THE SOLEMNITY OF MARY MOTHER OF GOD
(Readings: Numbers 6:22-27 — Galatians 4:4-7 — Luke 2:16-21)
The Blessing We Receive — The blessing we experience in
Christ Jesus is proclaimed in Numbers as the special blessing for
the people of Israel. They and we are to be blessed by the
invocation of God’s loving kindness, the shining glory of God’s face turned toward us
in love, not away from us in anger. We are blessed by God’s own peace! Our wish
and our hope are fulfilled in this blessing, which is made visible in the coming of
Jesus. In Jesus, the image of the invisible God, God’s face is shown to us and God’s
presence is made known to us in faithful and loving kindness.
“Let Your Light Shine”
The encounter between God and Moses in today’s first reading is awe-inspiring. God bestows three blessings upon Moses and directs him to extend those blessings to others: The Lord bless-es you and keeps you. The Lord lets his face shine upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord looks upon you kindly and gives you peace. Good stewards realize these blessings are showered upon them in a unique and special way each me they receive the Eucharist, and exercising good stewardship of the Lord’s blessings in this sacrament begins by receiving these gi s with profound gra tude. Perhaps it would be a good idea this week to memorize these marvelous blessings and repeat them to yourself frequently. Make them part of your morning prayer each day.
