500. How the hell did we get here? 500 times we’ve sweated over the deadline, argued about the cover, debated if we should say @#$* in the intro and weighed our options about slagging off the villain de-jour.But you know what - every late night design marathon, every last minute scribbled word, every beer with an advertiser, every heart to heart with a reader who has an idea to make the mag better, every interview with an artist that just wants to be heard, every new writer who just wants to be read, every time publishing changed, the tears of loss, the embrace of joy, the good, the bad, the really bad and the really good - all of it - every moment all adds up to what you are holding in your hands and we wouldn’t trade a second of any of it.To everyone who’ve helped The Source along the way - advertisers, writers, photographers, artists, contributors, delivery people, musicians and most of all you, our readers, we would not be here without you. FIRST THERE WAS A GUY CALLED BRENDAN. HE TURNED UP WITH AN IDEA FOR WEEKLY A GIG GUIDE AND SET THE BALL ROLLING. Back in those days; we’re talking 1998, The Source was just a photocopied single sheet of A3 supported by a few willing bars and some retailers. Nobody seems to know what happened to Brendan, he sold the gig to Bones and left town. Or at least that’s how Bones tells it. Cut-throat game this publishing lark.Bones stepped it up a notch and introduced a slightly classier level of printing. The paper went posh too. Then Bones cashed in his fortune and passed the mantle to Luke who ran the show for a couple of seasons. Back then the Wolf was howling at Council about closing times, Scotty was a regular contributor and the carpet at Chico’s was where the live action was at.Then in the early 00’s Jenny, Karlin and Tim took over the reigns for a stint. Introducing hEvan’s Horrorscopes and witnessing the launch of the LWB; It’ll never last we said... I think we also predicted the early demise of Fergburger once they moved out of Cow Lane...Further reshuffles at the top of this

notorious publishing powerhouse saw Jenny move back to the UK, then Karlin shooting off up to Nelson leaving Tim to fend off the lawyers from NewsCorp.Carly stepped in as a manager for a couple of years steadying the ship, Kirsten joined the team and then along came publishing heavy-hitters Rich and Ingrid.A design rethink, a move to a monthly entertainment mag and Carly’s dash to the UK to work for the family record label brought about a new era of full colour, colourful writers and regular complaints from visitors from the US. We also discovered Si’s secret poetry talents. Awesome.Next up, in 2013 Scott and Sophie joined Tim and Kirsten at the helm and whipped this rag along the back straight to the 500 marker...So where to from here? Good question. Do we keep going with the themes? Do we get that Helen Clarke interview? Do we zombie-flash-mob the next presidential visit? Do we send Justin Beiber an envelop full of ginger pubes? Big questions folks and if you’ve got any thoughts we’d love to hear them. Here’s to the next 500 (minutes of your life) make ‘em count.

UNDERWELMINGLY GREAT.CONTRARY TO COMMON THOUGHT, ONE OF THE MOST UNDERWHELMING MOMENTS IN LIFE CAN COME AFTER REACHING A SIGNIFICANT MILESTONE. NOT TO SAY THAT MILESTONES ARE BAD. THEY’RE NOT AT ALL. ONE OF THE GREATEST JOYS IN THE WORLD CAN BE THE MOMENT WHEN A GOAL THAT’S BEEN DREAMED OF FOR YEARS IS ACHIEVED, BUT IT’S ALSO IMPORTANT TO HAVE THE NEXT MILESTONE IN MIND.This philosophy is often not followed in Queenstown. Many people living here took on a huge challenge by travelling thousands of miles to get here without knowing anyone. They found a job, new friends and a place to live amidst the most beautiful scenery in the world. They set up a life. But then they stopped looking for new challenges, new milestones. The life they set up becomes mundane.“You stop seeing the beauty in Queenstown because you get stuck in a rut of work and going out to the same places” said Hannah Sampson-Barry, an England native

who has spent the last year living in Queenstown. “Not saving and not having anything to show for your time can be a huge drawback. You forget to look up and see how incredible it is.”What is bad is the expectation that the achievement of a milestone will bring ease and tranquility to a once challenge-ridden life. This will lead to disappointment. That’s why the best way to live is to allow for a short period of time to enjoy a reached milestone, find a new one to reach, work until it is met - and repeat.This is supported by scientific research. John Salamone, a professor at the University of Connecticut in the United States, recently conducted research that shows that dopamine (the chemical in the brain responsible for feeling happy) is released once a satisfying reward is earned, as well as while the work is being done to earn it.At the end of next month Sampson-Barry will be leaving Queenstown to attend the University of Canterbury in Christchurch. She is ready to reach a new milestone and to, once again, see her place in life as incredible.

