at flo-rists Monica F Hewitt, is oneof four to reach the finals ofthe Retail Apprentice of theYear category and says shehas enjoyed being able to learnwhilst continuing to work.

The company says it takesmore than nine days, on average,for drivers or fleet managers toreport an incident involving theirvehicle – which could result inhigher maintenance and repaircosts as well as increased unavail-ability of vehicles and drivers.

THEY could be excused for pres-enting themselves with flowers this week.

For staff at Monica F Hewitt Florists in Middlewood Road are celebrating 40 years in business and 17-year-old assistant April Bell making the shortlist for the UK Retail Apprentice of the Year.

Monica Hewitt, who opened the shop 40 years ago this week, is now semi-retired and her daughter, Helen Murray, who started as a Saturday girl, took over six years ago.

Manager Annie Valentine has been part of the team for all but one of those years.

April came to the shop, which is opposite Hillsborough Park, on work experience and joined on leaving school. Working under the supervision of The Source at Meadowhall, she is on a shortlist of three for the apprenticeship awards ceremony in London today (Thursday).

“She is just such a hard worker and everybody she meet adores her,” said Helen.

Photographs from the 40 years are being displayed in the shop and customers are being offered cupcakes to help celebrate the anniversary.

Staple business remains weddings and funerals and the florists have kept in bloom despite many other independent businesses drooping.

“You have to always keep at it but things are good at the moment,” said Helen. “You try to ignore the doom and gloom around you.

“We have been here 40 years and there is no reason why we can’t continue for another 40 years.”

“I love my job and feel Ihave learnt so much over thecourse. I left school early andI’ve always felt a bit shy aboutthe skills I have. I was nerv-ous going back to learning,but I’ve loved every minuteof it.

“My confidence has reallygrown and the chance to studyEnglish and maths using morepractical examples and learnabout how to run a retail busi-ness as well, all whilst work-ing, has been fantastic.”

Retired forger Harry Dobbwent into Chesterfield RoyalHospital with hip pain onJanuary 1, when an X-ray re-vealed a small stress fractureof a hip bone.

The X-ray also showed signsof Paget’s Disease, in which

excessive bone growth resultsin bones becoming weaker,making stress fractures morelikely.

“A day after admission thesituation suddenly changesand there is a marked abnor-mality of the left leg,” patholo-gist Dr Roger Start told theChesterfield inquest.

He said the sizeable frac-ture had become displaced,shortening the left leg.

Mr Dobb, aged 88, of WestStreet, Eckington, was notbelieved to have fallen or suf-fered any injury in hospital,or prior to admission.

“The displaced fracturecould easily have been sus-tained by him sitting up in bedor lifting his leg. It’s less likelyto happen if you are standing

and pressure is exerted verti-cally,” said Dr Start.

Bleeding was evidentaround the fracture, whichhad resulted in bone marrowparticles travelling into thelungs.

Dr Start said Mr Dobb hadsevere bronchitis and emphy-sema, possibly from smoking,and he could ‘ill-afford a fur-ther insult to his lungs’.

He gave the cause of death

as chronic obstructive air-ways disease, contributed toby coronary artery diseaseand a fracture caused byPaget’s Disease.

Deputy North DerbyshireCoroner Nigel Anderson re-corded a verdict of death fromnatural causes, saying: “I’msatisfied on the balance ofprobabilities that the fracturewas due to Paget’s Diseaseand not an accident.”

Business boost as new hub launches5th July 2011

LEISURE and retail training centre The Source has launched a new hub which aims to support businesses.

Sheffield-based The Source has opened The Source Skills Academy Rotherham to offer advice, guidance and training services to Rotherham businesses to increase skills levels and to support trade in the town centre, attracting new investment whilst supporting individuals into employment and training.

Council leader Roger Stone unveiled the facility, which is part of the town’s regeneration strategy.

The project is part-funded by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, the Skills Funding Agency and The Source Skills Academy.

Coun Stone said: “This new hub is an exciting development for Rotherham. Not only will businesses be able to access free support and guidance but the new site is based right in the heart of Rotherham.

“The Source will co-ordinate the new site, with experienced professionals on hand to aid the development of local businesses. I’m sure people will be pleased with what The

Source Skills Academy Rotherham has to offer.”

