Rainsford held his breath. The general’s eyes had left the ground and were traveling inch by inch up the tree. Rainsford froze there, every muscle tensed for a spring. But the sharp eyes of the hunter stopped before they reached the limb where Rainsford lay a smile spread over his brown face. Very deliberately he blew a smoke ring into the air then he turned his back on the tree and walked carelessly away, back along the trail he had come. (page 33)

Zaroff was just toying with Rainsford because if he wanted to kill him he would in the passage it said that he walked away slowly and he blew a smoke ring at him just to signal that he found him in the tree.

They had come from the right, and doggedly he swam in that direction, swimming with slow, deliberate strokes, conserving his strength. For a seemingly endless time he fought the sea. He began to count his strokes; he could do possibly a hundred more and then— Rainsford heard a sound. It came out of the darkness, a high screaming sound, the sound of an animal in an extremity of anguish and terror.

RAINSFORD WAS CURIOUS A B OUT WHAT WAS OUT THERE AND THE G UN SHOTS REALLY MA DE HIM CURIOUS ON WHO ELSE WAS ON THE ISLAND.
