Association of Postconsumer Plastic Recyclers (APR)

The Voice of Plastics RecyclingTM

• National trade association representing those companies with over 90% of the postconsumer plastic processing capacity in North America.

The goal of APR is to increase the amount of plastic material recycled in North America.

APR Goals

*Increasing supply of recycled plastics*

*Reducing contamination for plastic recyclers*

• Early 2013 –China’s Green Fence Policy

• MRF operators were scrambling for markets for Prepicked and Bulky Rigid plastic bales

• Show the value of plastic beyond PET and HDPE bottles

Page 10: The Sort for Value Online Calculator - plastics recycling

Domestic plastic reclaimers are interested in purchasing non-bottle rigid plastics material.

Sorting by generator (MRF) may be necessary

to access some domestic markets -

additional sorting may result in additional revenue!

Page 11: The Sort for Value Online Calculator - plastics recycling

*Demonstrate significant value of non-bottle mixed rigid plastics.

*Show generators (MRFs) options on how

best to tap into that value.

Moore Recycling brought the concept to the APR Rigids Committee

*With additional support & funding from APR – it was developed. *This tool is now a joint project between the APR and Moore

Recycling

A graphic showing value of “typical” MRF ton of plastic:

*Sorted 5 different ways 1. No sorting 2. *Commingle bottles *Pre-picked *Bulky rigids 3. *PET bottles *HDPE color/natural *Pre-picked *Bulky rigids 4. *PET *HDPE natural *HDPE color *Tubs & Lids *Bulky rigids *Other/Trash 5. *PET *HDPE color containers *PE Injection *Polypropylene *Other/Trash *At three different points of time

1. Pre-China Green Fence Policy – Jan. 2013 2. Post-China Green Fence Policy – May 2013 3. One year later – May 2014

Now an interactive tool!

*User can explore value of sorting various combinations of plastic bale types

*Option to input own values/costs or use default data

Page 15: The Sort for Value Online Calculator - plastics recycling

How it was developed

• Three development pieces • Sorting scenarios • Rigid plastic bale composition

• 2010/2011 APR Rigid Plastic Bale Audit • Update coming – 2014/2015 APR Rigid Plastic Bale Audit

• Historical pricing • APR plastic reclaimer survey • Combined with Moore’s data

Page 16: The Sort for Value Online Calculator - plastics recycling
Page 17: The Sort for Value Online Calculator - plastics recycling

How to use it • Default pricing

• Market is evolving • Further sorting can lead to less recovery of some plastics

– PS/PVC • Sorting out all the PE and PP in addition to PET can

provide the greatest income

• Input your own pricing • Provides results based on your markets

Page 18: The Sort for Value Online Calculator - plastics recycling

• The APR Rigids Committee and Moore Recycling are excited by the potential of this tool. • Provides MRF operators with solid base of information as they evaluate their options for

sorting rigid plastics. • Good source of options for marketing rigid plastics