Local businesses can access a range of opportunities, from apprenticeships, supporting staff in the workplace with flexible learning, to various training courses including Mary Portas Masterclasses and customer service courses.

The service also links with other Rotherham-based support networks and advisors to offer guidance for all aspects of their business.

Ann Cadman, managing director at The Source Skills Academy, said: “The Source was established in 2003 to support businesses across South Yorkshire with training and recruitment guidance and we have come a long way since our initial launch.

“We have now opened our brand new site on the High Street that offers dedicated support to Rotherham businesses. This shows excellent growth for The Source Skills Academy and we are keen to work in partnership with Rotherham organisations with the goal of improving business performance and maximising opportunities in this very difficult climate.”

"First In, Best Dressed", is the first shop of its kind in the country.

The country's first charity shop, run entirely by student apprentices, has opened in Sheffield.

"First In, Best Dressed" opened this morning in the city centre.

The idea is to give students more chances in business, retail and management.

It's a joint project by Sheffield Showcase, Source Skills Academy, Sheffield City Council and the Skills Funding Agency.

The shop also hopes to raise a lot of money for different charities in the city and will allow the public to nominate their favourite charity every 3 months. The first charity will be Autism Plus.

Council Leader, Julie Dore, opened the shop and said; "..I think it's an absolutely fantastic scheme. It's not just because, obviously it's filling up empty shops, because we all know no one likes to see empty shops, particularly in a fastastic city centre like we've got in Sheffield, but it's also that the work they do with young people and enabling young people to learn, to gain experience and work with the best designers, artists, retailers and it's sort of that mix what it covers both angles - it's filling empty shops but it's also working with young people.....we've all got favourite charities...the fact that you're choosing different charities, I just think it's a fantastic idea..."

First in Best Dressed, based on Cambridge Street, is a

brand new charity shop that aims

to develop apprentices by giving them practical

experience of running a business as well as raising money

for local charities.

A number of charities will each gain for three months

from the shop’s profits and Autism Plus will be the charity

Council Leader and supporter of the project, Julie Dore

unveiled First in Best Dressed on Friday (9 September).

The project is supported by Sheffield City Council, the

Julie Dore said: “This is an excellent project, supporting

local charities, young people and revitalising an empty

unit in the city centre. By donating your unwanted items,

you are providing the fuel to develop young people and

raising vital funds for local charities. I’m sure people will

be pleased with what First In Best Dressed has to offer;

The Source skills academy are making changes to the way they work in order to help the environment.

The Source, located next to Meadowhall shopping centre, have taken advice from their employees and customers

and are making changes such as installing light sensors.

The skills academy are also encouraging their staff to cycle to work, donating computers to those in need in Africa

and also making sure computers and monitors are switched off rather than being left on standby.

The business believes that making these small changes to their workplace will in turn help the environment.

Hopefully other business will do the same and make a bigger impact on our environment.

Sheffield hallam Univer-sity is to rename one of itsflagship buildings after thecity’s most famous furnituredesigners and philanthro-pists, the Cantor family.

The award-winning buildingon furnival Street – previouslyknown as the furnival Build-ing – houses the University’sarts, computing, engineeringand sciences faculty.

it will be named the CantorBuilding, in recognition of asignificant donation from theh and l Cantor Trust.

The Cantor family name issynonymous in the city withhigh quality design, and itwas the late harold Cantor’swish to create a legacy whichprovided enduring benefits

to Sheffield and its communi-ties, by investing in its crea-tivity and innovation.

The trust’s donation will beinvested directly in studentactivities and services.

The building itself recent-ly housed exhibits from theuniversity’s acclaimed Crea-tive Spark exhibition, andincludes two galleries whichare open to the public, provid-ing real benefits for both stu-dents and residents alike.

The Cantor family begantrading in 1920 and theirfamous furniture divisionopened its first store in Shef-field in 1927.

First in – Best Dressed,on Cambridge Street, is of-fering apprentices practicalexperience of running abusiness as well as raisingmoney for charities.

The store is supporting aparticular charity for threemonths at a time, startingwith Autism Plus.

Sheffield Councilleader, Coun Julie Dore,who opened the store, said:“This is an excellent project,supporting local charities,young people and revitalis-ing an empty unit in the city

centre. By donating yourunwanted items, you areproviding the fuel to developyoung people and raisingvital funds for charities.”