THERE’S MUCH TALK THESE DAYS AROUND THE RESURGENCE OF THE VINYL RECORD - SOME HAVE FOUND THIS MEDIUM FOR THE FIRST TIME, OTHERS HAVE REDISCOVERED IT AND FOR MANY IT NEVER WENT AWAY. POSSIBLY THIS RESURGENCE COULD SIMPLY BE THE JOY OF HAVING THE PHYSICAL ARTEFACT, BRINGING A FEELING OF TRUE CONNECTION TO THE MUSIC, ONE THAT CAN BE LOST ON THE INFINITELY MORE CONVENIENT AND ACCESSIBLE DIGITAL FILE.But what happens when the physical is damaged beyond repair - all but lost to the owner who has spent so much time finding and caring for it? And what happens when that loss is on an immense scale?One morning in April of 2014 at 7am black music specialist Danny Lemon received a text message about a fire at his storage facility. Along with some personal belongings - clothes, photographs, etc., the unit contained boxes stacked to the ceiling, holding the majority of Danny’s collection of jazz, jazz funk, house and reggae, including seven or eight boxes of 7” singles. Having lost a collection of 200 odd records to a London thief in 1980, the bulk of this collection had been

sourced from overseas via mail order, friends and from local NZ record shops.Along with the 8,500 odd records incinerated around 200 Black Music, Echoes and Blues and Soul magazines, catalogues, fanzines, private lists and his cassette tape collection supplied from other fanatics like himself he’d teamed up with locally and afar from the mid eighties were lost. This collection was the foundation of Danny’s vast musical knowledge.Local Kingston photographer and long time friend of Danny’s, Philippa O’Brien documented the heartbreaking clean-up on medium format film and later undertook a studio shoot of individual burnt

artefacts.Whilst the physical loss was apparent and often too raw to process, these music colleagues consistently reminded Danny what counted was the musical knowledge that he had in abundance.

These friends and other lovers of music gathered to mark the loss a cultural treasure playing all night in solidarity. Philippa’s images alongside Danny Lemon’s Authentic Selection poster made up of the studio shots were on display and available to help support Danny in rebuilding some of this collection.

Eighteen challenging months later The Sherwood are helping to bring the photography, music and knowledge of Danny to a new audience.

The exhibition will have an opening at 5pm on Thursday 18th Feb with a Danny Lemon DJ set following from 7.

Then on Saturday afternoon there will be “A Discussion on Record Collecting with Danny Lemon”. This workshop discussion with Danny is likely to encompass topics such as artists and producers, mood and politics of the time and anything else that comes to mind - it is set to become a journey into black music. With the turn of the new year I’ve noticed a few trail blazers attempt digital diets and good on them… but what is it about physical media that can now be appreciated with such a milestone…?These papers you hold in your hands right now are your first steps in joining in on the amnesty and with that thought in mind let’s take a moment to give the team at The Source the biggest lyrical birthday cake possible.Putting 500 editions into perspective you have to admire what this magazine has offered to our community over the years. 200,000 YEARS AGO HOMO SAPIENS SHOWED UP. AN AFFLICTION ON THE EARTH FROM THE BEGINNING, THIS SINGLE SPECIES HAS DESTROYED FORESTS, THE OZONE LAYER AND INNUMERABLE OTHER SPECIES AS WELL AS CREATING NINETIES POP MUSIC. 200,000 and a bit years ago: Fire! HERB INFUSED BUTTERButter. Who doesn’t like butter? (sorry Derek)

Butter makes the world go round, add it to anything and it tastes awesome. The great thing about butter is you can add stuff to butter and make it even better. Basil, parsley - really any old herb you find lying around. The great thing about infusing butter with herbs is that you can add that butter to anything and you get the herbal benefits for all your cooking and baking needs.

INGREDIENTS:1/4 ounce herbs, finely ground 1/2 cup (one stick) unsalted butter

1. Melt the butter on low heat in a medium saucepan.2. Add the ground herbs to the melted butter a little bit at a time, stirring in between.3. Simmer on a low heat for 45 mins, stirring frequently. While simmering, you should start to see small bubbles forming on the surface.4. After simmering for 45 mins, strain the butter into a container using a metal strainer to filter out the ground herbs.5. Press a spoon against the ground herbs in the metal strainer to squeeze all the herb-butter.

The herb-butter in the container should have a slightly green tinge from the herbs. Happy baking!

The Queen - His majesty now resides in a pink blow-up castle somewhere in inner city Melbourne. He continues to be the most fabulous ****er on the tram and if you disagree, he will beat you down like the bitch you are. Adam - Our token ‘Merican moved back to the motherland where he works as an Austin Hipster, still maintaining his Zumba street cred and beard that you want to build a nest in and raise puppies. Ned Myopus - Sadly Ned ran into Visa issues and was deported back to his native... um actually we’re not sure where. Rumour has it he has opened a small bar catering to art rock reprobates. Business is apparently not going well.The Wolf - Dissatisfied with the quality of New Zealand beer, our former resident beer expert now only drinks his own homebrew and is unwilling to share. Carley - She put a ring on her squeeze and is owning the decks in London-Town. Russell - After the Christmas party he stopped returning our calls. We still have your pants BTW. Dugi - The growing discontent of the utter shitfullness of mainstream