The shop, created in oneof the units emptied for theSevenstone new retail quar-ter, will be open for at leastthe next two years until themajor project goes ahead.

A JOBS fair at The Source near Meadowhall in Sheffield tonight is offering paid apprenticeships to young people.

Employers in the fields of business administration, customer service, hospitality, warehousing, engineering, motor mechanics, hair and beauty and construction will be at The Source Skills Academy’s Open Evening.

They will be looking for young people aged 16 and above who are enthusiastic and eager to learn.

SCHOOL leavers in Sheffield are being urged to snap up the last few places on a new free course running this summer.

National Citizen Service - NCS - is a scheme run by the Prince’s Trust for Year 11 leavers.

It teaches them new skills, encourages them to challenge themselves and make a positive impact in their community during the summer holidays.

Sam Kennedy, Prince’s Trust regional director for Yorkshire and The Humber, said: “Places are going quickly for this course which is set to start in just a few weeks’ time.

“As another school year comes to a close, parents across Sheffield are sure to be making last-minute plans to keep their kids entertained during the summer holidays.

“NCS is an ideal way for them to spend their time taking part in a range of activities to help build their skills confidence for future employment or further education.

“The public perception has often been that youngsters offer very little to the community. NCS is the perfect opportunity for young people to prove them wrong.”

Young people will design a project to benefit their local area as well as going on two team-building residential weeks, taking part in outdoor challenges and group activities.

NCS will be run with The Prince’s Trust and The Source in Sheffield, starting on July 4. It is a coalition government scheme to be piloted across the UK this summer.

Two apprentices from The Source Skills Academy, Sheffield, have won awards at the Skillsmart Retail Rising Star Awards.

Apprentice of the Year April Bell, and HR Professional of the Year Laura Guest celebrated their wins at the prestigious Awards.

April Bell, an Intermediate Level apprentice with The Source Skills Academy, won the Apprentice of the Year award and Laura Guest an Advanced Level apprentice was recognised as the HR Professional of the Year at the Awards, held at London’s glitzy Grosvenor House Hotel on 9th September.

April and Laura who work at Monica F Hewitt Florists Hillsborough, and House of Fraser Meadowhall respectively, triumphed over stiff competition at the award ceremony.

The Skillsmart Retail Rising Stars Awards are designed to recognise the best talent in all areas of retail, from star apprentices to top-notch marketeers and buyers, all demonstrating outstanding talent, aptitude and initiative in their roles – singling them out as the ones to watch for the future.

Dragon's Den star and retail heavyweight, Theo Paphitis, helped open the show with a speech that kept the crowd entertained. He once again praised all the rising stars in retail and commended the retail sector as a whole with how they have dealt with trading conditions over the last year. Comedian Russell Kane later entertained around 500 of the sector's rising stars, with the celebrations lasting until the early hours.

With a record number of entries, this year the judges found it harder than ever to reach their final decisions, so congratulations to all who were successful.

The Source Skills Academy Managing Director Ann Cadman said: “The prestigious awards are fantastic recognition for our learners. April and Laura are worthy winners, demonstrating retail excellence in their roles. We are very proud to celebrate their achievements – they really are our rising stars!”

Skillsmart Retail and the National Skills Academy for Retail have teamed up with independent retailers and trade associations around the country to encourage the public to celebrate diversity on the high street and support their local, independent retailers.

Rotherham is backing the campaign with a host of activities organised be the council’s Business and Retail Investment Team from 11am in the new events area in from on the Markets Complex. Rotherham’s New Mayor will be on hand at 12.30pm to sign people up to the Shop Local scheme and see first-hand the variety of goods on offer at the markets.

There will be music, entertainment and lots of giveaway including the chance to win one of two £50 hampers. The Source, which opened a skills academy in Rotherham this week, are offering a free taster session for Mary Portas and WorldHost course on July the 4th. This looks to be a great day for all and a great opportunity to encourage people to support their local retailers. The full day will be held on the 4th of July which is this coming Monday.

With just over three weeks until the entry deadline for one of the region’s leading business award ceremonies, The Source have encouraged South Yorkshire companies to bid for success after enjoying glory last year.