music was too much for him to take. He’s gone underground, only surfacing when the DBs are high enough. Average Jo - She’s gone and spawned a second generation - by all accounts the babe looks totally average. Rire - Floating like a butterfly in the rarified AK air - she’s throwing beats in the mystical scene and is still very tall. TO CELEBRATE A PERSONAL MILESTONE IS TO ERECT A TINY TOMBSTONE MARKING THE WAY TO OUR OWN MORTALITY. Here Lieth My Twenties I should’ve taken more drugs.The death of the child the birth of the adult, the death of the ‘me’ the birth of the ‘us’. Every time, we kill a little bit of ourselves off with a helium balloon attached to a basket of cupcakes and a packet of party poppers from the dollar store. Each milestone is meant to mark the point at which we transition from one state to another. Leave behind the old, embrace the new, emerge like a butterfly into the brave new world. I emerge at about 3pm with the fear and the DTs. It’s okay though, my forties will be different.How does it feel to wake up 18-21-30-40-50-married?Please see previous comment.You may have noticed I’m not a fan of personal milestones. There’s the pressure and expectation of family and friends and it’s because we look forwards in time towards them.

COME ONI’VE BEEN HERE TEN YEARS THIS YEAR. TEN YEARS IN THIS SMALL CITY, BIG TOWN PLACE WITH IT’S MOUNTAINS AND FRESH VIEWS. IT’S TRIPLED-IN-SIZE MENTALITY AND THE QUEUE AT FERGBURGER. I came to this fair land at an age (a mere 26) when the important things were where do I get a decent haircut and was it really warmer in the old Pig and Whistle than my house? My, my, my what a difference. I have the same hair (maybe a bit less - I found a good hairdresser) the same skin (maybe a bit more frazzled) but my mind has been altered just as this wonderful little magazine has altered many of your experiences here in Queenstown. I remember the day I landed - as you all will. I walked up and down the streets (that still look the same and I still forget which street the casino is on) and I wondered “how will I remember where everything is?” Looking back I laugh at my naivety, my wonder, my amazement at how could a world be so beautiful, so clear, so fresh and so small

all at the same time. I still have those same thoughts as I open to my eyes on the drive to work. The streets are busier, the traffic enough to make you scream but the air is still crisp, the trails are still quiet. The music and arts scene has got better, the community and connections have all grown wider and more beautiful. There’s a hum of chatter about the way the town is heading from tourists to car hire, from traffic to coffee shops being knocked down and moved on. We have fighting spirit, we love a good argument. We can all argue one minute about the colour of a building (Camp Street salmon pink anyone) then settle down to all talk about our love of a good Central Otago pinot the next. That’s what makes us so gorgeous, so different, still full of youth as we see where and what this town can do next. I love this town as I do what The Source is doing out here. Being bold, being fresh and being alive. That’s Queenstown all over.

ABOUT: The Bath House sits elegantly in the afternoon sun right on the shores of Lake Wakatipu. This beachside restaurant and bar has been a Queenstown landmark since it was built to commemorate the coronation of King George V in 1911. It was originally constructed with changing rooms for the modest swimmers of the day but has become a local favourite for tapas, freshly-cooked food and of course a great selection of wines. The service is outstanding and the location is probably the best there is in or out of town.SPECIALTIES: Breakfast, lunch and really great scones.SOURCE SAYS: If you want to step away from the hubbub of downtown it’s a two minute stroll along the Parade to this cosy, warm, lakeside hideaway.

GONE ARE THE DAYS OF THE GARAGE, FRIENDLY VISITS FROM NOISE CONTROL AND THE UTTER DESPAIR OF PLAYING ROCK AND ROLL AT AN EMBARRASSINGLY LOW VOLUME. Enter the Reverb Sound Kitchen - brought to you by the fine folk of the Wakatipu Youth Trust. The Reverb Sound Kitchen is an alternative space for young people aged 15-24 to use as a home to create and play music. On Friday nights when The Booth closes, the space transforms into a muso cafe. With this comes an opportunity for young people to jump on stage with their instruments and perform their music, as well as opportunities for guest artists

and mentoring. The space is already being taken advantage of by many a local junior muso, with more joining in all the time. So if you’re sub 25, looking for a place to jam and make art in a cool and supportive space get amongst it. Same goes if you know the way around the blocks and want to give something back - the next generation would be stoked to hear from you. IT’S OUR BIRTHDAY, WE DON’T LOOK A DAY OVER 300, BUT TRUTH IS WE’RE 500. WHAT BETTER WAY TO CELEBRATE THAN A COCKTAIL THAT WILL MAKE US FEEL LIKE A 15 YEAR OLD GIRL.

INGREDIENTS60ml /2 oz whipped vodka 45ml /1.5 oz amaretto 30ml /1 oz white chocolate liqueur 60ml /2 oz cream 100s and 1000s Honey

DIRECTIONSBegin with two shallow dishes. To one, add a teaspoon of honey. To the other, add the 100s and 1000s. Rim the edge of the martini glass first in the honey and then in the 100s and 1000s. Set aside. In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine the vodka, amaretto, white chocolate liqueur and cream. Shake vigorously. Strain into your prepared martini glass.