The Source were honoured with the much-coveted Business of the Year Award at the 2010 Barnsley & Rotherham Business Awards and businesses have until Friday 23 September to submit their entry for the 2011 ceremony, which takes place at Rotherham’s Magna Centre on Friday 21 October.

There are 10 prestigious prizes available, plus the Business of the Year trophy which The Source claimed last time out. We had worked hard to reach out to a wider audience in the region and the awards achievement demonstrated our successes.

The stars of retail were celebrated last week at the Skillsmart Retail Rising Stars Awards, held at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel.

The cream of talent from across the UK came together for the annual awards ceremony, with star guest Theo Paphitis, to find out who would take home the honours.

Almost 80 people and teams from a range of businesses and skills shops across the country battled it out in 17 categories, hoping to get their hands on one of the much sought after trophies.

We caught up with “Skillsmart Retail Apprentice of the Year” 17-year-old April Bell who works for Monica F Hewitt Florists in Sheffield. April is working towards a Level 2 apprenticeship in Retail with The Source Skills Academy in Sheffield.

April said: “I had convinced myself that I hadn’t won it, I was seated next to Theo Paphitis and thought, well, whatever happens I’ve had a right good night!

“I’m just waiting for my results in English, and then hopefully I can go onto Level 3. I’m hoping to study for some First Aid qualifications too. My ambition is to get properly trained and qualified, then one day I’d like to have my own florists. I’d love that.”

The Source Skills Academy is based in Meadowhall shopping centre.

Managing Director Ann Cadman told FE Week: “The Rising Star Awards are among the most prestigious awards in the Retail Sector. We are delighted for April and to be crowned Retail Apprentice of the Year is great testament to her hard work and dedication. April truly is a rising star and we are proud to celebrate her achievement.”

Dragons’ Den star Theo Paphitis said: “Winning the Apprentice of the Year Award is a massive achievement. The competition was of a very high standard and April is a great example of the drive, commitment, enthusiasm and sheer passion required to make it in retail.

“April shows every sign of becoming one of tomorrow’s retail leaders and I look forward to seeing her develop her career in what I believe to be the most dynamic and exciting industry.”

"First In, Best Dressed", is the first shop of its kind in the country.

The country's first charity shop, run entirely by student apprentices,has opened in Sheffield.

"First In, Best Dressed" opened this morning in the city centre.

The idea is to give students more chances in business, retail and management.

It's a joint project by Sheffield Showcase, Source Skills Academy, Sheffield City Council and the Skills Funding Agency.

The shop also hopes to raise a lot of money for different charities in the city and will allow the public to nominate their favourite charity every 3 months. The first charity will be Autism Plus.

Council Leader, Julie Dore, opened the shop and said; "..I think it's anabsolutely fantastic scheme. It's not just because, obviously it's filling upempty shops, because we all know no one likes to see empty shops,particularly in a fastastic city centre like we've got in Sheffield, but it's alsothat the work they do with young people and enabling young people tolearn, to gain experience and work with the best designers, artists,retailers and it's sort of that mix what it covers both angles - it's fillingempty shops but it's also working with young people.....we've all gotfavourite charities...the fact that you're choosing different charities, I justthink it's a fantastic idea..."

Dear all,

Last week’s Skillsm art Retail Rising Stars Aw ards ceremony went very well. With over 400 people, it was a fantastic night enjoyed by all our guests. We were very proud to have such excellent finalists in the National Skills Academy for Retail categories, which help raise the reputation of the awards as a unique opportunity to celebrate excellence.

As a judge, it was hugely difficult to choose winners from such high calibre finalists, but decisions had to be made and our very worthy winners were:

The events team is looking forward to an action packed autumn of back-to-back events, including next week’s Mary Portas guide to successful retailing annual conference, followed by a glitzy drinks reception for competition and scholarship winners. The Employer Conference draws ever closer and we’ve been chasing up high profile retailers to ensure this is the best attended event ever. The team has also been working hard to deliver an event to celebrate the launch of the National Skills Academy for Retail in Wales which has meant lots of liaising with the Welsh Assembly.

Rising stars of retail shine at awards night09/09/2011

After a summer of retail rocked by rioting, wet weather, consumer caution and sliding sales a night celebrating what is good in retail was well needed. Retail Week’s Rising Star Awards aim to do just that. Unlike the magazine’s flagship annual and hugely successful Retail Week Awards the Rising Star Awards celebrate not the legends of today but, as the name aptly describes, the talent of tomorrow.

Held last night at the Grosvenor in London’s Park Lane the awards recognised the rising stars in 17 categories overall – from best area manager to Retail Week’s overall Rising star of the year. But as Dragon’s Den star and retail guru Theo Paphitis, guest speaker for the evening said in his opening speech it wasn’t just the winners of the night who should be celebrating what they had done.

“For all of you here today you are the cream of the crop and the leaders of tomorrow. Just being here is an achievement,” he said. And quoting a line from his favourite TV show — not Dragon’s Den – he said the talent in the room had much to look forward to. “Thirty years ago tonight was the first episode of my favourite TV programme –Only Fools and Horses. So in the words of the biggest trader of all – enjoy tonight. This time next year you could be millionaires.”

Paphitis may have been joking of course but as an entrepreneur himself he more than most will recognise the truth of such words. The individuals recognised and indeed shortlisted for awards such as those held by Retail Week last night all demonstrate a similar trait which retail so desperately needs in the current climate – the passion and drive to succeed and be successful.

If such rising stars can shine in times such as these they will be much sought after and it could well be that in amongst those rising stars are some Theos of the future who will deliver the new concepts and retail models that will ensure

The Skillsmart Retail Rising Stars Awards 2011 took place yesterday (Thursday 8 September) at London's Grosvenor House Hotel. Organised by Retail Week and sponsored by Skillsmart Retail, the annual awards celebrate all areas of retail, from the shop floor to head office, and the individuals who demonstrate outstanding talent, aptitude and initiative in their roles.Winners in the Skillsmart Retail and National Skills Academy for Retail categories included April Bell of Monica F. Hewitt Florists in Sheffield for the Skillsmart Retail Apprentice of the Year category and Suzanne Burnett of Marks & Spencer in London for the National Skills Academy for Retail Ambassador of the Year category.Skillsmart Retail Patron and Apprentice Champion, and Dragons’ Den star Theo Paphitis commented: 'I congratulate all of the finalists in the Skillsmart Retail Rising Stars Awards. News: Independents' Day in Rotherham

Local retailers in Rotherham will be celebrating Independents' Day on July 4.

Skillsmart Retail and the National Skills Academy for Retail have teamed up withindependent retailers and trade associations around the country to encourage thepublic to celebrate diversity on the high street and support their local, independentretailers.

Rotherham is backing the campaign with a host of activities organised by thecouncil's Business & Retail Investment Team from 11am in the new events area infront of the Markets Complex. Rotherham's new Mayor will be on hand at12.30pm to sign people up to our Shop Local scheme and see first-hand thevariety of goods on offer at the markets.

There'll be music, entertainment and lots of giveaways too including the chance towin one of two £50 hampers.

The Source, which opened a skills academy in Rotherham this week, are offeringa free Taster Session for Mary Portas and WorldHost courses on July 4.

Anne Seaman, Chief Executive of Skillsmart Retail said: "We are delighted to leadthis campaign and support small retailers. Raising awareness amongst the publicis one of the biggest challenges smaller retailers face and our message is aboutencouraging the public to use their local high street and understand how importanta diverse retail sector is."

Coun. Gerald Smith, Town Centre Cabinet Member for Rotherham BoroughCouncil, added: "Rotherham prides itself on its range of diverse independentshops and so is well placed to take part in the national Independents' Day. Wehave some great shops and market stalls and the Shop Local scheme has provedto be really popular, receiving huge support from the shopping public.

"They have discovered that anyone who Shops Local will get value for money fordistinctive quality products and services as well as excellent customer service.They will also be boosting the local economy and employment."

Rotherham town centre has 154 independent and specialist shops, including 14new retailers who have taken advantage of the Town Centre Vitality GrantScheme. The indoor market is home to 80 independent traders and the outdoormarket attracts a further 120 independent traders throughout the week.

The Source Skills Academy is coming to Rotherham! Their focus is to offer specialist support tolocal businesses, schools and thelocal community.

Currently based at Meadowhall and Voted Business of the Year at the Barnsley & RotherhamBusiness Awards in October 2010, The Source is keen to expand its operation with a permanentbase in Rotherham on High Street, allowing easy access for both businesses andindividualslooking for help.

The Rotherham Skills Academy is a new venture designed to offer advice, guidance and trainingservices to Rotherham businesses, to increase skills levels and to support trade in the towncentre, thereby attracting new investment. The Source Skills Academy’s Zara-Louise competes amongst the best at Miss Earth.Zara-Louise Gold-Manyou (22) made it to the national finals of Miss Earth, held in Birmingham this week. The aim of the pageant is to choose a candidate to actively promote the preservation of the environment.

On the night the judges were particularly impressed with her commitment to environmental campaigns and also paid close attention to the unique style of the dresses worn on the night.

Zara-Louise, who works at The Source Skills Academy, Sheffield said: “The competition was amazing. I felt proud to represent Sheffield people and their positive contributions towards the environment. I was ecstatic when the judges commented on my environmental projects and on the dresses I wore on the night. “

The dresses are the brainchild of local fashion designer Kerry Potts who is soon to open her retail store, Leather n Lime in Hillsborough.

Dress Sponsor Kerry Potts said “It was great to see my handy work up on the stage. We only make ‘one off’ outfits for our customers and I think that’s why the judges felt the dress was unique. Zara was one of our Facebook customers and when she asked us to sponsor her I jumped at the chance. Being a local company it was fantastic to gain recognition for our work in a national competition.”

Prior to the competition Zara-Louise raised environmental awareness in local schools and communities and this year has raised over £1500 for local charities.

Zara made it through to the final stage of the competition however missed out on the prestigious Miss Earth Crown. The overall winner of Miss Earth will be an ambassador for environmental protection campaigns worldwide.

The stars of retail were celebrated last night at Skillsmart Retail Rising Stars Awards, held at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel.

The cream of retail talent from across the UK came together for the annual awards ceremony, with star guest Theo Paphitis, to find out who would be named the best talent in retail.

The prestigious annual awards, organised by Retail Week and sponsored by Skillsmart Retail, celebrate all areas of retail, from the shop-floor to head office, and the individuals who demonstrate outstanding talent, aptitude and initiative in their roles – singling them out as the ones to watch for the future.

Almost 80 people and teams from a range of businesses and skills shops across the country battled it out in 17 categories, hoping to get their hands on one of the much sought after trophies.

Skillsmart Retail Rising Stars Awards

The Skillsmart Retail Rising Stars Awards 2011 celebrated the best of the best talent in all areas of retail. Organised by Retail Week and sponsored by Skillsmart Retail, the awards recognised the individuals who have demonstrated outstanding talent, aptitude and initiative in their roles – singling them out as the ones to watch for the future.

The cream of retail talent from across the UK came together for the annual awards ceremony, with star guest Theo Paphitis, on 8 September at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London.

Almost 80 people and teams from a range of businesses and skills shops battled it out in 17 categories, hoping to get their hands on the much sought after trophies.

The stars of retail were recently celebrated at Skillsmart Retail Rising Stars A wards, held at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel.

The Source scoops national rising star awards

Apprentice of the Year 2011 April Bell, Two trainees from The Source Skills Academy have won awards at the Skillsmart Retail Rising Star Awards. Apprentice of the Year April Bell, and HR Professional of the Year Laura Guest celebrated their wins at the prestigious Awards.

April Bell, an apprentice with The Source Skills Academy, won the Apprentice of the Year award

and Laura Guest was recognised as the HR Professional of the Year at the Awards, held at

London's glitzy Grosvenor House Hotel on 9th September.

April and Laura who work at Monica F Hewitt Florists Hillsborough, and House of Fraser

Meadowhall respectively, triumphed over stiff competition at the award ceremony.

The Skillsmart Retail Rising Stars Awards are designed to recognise the best talent in all areas

of retail, from star apprentices to top-notch marketeers and buyers, all demonstrating

outstanding talent, aptitude and initiative in their roles - singling them out as the ones to watch

for the future.

Dragon's Den star and retail heavyweight, Theo Paphitis, helped open the show with a speech

that kept the crowd entertained. He once again praised all the rising stars in retail and

commended the retail sector as a whole with how they have dealt with trading conditions over

the last year. Comedian Russell Kane later entertained around 500 of the sector's rising stars,

with the celebrations lasting until the early hours.

With a record number of entries, this year the judges found it harder than ever to reach their

final decisions, so congratulations to all who were successful.

The Source Skills Academy managing director Ann Cadman said: "The prestigious awards are

A SEVENTEEN-year-old apprentice from Sheffield has been shortlisted for a Skillsmart Retail Rising Stars Award.

April Bell, who works at florists Monica F Hewitt, is one of four to reach the finals of the Retail Apprentice of the Year category and says she has enjoyed being able to learn whilst continuing to work.

The retail apprentice, who is training at The Source Skills Academy at Meadowhall, said: “I left school earlier and I’ve always felt a bit shy about the skills I have. I was nervous going back to learning, but I’ve loved every minute of it. My confidence has really grown.”

FORGET April showers - the future’s all about April’s Flowers.

Take a bow April Bell a Sheffield teenager who has been named Skillsmart Retail Apprentice of the Year.

April, who works at Monica F Hewitt florists in the city, scooped top prize at the Skillsmart Retail Rising Stars Awards, held at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel.

The 17-year-old of Hillsborough, beat off tough competition to win the title and was awarded her trophy by Dragons’ Den star Theo Paphitis.

Theo said: “Winning the Apprentice of the Year Award is a massive achievement. The competition was of a very high standard and April is a great example of the drive, commitment, enthusiasm and sheer passion required to make it in retail.

“April shows every sign of becoming one of tomorrow’s retail leaders and I look forward to seeing her develop her career in what I believe to be the most dynamic and exciting industry.”

Judges noted April’s passion for floristry and development over her apprenticeship, particularly her confidence and the improvements she had implemented in the shop.

April said: “I am so happy and excited I have won - it was completely unexpected.

“I love my job and feel I have learnt so much over the course. I left school early and I’ve always felt a bit shy about the skills I have. I was nervous going back to learning, but I’ve loved every minute of it.

“My confidence has really grown and the chance to study English and maths using more practical examples and learn about how to run a retail business as well, all whilst working, has been fantastic.”

The former Ecclesfield and Yewlands School girl also met a whole host of MPs.

“I was lucky enough to have a look around the House of Parliament as a guest of David Blunkett,” she said.

Benchmarking selected to drive up the performance of retailers and enhance staff skills

Winning Moves is partnering with the National Skills Academy for Retail (NSAfR) and the Source in Sheffield on a project aimed at supporting retail businesses in the UK. This important work is being funded by the Learning and Skills Improvement Service.

Retail is as tough a space to operate in as any other sector you can think of right now. Its importance to the economy is obvious when you consider that it is the largest private sector employer in the UK with 291,000 businesses, three million employees and an annual turnover of £265 billion.

NSAfR plays a key role in developing and marketing skills and qualifications for current and future employees within this vast sector. They do this through offering access to consistent, high quality training and support through a network of quality-marked retail skills shops. The Source is a £5.5 million state of the art training and development facility. Established in 2003, they are a recognised centre of excellence based in South Yorkshire, providing expert support to employers.

Our brief is to develop a methodology for improving the skills of individuals employed in the industry. At the same time, the challenge has been set to make the direct link between improved staff competence and business performance, resulting in improving the commercial results of the employing businesses.

This project will lead to stronger management, more profitable sales, lower costs, an enhanced customer experience, a differentiated offer for participants to stand out from the crowd, and, perhaps most importantly, improved skills for those at the cutting edge of retail organisations.

Winning Moves expertise in developing powerful, impactful business support tools that make a real difference, allied to the retail industry knowledge provided by NSAfR and the Source, will result in an invaluable, sustainable resource for retailers. The service will be underpinned by our Benchmark Index database of more than 100,000 sets of business data, including more than 17,000 from the retail sector.

Building on a highly effective model originally developed by us for the National Skills Academy for Construction, benchmarking is a proven, highly effective way to learn new and better ways of achieving better results. We will initially establish the blueprint to be a successful retailer, build a framework of the key processes involved aligned to the Mary Portas Master class model, and finally identify performance measures that will help manage these. The service will be piloted during the spring of 2011 with full roll out expected during the summer, so watch this space!
